    Compassionate care, beautiful setting, thriving

I placed my mother at The Redwoods and have been very pleased. The staff are compassionate and attentive, the care exceeded my expectations, and she truly bloomed again after COVID. The bay-side, garden-like setting and airy apartments with patios make visits a joy, and there's a lively schedule of activities, speakers and support groups. Friendly community, smooth continuity from independent living to healthcare, and dependable meals and amenities made this an easy, reassuring choice.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: The Redwoods presents as a well-located, activity-rich retirement community with a strong emphasis on social engagement and scenic outdoor amenities. Many reviewers highlighted the facility's attractive waterfront setting, walking paths, gardens and sizable communal spaces, which contribute to a lively, village-like atmosphere. Common strengths include a large slate of classes and events, frequent outings and guest speakers, and a visible community feeling among residents.

Staff and clinical care: Staff interactions are frequently described as compassionate and attentive; reviewers commonly praised caregiving, hospitality, and volunteers who support activities. At the same time, there are recurring concerns about clinical nursing consistency. A subset of reviews described clinically significant lapses in nursing judgment and medication/fluid management, which suggest variability in clinical competence and decision-making. There are also reports of staff turnover that can undermine continuity of care. Families considering higher-acuity services should ask for specific information on nurse staffing levels, clinical oversight, and handoff procedures.

Dining: Dining receives mixed but generally positive commentary. Many reviewers found the food appealing and the three-meal schedule satisfactory, with attractive presentation noted on tours and events. Other accounts describe meals as uninspiring or note that some pricing structures exclude meals and housekeeping, which can affect perceived value. Prospective residents should clarify what services are included in base fees and taste the menu if possible.

Activities and social life: The Redwoods scores strongly for programming and resident engagement. Reviewers described robust offerings — painting, yoga, exercise classes, lectures, outings, and social groups — and characterized residents as active and socially connected. The presence of long-term residents who remain engaged, plus volunteer-led programming, supports the impression of a sustained, resident-centered social environment.

Facilities and environment: Physical plant strengths include renovated common areas, attractive wood construction in parts of the campus, bay views, private patios/balconies for many units, and well-kept grounds. At the same time, some parts of the facility are described as dated, with accounts of small, dark apartments and variable upkeep in older wings. Apartment sizes vary; select 500 sq ft units and garden-style homes are noted as roomy and airy, while other units feel cramped.

Management and operations: Management impressions are mixed. Several reviews praise straightforward, pleasant staff and effective programming logistics. Other reviews describe inconsistent responsiveness from front-desk or administrative staff, occasional rude interactions, difficulty contacting the facility, and perceptions that corporate priorities can influence local decisions. Operational issues cited include wait-listing or advance registration requirements and questions about fee transparency.

Notable patterns and guidance for families: The dominant pattern is a community-oriented, activity-heavy campus staffed by people who are often described as caring and engaged. However, recurring themes to probe on a tour include clinical oversight and nursing competence (especially for residents with complex medical needs), staff turnover and continuity plans, specifics of what fees cover, and unit-to-unit variability in natural light and size. Ask for nurse staffing ratios, examples of clinical oversight, recent maintenance/renovation schedules, meal plans and sample menus, and references from long-tenured families to get a balanced view aligned with your priorities.

    About The Redwoods

The Redwoods - Retirement, Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing in Mill Valley, CA, has been around for over 50 years, and the place really tries to offer care that fits what older adults need as they age, with all sorts of support for people over 60. There's independent living in the Creekside and Headlands Apartments as well as assisted living in the Meadows, each with options like one-bedroom apartments or studios, full kitchens or kitchenettes, private patios and balconies, and all with housekeeping, linens, air conditioning, cable, and internet. Folks living here find the grounds have nice gardens like the Scott Organic Garden, lots of trees, walking paths, and a quiet setting that makes things feel peaceful, while still having things like a wellness center, a small library, a computer center, and plenty of spots to just sit and talk or join in on activities.

The Redwoods runs several levels of care-independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and continuing care, so people can stay as their needs change. They help with daily things like bathing, dressing, medication, meals, and if someone needs extra help, there's 24-hour nursing, wound care, diabetes management, rehab, physical therapy, respite care, and special care for people living with Alzheimer's or other memory conditions, plus hospice care when needed. Rooms in the health care units come furnished, and you'll find private bathrooms, meal prep areas, and even gardens and patios right outside some rooms. They offer dining options with organic food, special diets, and restaurant-style meals, so everyone's needs and taste buds get considered.

There's a lot to do, whether it's joining movie nights, music programs, art in the arts room, keeping active in the gym or swimming pool, quiet times in the meditation area, or just sitting out on the patio in the sunshine. There's a big focus on staying engaged, with daily activities, social groups like Seniors for Peace, a Life Enrichment program, fitness classes, and even opportunities to garden, volunteer, or run resident-led activities. They welcome pets, so even dogs and cats get to be part of the community.

Transportation for medical and other trips is handled on site, and all kinds of support services can be added for folks who want to stay independent but need a little extra help here and there. The Redwoods, being a nonprofit, has affordable housing options, and the SHARE Fund offers help with rent or special needs.

The Redwoods tries to keep things warm, welcoming, and supportive, putting dignity, respect, and health at the front. The staff delivers care with kindness, and plans are made with each resident's needs in mind, so people get support while keeping as much independence as possible. The atmosphere feels more like a small town, where people look out for each other, and there are plenty of chances to stay active, make friends, and contribute to the life of the community as time goes by.
