    Compassionate staff, clean, active community

I'm very pleased with this newly renovated community - the staff are compassionate, experienced and genuinely go above and beyond to make residents feel at home. My father settled quickly: clean, large apartments, in-house therapy, plentiful daily activities and social events helped him make friends and stay engaged. Communication and family support were excellent, giving us real peace of mind. I'd recommend a tour.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: The Courtyard at McHenry presents as a community with many strengths in day-to-day resident life: families consistently praise caring, professional staff; an active social calendar; educational programming; and comfortable, apartment-style residences with bright windows and pleasant common areas. Many reviewers highlighted effective move-in support, visible leadership in marketing and outreach, on-site clinical services (PT/OT), and amenities such as a fitness center, salon, indoor parking and garden space that support resident independence and quality of life.

Care and staff: A dominant theme is strong, compassionate caregiving and approachable nursing and administrative personnel. Reviewers describe staff who learn resident names, provide personalized attention, and support families through transitions and end-of-life care. At the same time, several accounts point to operational strain: high turnover, routine understaffing, and use of agency personnel can produce inconsistent staffing patterns and variable training levels. Families should clarify current staffing ratios, turnover trends, and contingency staffing plans during a tour.

Dining and activities: The activity program is a clear asset — bingo, exercise, outings, church trips, educational seminars (including dementia-focused presentations) and frequent social events contribute to a lively atmosphere and resident engagement. Dining feedback is mixed: many praise generous portions and social dining, while others describe fluctuating food quality and limited diabetic/vegetarian/vegetable-focused options. Prospective residents should sample meals and ask about current menus and accommodations for specific dietary needs.

Clinical operations and safety: The community offers memory-care capability and secure units, and reviewers note comfort with medical follow-up and in-house therapy. However, some reviews point to concerning operational gaps around medication handling and incident escalation; these translate to a facility-level need to confirm medication-storage protocols, clinical-incident procedures, and hospital-readmission policies. In addition, families concerned about advanced dementia behaviors should discuss behavioral-care approaches and unit readiness for complex needs.

Management, billing, and maintenance: Positive comments about welcoming sales and marketing staff and frequent décor updates contrast with reports of uneven leadership performance and occasional communication breakdowns. There are also multiple mentions of billing disputes and contract/fee inconsistencies; these suggest the importance of reviewing the contract terms, deposit/refund policies, and billing practices in writing. Finally, while much of the building and grounds are described as clean and attractive, a subset of comments raised maintenance and appearance issues (for example older carpeting or overgrown exterior areas) — inspect high-traffic areas and recent renovation status during a visit.

Bottom line: The Courtyard at McHenry offers many of the elements families seek — engaged staff, strong activities, on-site therapies, and comfortable apartments — and many residents report improved wellbeing and satisfaction. At the same time, recurring operational themes (staffing stability, medication controls, dining consistency, billing clarity, and dementia-care capacity) warrant specific, documented discussion during tours and decision-making. Asking for current staffing data, sample menus, medication-safety protocols, and a clear written contract will help families weigh the community’s strengths against the operational risks noted by reviewers.

    About The Courtyard at McHenry

The Courtyard at McHenry sits on 13 wooded acres and holds about 70 residents in a three-story building, right near a quaint downtown district that gives a small-town feel. The community offers independent living, assisted living, and memory care, so residents can stay even if their needs change, because the studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments come with a special floating license that lets residents get different care services as needed, which they call aging in place. The building's units are pet friendly, and you'll see residents bringing their dogs along on walks around the landscaped grounds or even out by the outdoor pool when the weather's nice. Safety features are in place, such as a 24-hour security system, fire suppression systems, and safety check procedures, though there is a fire safety code issue being addressed right now, and management is working with the local fire protection district to fix sprinkler repairs, which has caused a temporary pause in new admissions for safety reasons.

Residents can choose from private apartments and receive help with bathing, dressing, medication, and housekeeping. Licensed nurses and visiting doctors are available, along with podiatry, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, homecare, and on-call doctors, offering health support as needed. The community has full-time nurses and offers 24/7 support and emergency call response in every apartment. There's also weekly housekeeping, laundry, valet service, resident parking, and complimentary transportation to appointments.

Meals are served daily with options for different dietary needs, and you'll also find beauty and barber services, non-smoking indoor areas, indoor and outdoor common spaces, a library, a movie theater, a fitness center, and an office center with computer and internet access. Social and recreational activities fill a daily calendar, including exercise, games, gardening, and devotional services both onsite and offsite. Memory care is available for those with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, managed by trained staff and tailored plans, all within secured areas to support safety and comfort.

The Courtyard at McHenry provides various types of care under one roof, whether someone wants maintenance-free, active independent living, tailored assisted care, short-term respite, or full memory support. Residents can enjoy living with their pets, outings to local shops, and spending time with friends in common spaces. The environment here stays focused on helping everyone maintain independence and stay connected with others, with comfortable suites, landscaped grounds, and support services aimed at making daily life easier as needs change over time. Repairs on the fire sprinkler system are ongoing, which means occupancy is temporarily paused, but once complete, residents can expect to return to normal routines with safety measures restored.
