    Loving, attentive staff and community

I moved my mom here and have been very pleased with the loving, attentive staff-especially Activities Director Diana K. The community feels like family and the faith-based atmosphere is comforting; the care and genuine affection for residents is obvious. I'd recommend this place.

    Summary of reviews

Care quality: Reviews convey a mixed picture. Many accounts emphasize that direct-care staff demonstrate compassion and personal attention, and that residents receive affectionate caregiving. At the same time, systemic issues โ€” most notably ongoing staffing shortfalls and interruptions tied to management change โ€” appear to degrade consistency of care and may affect responsiveness during busy periods.

Staff: Front-line employees are widely described as warm and caring; several reviewers highlighted individual staff members positively. However, staffing levels and recent job losses were raised as concerns. These operational constraints are associated with delays in routine care tasks and uneven service delivery, which can erode family confidence even when individual caregivers are praised.

Dining: Review data did not include extensive detail about meals or menu variety. Given reported staffing and continuity challenges, prospective families should verify current meal-service practices and staffing plans during a tour or intake conversation, as these factors can influence meal timing, assistance at mealtime, and food-service reliability.

Activities: Activity programming receives positive mention, including praise for the activities director and the presence of faith-based offerings that contribute to a family-like environment. Organized social and spiritual activities appear to be a relative strength and a source of satisfaction for residents and families.

Facilities: The building is described as older and in need of maintenance in places. Cleanliness and sanitation inconsistencies were noted for both common areas and resident spaces; these are presented as operational issues rather than isolated incidents. Prospective residents should inspect rooms and common areas and ask about recent housekeeping and maintenance schedules.

Management and communication: Several reviewers pointed to administrative turnover and changes in leadership, which have coincided with communication gaps between the facility and families. These factors are linked to uncertainty about care plans and a perception of reduced operational stability. Clearer family communication protocols and demonstrated staff retention or reinvestment would address many of the concerns raised.

Notable patterns: The reviews collectively depict a facility with a strong culture of individual caregiver compassion and meaningful activities, especially faith-based programming, but with systemic operational weaknesses. Chronic staffing shortages, administrative instability, cleanliness inconsistencies, and challenges supporting residents with cognitive or transitional needs are the recurring themes. For families considering this community, a focused tour that assesses staffing levels, recent management changes, housekeeping practices, and how the facility handles transitions and cognitive-care needs will be important to determine current suitability.

About New Athens for the Aged

New Athens Home For The Aged sits on about an acre on 203 S Johnson St in New Athens, Illinois, right on half a city block with roads on three sides and an alley out back, and the main building's all one story made of brick and block, nearly 18,000 square feet, originally built in the 1960s but had some big additions and renovations done since then, plus there are two outbuildings, a pole-framed two-car garage and a boiler room for the hot water heat system, so there's lots of rooms and spaces, including activity rooms, a kitchen, several shower rooms, and extra utility areas from when it was a 53-bed nursing and retirement home, and you'll find two basements where the laundry and more utilities are tucked away. Folks think about all kinds of ways to use the building now, maybe apartments, offices, climate-controlled storage, or condos, since the space is flexible, though it gets sold 'AS IS, WHERE IS', meaning no warranties or promises of any kind, and there's a 10% buyer's premium, and closing needs to happen in 30 days, but the agreement depends on the title being clear and insurable, and zoning being all right for whatever comes next. The place is a non-profit, church-related facility within a Continuing Care Retirement Community, so it has different levels of care for seniors as their needs change, including skilled nursing, assisted living, and memory care for folks with Alzheimer's or dementia, with nursing staff there 12 to 16 hours every day and a 24-hour call system always on in case anyone needs help fast. Housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and parking services are all there, sometimes part of the rent or for an extra fee, and there's a professional chef making meals every day, with allergy and special diet options, usually one or two prepared meals, served restaurant-style. There are private rooms, kitchenettes, cable TV, Wi-Fi, phones, air conditioning, and rooms can come furnished, along with an emergency alert system and move-in help if needed. The community has its own library, fitness and arts rooms, a spa, movie theater, garden paths, a game room, and several outdoor spots, with organized daily activities, movie nights, and music or arts programs, and family can get support services too. Local healthcare providers, including nurse practitioners and a nearby hospital, make sure medical support is never far away, and the staff help out with medication, bathing, dressing, transfers, and daily life tasks, with care for folks who can't walk well. Seniors usually need to be 55 or 62 and up, with options for those who want to live independently but still have care and supervision close by when needed, and specialized services can be brought in upon request. Memory care costs more than standard health care, as expected, especially for people over 65, but Medicaid and Medicare are accepted. Some places like this focus on skilled nursing and rehab, supporting both health and quality of life activities for residents who want a safe, welcoming place to live and age.
