    Kind staff, excellent rehab, recommended

I had a very positive experience here - the staff were consistently kind, patient, and professional, and the DON/RN and caregivers went above and beyond. Rehab and physical therapy were excellent (well-stocked gym and steady progress), and activities led by Maria and team - weekly movie night, patio/garden, library - really engaged my aunt. The facility felt clean, organized, and safe; we're grateful and would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews of Berkley West Healthcare Center describe a facility with distinct strengths alongside notable operational inconsistencies. Many families praised the day-to-day caregiving and rehabilitation teams: nursing and caregiver staff are frequently described as compassionate and attentive, and the physical-therapy program — supported by a well-equipped therapy room — produced steady progress for some residents. Several reviewers highlighted specific activities staff who engage residents, weekly movie nights, dementia- and mobility-focused programming, and pleasant outdoor and communal spaces such as a garden, patio, library, and entertainment room.

At the same time, a consistent pattern of variability emerges when it comes to clinical operations and management. Multiple comments point to high staff turnover and uneven staffing levels, which appear linked to inconsistent adherence to basic clinical and infection-control protocols. Reviewers raised concerns about delayed responses to call lights and requests for assistance, gaps in on-site physician coverage and clinical oversight, and weaknesses in transfer and fall-prevention practices. There are also recurring mentions of gaps in skin/wound care and nutrition monitoring. Some families felt compelled to hire private nursing coverage at night or to move residents out when care needs were not met.

Dining and amenities receive mixed feedback. The facility offers room delivery for meals and on-site services such as a weekly hairdresser and organized activities; these aspects were appreciated by many. However, meal quality and presentation were described inconsistently — some reviewers praised the food while others found it mediocre. The physical environment is often described as clean and organized, which many families found reassuring.

Management and front-line operations appear uneven. Positive interactions with specific administrative and social-work staff were noted, yet other reviewers described long waits at reception, limited visitor screening or front-desk presence, and strained family communication in some cases. These mixed impressions suggest variability in staff conduct and in leadership follow-through.

Overall, experiences at Berkley West range from very positive rehabilitation and supportive caregiving to serious concerns about operational reliability and safety practices. Prospective residents and families should verify current staffing levels, on-site clinical coverage, call-response procedures, infection-control policies, transfer and fall-prevention protocols, and wound/nutrition-monitoring processes during tours and prior to admission to ensure the facility’s current practices match their expectations and care needs.

    About Berkley West Healthcare Center

Berkley West Healthcare Center sits in Santa Monica, California, and has served seniors for years as a long-standing healthcare and rehabilitation facility, and while folks usually notice the nurturing and comfortable environment they keep for the residents, the place mainly focuses on skilled nursing, rehabilitation therapies like physical and occupational therapy, and memory care for people with Alzheimer's and dementia, and they run this as a 24-hour nursing home where people come to recover and regain independence, since their team of dedicated professionals-like the RN/Director of Staff Development/IP Nurse and a physical therapist assistant-work hard to meet each resident's medical and emotional needs. The center handles 54 certified beds and averages about 47 residents a day, with staff giving about 3.97 nurse hours per resident per day, and yes, the nurse turnover rate is 51% which is something to consider if consistency in caregivers is important. Ownership falls under Aspen Skilled Healthcare Inc., and private owners Vern Brady, Ryan Case, and Jeffrey Bradshaw hold most of the indirect ownership.

Berkley West delivers a wide range of care, from skilled nursing for long-term care to specialty services like palliative care, hospice care, respite care, and help for folks recovering from conditions like encephalitis. For those needing rehabilitation, they've got a good setup for physical, occupational, and speech therapy in a setting described as safe and therapeutic. Staff are known for being caring and responsive, and events like Halloween parties and door decorating contests show life isn't all clinical-there's time for fun, too, and the courtyard and communal spaces help folks feel more at home. The place is for-profit and operates as a Limited Liability Company, has around 51-200 employees, and has a reputation for compassionate senior care, though people should know that inspection reports have listed a total of 91 deficiencies, including issues with pharmacy services, infection control-there were 7 infection-related deficiencies-as well as problems planning resident discharge and general care planning, with $155,455 in fines reported for one inspection and another complaint about discharge planning later on, so those facts are part of the record. Berkley West's main goal is to help residents recover, grow, and thrive in a safe and comfortable place, offering individual attention for both medical and emotional needs, and the onsite gallery of photographs shows residents taking part in activities and enjoying daily life. The center is licensed by the Health and Human Services Agency, but it's not a BBB Accredited Business, so families sometimes weigh that along with the care services and inspection history when making decisions.
