    Warm attentive staff, excellent rehab

I had a positive experience here - warm, attentive staff who treat residents like family and really go above and beyond. The on-site rehab beat hospital care for me: personalized therapy, steady progress, and solid wound/infection prevention. Nurses and therapists respond quickly (phones always answered), meals and activities are well organized, and the facility is clean and well-equipped. I'd be comfortable sending a family member here.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Sherman Village Health Care elicits a mix of strong praise and serious operational concerns. Many comments highlight a core of compassionate, relationship-oriented caregivers and an environment that some families describe as home-like and attentive. At the same time, a number of accounts raise safety, sanitation, and management issues that prospective residents and families should evaluate directly.

Care quality and staff: Positive feedback centers on nursing and therapy staff who form genuine relationships with residents, deliver personalized care plans, and facilitate rehabilitation progress. Reviewers specifically praised wound care and infection-prevention efforts when those were effective, as well as responsive clinicians such as respiratory therapists. However, there are credible concerns about inconsistent staff conduct and professionalism; one review includes an allegation of financial misconduct by a named staff member. Other critiques describe communication tone issues and instances when staff responsiveness was limited, suggesting variability across shifts and personnel.

Safety, infection control, and sanitation: Reviews reflect both instances of effective clinical care and notable gaps. Several reviewers expressed concerns about infection-control practices and potential exposure risks during infectious outbreaks. Others cited pest-control and broader sanitation concerns in parts of the facility, and a few described falls and bed-related incidents that point to weaknesses in fall-prevention and transfer-safety protocols. These patterns suggest the facility may benefit from tighter operational controls around infection prevention, environmental maintenance, and resident safety checks.

Dining, activities, and therapy: Positive comments note organized meal and activity schedules, active social engagement opportunities, and rehabilitation services that many families found superior to acute-hospital care. Conversely, some families reported inconsistent activity programming and dissatisfaction with the activities departmentโ€™s management, indicating variability in the resident experience depending on staff assignment and event execution.

Facilities and amenities: Several reviewers praised clean, well-equipped areas and an overall home-like atmosphere without strong medical odors. Others pointed to localized sanitation or maintenance issues, and occasional references to older mattresses and environmental shortcomings suggest uneven facility upkeep. Prospective families should request a tour of resident rooms and common areas and ask specifically about maintenance and pest-control protocols.

Management and communication: Strengths include staff who answer phones and, at times, maintain open lines with families. Weaknesses reported include poor on-hold experiences, limited supervisory availability, and perceptions that admissions or care decisions can be influenced by financial considerations. These items indicate potential gaps in administrative responsiveness, admissions policy transparency, and staff screening or compliance practices.

Recommendation: Sherman Village appears to combine dedicated caregivers and effective therapy services with operational inconsistencies that warrant scrutiny. Families considering placement should verify recent inspection reports, ask about infection-control and pest-management programs, review fall-prevention policies, inquire about staff screening and supervision, and arrange in-person observations across multiple shifts to assess consistency in care and communication.

    About Sherman Village Health Care

Sherman Village Health Care sits in North Hollywood as a for-profit skilled nursing facility with 108 certified beds, usually home to about 99 residents each day, where people find a mix of care, short-term rehab, and therapy, including specialty services for Alzheimer's and dementia support, and it's got an experienced team that covers 24-hour licensed nursing care with a call system for emergencies and help any time, which is helpful if someone needs supervision, medicine management, or daily support like bathing, dressing, or transfers. The staff puts together a range of programs and therapies-there's inpatient rehab with occupational, physical, respiratory, IV, and speech/language therapy, plus special attention for mental health, so you'll see a lot of effort spent on helping folks regain strength or independence after illness, surgery, or injury, and they also try to encourage dignity and individuality, which sure is important at this stage in life. Sherman Village runs with a nurse turnover rate that's actually better than the state average, and its staffing gives nearly five nurse hours per resident each day, so people aren't left waiting too long if they ring the bell or need help, and English-speaking caregivers are the main group here, serving residents who may need non-ambulatory care, help with moving about, and regular medical oversight.

The facility itself offers quite a bit-there are private and semi-private oversized rooms, all with things like private bathrooms, air conditioning, cable TV, phone, kitchenettes, Wi-Fi, and furnished setups, and residents can take part in activities, religious services, movie nights, and fitness programs, stroll down walking paths or through a garden, play in a game room, or use the small library, computer center, or beauty salon. Folks eat in a dining room with meals made by a professional chef, and there are all-day and restaurant-style options, with dietary needs and allergies handled. There's also a wellness center and a spa/wellness room, which sounds nice for those who want to stay as active as they can, and for everyone else, there's always room for rest or company in common areas. For residents just staying short-term, Sherman Village offers respite care; they'll arrange or provide community transportation and non-medical rides, plus community services like laundry, housekeeping, and support for families. The community is close to four area hospitals, so there's quick access to outside care or emergencies, and it's not part of a continuing care retirement community setup, just a skilled nursing home with different levels and options.

The onsite care covers medication management, transfers, there's always a nurse around, and specialty programs try to meet most needs, from basic grooming and transfers to expert monitoring of feeding tubes, though some past inspection reports have shown areas to improve, especially in infection control and proper tube use, with citations for having up to ten deficiencies linked to infection control; as of the last inspections, there'd been 91 deficiencies overall, which people might want to look into, but at least the most recent problems hadn't caused actual harm, just what regulators call "potential for more than minimal harm." Sherman Village accepts Medicare and Medicaid, which helps cover costs for many, and is owned by Longwood Management Corporation, running as a licensed Limited Liability Company. Staff here, who are mentioned as being friendly and helpful, aim to create a place where care and safety matter, and the full interdisciplinary team puts together personal treatment plans so each resident gets what they need, whether it's short-term rehab or long-term skilled nursing. The community does its best to provide comfort-from Wi-Fi to all-day dining to spiritual support and social activities-while staying focused on residents' health, dignity, and independence every day.
