    Family-like staff personalized secure care

I placed my mom at Con Carino and couldn't be more pleased - the staff are incredibly kind, experienced, and truly feel like family, with virtually no turnover. The renovated Craftsman offers private rooms, communal dining, peaceful grounds and strong security, and the owner gives expert, advocacy-driven care. It's a small, personalized community (six in front, four in back) with great food; there's a waitlist and it's on the pricier side, but for us it's money well spent and getting a spot felt like winning the lottery.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviews present a facility with many strengths in interpersonal care and a homelike environment, alongside notable operational and regulatory concerns that warrant due diligence. Families consistently highlight warm, attentive caregiving and a small household model that supports personalized attention; at the same time, mentions of health‑safety citations and documentation gaps suggest areas to verify before making placement decisions.

Care and staff: The most consistent praise centers on caregiving quality. Reviewers describe staff as compassionate, family-like, and experienced, with low turnover and continuity that many families found reassuring. The owner is frequently described as clinically knowledgeable and an advocate for residents; several accounts emphasize direct clinical guidance and a closer supervisory eye on individual residents. While interpersonal care is a prominent strength, some comments indicate concerns about transparency and communication channels between management and families that should be clarified during a tour.

Dining and activities: The facility is described as providing home-style communal dining, with multiple reviewers noting that residents enjoyed the food. The small size supports shared meals and social interaction; however, specific descriptions of recreational programming are limited in the summaries provided. Prospective families should ask about the regular activity calendar and how individualized social engagement is supported.

Facilities and setting: Con Carino occupies a renovated Craftsman home with private rooms and a small footprint (roughly ten residents split across two areas), which reviewers appreciated for its residential feel and personalized environment. Grounds are characterized as peaceful and well maintained, contributing to a secure, community-oriented atmosphere. The small scale appears to be a deliberate operational choice that supports individualized routines and dining together.

Management and regulatory patterns: A notable pattern in the summaries is the presence of health‑safety citations and references to multiple violations; this raises questions about regulatory compliance and corrective actions. There are also references to unclear or inconsistent documentation practices (for example, difficulty identifying residents in records) and an allegation of owner misrepresentation in at least one account. Additionally, capacity limits create a competitive waitlist and some mention extra costs tied to placement. These items point to three practical checks for prospective families: review the facility’s recent inspection reports, ask for written clarification of fees and waitlist policies, and request current documentation of staffing, resident records, and corrective-action plans.

Bottom line and recommended next steps: Con Carino appears to offer a strong, family-oriented caregiving experience in a small, homelike setting with stable staff and enjoyable meals. Those positives are tempered by operational concerns around regulatory compliance, documentation, and transparency. Before deciding, families should tour the home, review the latest regulatory inspection and corrective-action history, obtain a clear written contract outlining fees and waitlist expectations, and ask for references from current families. Doing so will help weigh the evident strengths in daily care against the administrative and compliance issues noted in the summaries.

    About Con Carino

Con Carino sits in Pasadena, California, as a small, quiet residential care home with a license as a Residential Care Facility for the Elderly, license number #197604439, and it keeps things homelike with only six residents at a time, so there's always a close-knit feeling and staff have time to help each person properly, and people usually notice the grounds are peaceful, with covered patios and garden spaces, and residents can stroll along the paths, join in social nights, or enjoy movie events with neighbors. The community offers private, furnished bedrooms, cable TV, phones, WiFi, laundry machines on site, housekeeping, and scheduled dry cleaning. Meals are all homemade and tailored to fit dietary needs like high blood pressure or diabetes, and there's always support with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting, plus a caring team serving three meals a day in a shared dining room. Residents have help managing medications and get regular check-ins from personal care assistants, so families know their loved ones are looked after kindly and carefully, and the place keeps things as safe as possible with sprinkler systems, emergency alert buttons, and handy grab bars.

People living at Con Carino get plenty of choices for activities, with programs like music therapy, pet therapy, arts and crafts, exercise sessions, board games, book rooms, and planned trips outside for shopping, doctor appointments, or spiritual visits. Some join memory care groups in studio-style rooms to support those with dementia or other memory changes, and the staff work alongside residents, trying to make everything feel calm and familiar. There's a beauty salon and barbershop on the grounds, with mobile stylists coming in for trims and grooming, and folks often visit the fitness center, steam or hot tub room, and the shared game and activity rooms when they want something to do.

Con Carino provides long-term care and also offers respite stays for families needing short-term support, hospice care at the end of life, and options for those wanting to stay independent but just need some daily help. Ancillary health services are available too, including diabetic care and non-ambulatory care. Laundry and household chores are handled, and there's transportation for appointments or errands. The staff try to make everyone feel included, with regular events and activities, keeping each day ordered but never rushed, and people often comment on how loving and attentive the environment here can be, with a feeling of family and belonging that's hard to find in bigger communities. The facility is known for competent, steady staff and kind management, with support for emotional, social, physical, and spiritual well-being, and they work hard to keep an atmosphere of real care and safety for each resident.
