    Attentive staff, comfortable room, inconsistent

I'm very grateful for the caring, professional staff-Cortney is amazing and keeps me updated-who make my loved one comfortable and safe (there are sensible wandering restrictions). The place is mid-remodel and already cleaner and more attractive; the room is tidy and private with its own bathroom, wall-mounted TV, dresser, two chairs and closet, and rehab progress has been good. Negatives: food is mediocre, rooms can feel cramped, and housekeeping/turnover are occasionally inconsistent. Overall I feel blessed by the attentive staff, devotional activities, and FaceTime access.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is cautiously positive, with frequent and emphatic praise for the staff and improvements to the facility tempered by some recurring operational concerns. Multiple reviewers highlight the compassion, attentiveness, and professionalism of caregivers; staff communication — including regular updates to families — is repeatedly mentioned as a strength. One staff member (Cortney) is specifically named and praised, indicating that individual employees are making a strong, favorable impression on families and residents. The tone indicates gratitude and relief from several families who felt their loved ones were treated with dignity and care.

Care quality and staff: The most consistent positive theme is staff performance. Reviewers describe staff as helpful, attentive, and caring, and many comment that they keep families informed about progress and day-to-day issues. Rehabilitation services receive positive notes as well — reviewers mention measurable rehab progress and that a second rehabilitation stay was better than a first, suggesting improvement or learning over time. Devotional activities and opportunities such as songs of praise are cited, implying attention to residents' spiritual or emotional needs. The facility also appears to prioritize safety for residents who wander, which is viewed as a protective measure by reviewers.

Facilities and cleanliness: Multiple reviews state rooms are clean and attractive, and the facility is undergoing remodeling that reviewers see as a positive development. Room amenities are noted specifically: private bathrooms, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, dressers, chairs, and closets. These concrete details suggest rooms are reasonably furnished and provide privacy. At the same time, some reviewers describe rooms as cramped, indicating variability in room size or that certain room types may feel small. Renovation work is a double-edged theme — it is improving appearance and infrastructure, but it is also in progress, which can mean temporary disruption or uneven conditions across the building depending on the phase of work.

Dining, housekeeping, and operations: Opinions on dining and housekeeping are mixed. Several reviewers say they “love the food,” but others call the food mediocre or inconsistent, pointing to variability in meal quality or personal taste differences. Housekeeping is generally seen as acceptable by some reviewers, with overall cleanliness noted, yet there are explicit comments about inconsistent housekeeping standards. These mixed reports suggest operational variability — some shifts or teams provide excellent service, while others fall short. Management practices earn praise when they display professionalism and communication, but staff turnover is cited as a concern that can undermine consistency of care and service.

Patterns and notable concerns: Two recurring negatives stand out: staffing instability and inconsistent service levels. Staff turnover is mentioned explicitly and likely contributes to variability in food, housekeeping, and overall resident experience. The fact that one reviewer said a second rehab stay was better than the first highlights inconsistent outcomes across time or units. Emotional concern also figures in the reviews — family members express anxiety and pleas for protection and well-being of residents, which reflects the high emotional stakes families feel and a desire for reassurance that the facility consistently provides safe, compassionate care.

Conclusion and implications: In summary, Calhoun Nursing Home appears to provide generally compassionate, communicative, and effective care, particularly in rehabilitation and individualized staff attention. The facility is clean and is actively improving through renovations; rooms are furnished and include private baths and amenities that many families appreciate. However, operational inconsistencies — notably staff turnover, variable food and housekeeping quality, and occasional cramped rooms — are real concerns that could affect some residents' experiences. Prospective families should weigh the evident strengths in staff quality and rehabilitation outcomes against the variability reported, ask specific questions about room sizes and renovation timing, and inquire about current staffing stability and kitchen/housekeeping procedures when making placement decisions.
