    Homey facility inadequate medical care

I felt very comfortable in this well-run, home-like place with lovely, friendly staff, beautiful grounds, animals and a dog run, and plenty of activities (bingo, reading club, music, non-denominational Sunday service). The food was tasty-big breakfasts and lunches, light dinners (I loved the potato soup and cornbread)-private rooms and reasonable pricing were available, and medication administration staff were reliable. However, overall medical care was inadequate for my needs and I ultimately had to relocate, so verify the facility's medical-care capabilities before moving in; note admission requires residents to be walking. Staff were accommodating and engaging otherwise.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Oakhurst Board & Care–Elderly is strongly positive, with multiple reviewers praising the staff, the home-like environment, the food, and the range of activities. Staff are repeatedly described as wonderful, accommodating, friendly, and engaging. Several comments emphasize that residents and family members felt comfortable and well-cared-for, and reviewers singled out reliable medication administration as a strength. The facility is consistently characterized as a private, well-run home rather than an institutional setting, which many reviewers appreciated.

Dining and daily life are frequent highlights. Multiple reviewers noted that the food is tasty, with big breakfasts and lunches and lighter dinners; there are specific mentions of appealing home-cooked smells such as fresh potato soup and cornbread. Reviewers also stated there were no complaints about the food. Activities appear varied and active, with Bingo, reading clubs, music, and services such as non-denominational Sunday gatherings. The facility offers accommodations for visually impaired residents (books on tape) and provides a social environment that reviewers found engaging.

The physical setting and amenities receive positive comments: reviewers call the grounds beautiful, describe animals on site and a dog run, and refer to the atmosphere as cute and nice. The availability of private rooms and the overall reasonable pricing are noted benefits that make the facility attractive to prospective residents and families seeking a homelike assisted living option.

Despite the generally favorable comments, there are important caveats and at least one significant negative report. One reviewer explicitly reported inadequate medical care and said their loved one needed to be relocated; this reviewer advised others to verify the facility’s care capabilities. This concern suggests that while day-to-day care, medication administration, and personal attention are strengths, the facility’s capacity to handle higher-acuity or rapidly changing medical needs may be limited. This aligns with the facility’s private-home model and an admission policy that requires residents to be walking — both indicators that Oakhurst is geared toward lower-dependency residents.

Practical implications for families: Oakhurst appears to offer a warm, well-staffed, and reasonably priced environment with good food and a range of social activities that many residents enjoy. However, prospective residents with progressive or complex medical needs should be cautious. Verify in advance whether the facility can meet any current or foreseeable medical requirements, what triggers a requirement to relocate, and what emergency or nursing supports are available. Also confirm the implications of the walking/admissions policy for your family member. For those whose needs match the facility’s scope—primarily ambulatory seniors seeking a homelike environment—Oakhurst seems to be a strong option. For residents likely to require frequent medical interventions or higher-level skilled nursing, further investigation and clarification are strongly recommended.

    About Oakhurst Board & Care-Elderly

Oakhurst Board & Care-Elderly sits in Oakhurst, California, and operates as a residential care home for the elderly with a strong focus on comfort and personal support, running from 9 AM to 6 PM most days except Sunday, so residents stay well cared for throughout the week. Here you'll find both independent living and assisted living, so folks who need some help with daily activities like taking medications or getting dressed but still want some independence can get just the right amount of support. They're set up to handle high-acuity care, incontinence care, diabetic needs, and medication management, and have staff on site at all hours, which can offer peace of mind since you know help is always available, and there's medical support like hearing care, podiatry, dental, and nursing right on the property. Meals are made with special diets in mind, so there's kosher, vegetarian, low-sodium, low- or no-sugar, and they can even serve guest meals, and you'll see residents and visitors enjoying meals in a common dining area or out in the garden when the weather's right.

Rooms come with simple comforts, like cable TV, some have kitchenettes, tubs for bathing, and they keep things air conditioned, meanwhile the property itself has a TV lounge, fireplaces in common rooms for a cozy atmosphere, an outdoor patio, gardens, raised beds for any residents who like to garden, an atrium, a piano or organ for music lovers, and a library where people can sit down with a book. Pets like cats and dogs are allowed, which many residents appreciate for companionship. Housekeeping, grocery shopping, on-site beautician services, and grocery delivery keep daily life running smoothly, and there's resident parking and complimentary transportation for folks needing rides to appointments or shopping. Social activities, religious programs, and educational events are available, including services for different faiths right on site, so people can continue their spiritual routines if that's important to them. The staff aim to be friendly and well-trained, and because the community is small, close relationships can form among residents and caregivers, making it feel more homelike than institutional. There's a special focus on residents' social, physical, and spiritual needs, with activities scheduled to keep everybody engaged. Safety and handicap features are built in, including options for those with non-ambulatory needs, so residents move about as safely as possible. Short-term stays and respite care are possible too, for those who just need a place for a little while, and there's plenty of parking, including uncovered spots for residents who still drive. Oakhurst Board & Care-Elderly fits people looking for a laid-back, friendly setting, where care is respectful and each person can enjoy both privacy and community, all within a California regulatory framework for elder care.
