    Clean, friendly, affordable river-view apartments

I live here and have been very pleased - the facility is consistently clean and well-maintained, and the managers and staff are friendly and helpful. My apartment is spacious with lots of storage and nice-sized bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, plus a great view of the river lights. It's affordable, secure (locked building) with on-site laundry, regular activities like bingo, karaoke and occasional potlucks, and neighbors who look out for one another - excellent value.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviewers present a polarized view of Mel Hasty Retirement Center. Many point to well-maintained apartments, on-site services, and a friendly frontline team, while others raise operational and management concerns that prospective residents and families should weigh carefully.

Care and staff: Staff-level impressions are generally positive at the point of daily contact—residents and families describe helpful, friendly employees and supportive neighbors who assist one another. However, there are consistent concerns about management conduct and communication style. Several accounts describe management decisions and interactions that feel authoritarian or unevenly applied, which creates tension between frontline staff performance and administrative leadership.

Dining and daily living supports: The facility does not provide an on-site dining program; residents are expected to manage their own meals. Basic conveniences such as on-site laundry and secure building access are available. Reviewers also note a reliance on resident-led fundraising or donations to cover certain supplies, which may indicate limitations in operational provisioning that families should clarify with management.

Activities and social life: Social programming exists—bingo, karaoke, occasional potlucks and game tables are cited—but activity offerings appear limited and were reduced for many residents after COVID. Prospective residents who prioritize an active, regularly scheduled program should confirm current activity calendars and whether previously offered events have resumed.

Facilities and maintenance: Many reviewers praise the apartments for being spacious, well laid out, and clean, with good storage and pleasant views. At the same time, there are reported inconsistencies in maintenance and pest-control follow-up; some reviewers describe sanitation and pest-control concerns that management needs to address systematically. The property has security features and an outdoor smoking area, but the location of the smoking area adjacent to the main entrance was noted as a drawback by some.

Management and policies: Policies at the facility are described as strict by multiple reviewers—examples include surveillance/camera presence, restrictions on personalizing walls, deposit requirements for use of certain common areas, and specific pet-location rules. Some residents view these measures as overly restrictive. There are also observations that management places strong emphasis on appearance and building order, sometimes perceived as taking priority over resident-centered care. Families should discuss policy specifics, fees, and personalization rules during tours and seek clarity on complaint-resolution processes.

Notable patterns and recommendations: The dominant patterns are a split between solid day-to-day staff interactions and underlying administrative issues. Strengths include apartment quality, helpful staff, affordability, and basic on-site services. Weaknesses center on management style, policy restrictiveness, gaps in sanitation/pest control follow-through, and limited meal and activity services. Prospective residents should verify current pest-control practices, inquire about how supply shortfalls are handled, review the activities schedule, and ask to speak with both residents and different staff levels to get a comprehensive sense of daily life and management responsiveness.
