    Clean, caring community with activities

I visit my aunt regularly and I'm very impressed - clean, top-of-the-line facility with kind, professional staff who go above and beyond. Residents are comfortable and engaged with lots of activities (pool, movies, bingo, outings), spacious one- and two-bedroom units with lovely views, good dining choices, and convenient location. The ohana/aloha spirit and supportive care promote independence and dignity; I highly recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

Regency at Puakea is described across reviews as a well-maintained, amenity-rich community with strengths in staffing, unit size, and programming. Reviewers consistently highlight a friendly, accommodating care staff, a home-like 'ohana' culture, and a range of living options (Independent Living and Memory Care) supported by medication assistance. The physical campus and apartments receive frequent praise for cleanliness, spacious layouts, lanais with views, and attractive grounds. On-site amenities such as a pool, Jacuzzi, dining rooms with views, and proximity to beach access and local shopping add to the community appeal.

Dining and activities are prominent positives: many reviewers note a wide variety of meal choices, an open salad bar, and regular social programming including weekly tours, shopping trips, movies, bingo, and local music. Transportation to medical appointments and good local transit access are cited as practical conveniences that support resident independence. Overall the community atmosphere is characterized as relaxed, engaging, and family-oriented, with staff described as professional, supportive, and often going above and beyond to assist residents and families during move-in and assessments.

Notable patterns of concern center on operational and communication issues rather than the physical plant. Several reviewers conveyed inconsistent clinical-care experiences, and a minority expressed broader concerns about care quality and oversight; this suggests variability in care delivery or responsiveness at times. Dining quality is described variably — from ‘‘great variety’’ to ‘‘just okay’’ — indicating inconsistency in meal execution or subjective differences in expectation.

Communication and management are an area to probe during a tour. Reviewers pointed to gaps in family communication during infection-control/visitation restrictions and a perception that management priorities can be occupancy-focused, which has affected trust for some families. These themes suggest prospective residents and families should ask targeted questions about clinical staffing patterns, family communication protocols during health events, dining samples and menus, and recent changes in leadership or occupancy policies. In sum, Regency at Puakea presents strong amenities, a supportive staff culture, and active programming, but prospective residents should evaluate clinical consistency and communication practices to ensure they match their expectations and care needs.

    About Regency at Puakea

Regency at Puakea sits on Kaneka Street in Lihue, HI, offering a quiet setting with pretty gardens, hills, and distant mountain views, and the place has 82 apartments that come in studio or one-bedroom layouts, with some units having private balconies and all of them made to feel cozy and comfortable, so people can feel at home but still enjoy the support they need. The community serves three good meals a day with snack options, and the dining area has nice views of the landscaped yard, and there's always an open menu, and folks can get room service if they want, plus there are vegetarian, diabetic, gluten-free, and vegan meal choices for special diets. Regency at Puakea offers several levels of care-independent living for active seniors, assisted living for people who want help with things like bathing or dressing and don't want to worry about chores, and a secured memory care area for residents with Alzheimer's or dementia, and the staff have training for caring for people with memory loss, using a program called Regency Moments that helps with memory needs. There's always someone on duty for help, with registered nurses overseeing health programs and staff ready for emergencies, and a computerized wandering alert system and bracelets help keep residents who might wander safe. The property offers outdoor patios, a swimming pool, hot tub, a game room, a reading room with a lot of books, and places inside and outside for people to get together, sit, or do an activity, whether it's a bingo game, group shopping trip, crafts, walks, live music, or movies, and there's a full-time Activities Director putting out a new monthly calendar so everyone knows what's going on. Exercise and wellness classes include yoga, Tai Chi, water aerobics, Sittercise, group walks, and stretching, with RN supervision, and residents can join clubs, go to educational lectures, join wine tastings or offsite trips, and there are devotional services both in the community and offsite for those who want them. For transportation, the community drives residents at no extra cost anywhere from doctor's offices to group outings to chores around town, and there's resident parking if someone can still drive. Regency at Puakea helps manage health, doing insulin shots, blood sugar testing for diabetics, help with medications, and support for people managing bowel or bladder incontinence, if folks can remind themselves or get help using the bathroom, and staff are trained to use lifts and do two-person transfers. The memory care section is secured with its own building and staff, and anyone who needs a short-term stay for rehab or respite care can get that too, plus the staff keep up with maintenance, trash removal, and housekeeping each week. The community welcomes pets like cats and dogs, so if residents want to bring a pet, they can, and there's usually plenty of towels for the pool. Legal protections and non-discrimination policies are in place, including for LGBTQ residents, and they treat everyone kindly. Regency at Puakea stays focused on making day-to-day life easier for seniors, with a simple approach, friendly staff, and a steady routine of meals, assistance, and regular activities.
