    Clean safe active family-oriented community

I placed my mom at McKay Manor and am very pleased - the facility is clean, safe and home-like, apartments are spacious, and the packed activities calendar and outings keep her busy and social. The staff (Bryan Davis, Kristi, Jessica, Abby and many others) are warm, responsive and treat residents like family; dining by Chef Coop is consistently good and therapy/support services give us peace of mind. Overall a welcoming, well-managed community I'd recommend.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: McKay Manor is frequently described as a welcoming independent living community with a strong emphasis on social engagement, supportive staff-resident relationships, and well-maintained facilities. Many families and residents highlight substantive quality-of-life improvements after moving in — increased social activity, new friendships, and a range of on-site services that support independence. The facility’s apartments, common areas, and grounds are commonly characterized as attractive, spacious, and home-like.

Care and staff: Reviewers consistently praise caregiving and administrative teams as compassionate, attentive, and accessible. Staff are frequently described as treating residents like family, assisting with transitions, and helping plan for future care needs. There are numerous references to responsive leadership and helpful sales and executive directors. However, reviews also indicate variability: some families noted instances of rudeness or slow responsiveness, and there are isolated but serious allegations of theft by staff. These comments suggest that while interpersonal care is a notable strength, families should confirm current staffing practices, incident-reporting procedures, and safeguards for residents’ belongings.

Dining and nutrition: Dining at McKay Manor is often singled out positively. Several reviewers praise the chef and menu creativity, nutritional planning, presentation, and specific features such as a baked-potato station, taco bar, and fresh seafood. At the same time, other comments describe inconsistent food quality and occasions when hot meals were not available. This pattern points to generally strong culinary resources but occasional lapses in consistency or service continuity; prospective residents may want to sample meals and ask about meal-service reliability and contingency plans.

Activities and therapy: Activity programming is a prominent strength: a packed calendar, frequent outings, transportation for shopping and appointments, exercise classes, entertainment, and salon services are commonly cited. On-site therapy and rehabilitation services are available and appreciated by families who needed transitional care. A few reviews mention a desire for more frequent or varied on-site programming in certain units or on specific days, indicating that activity availability can vary and is worth confirming against a current weekly schedule.

Facilities and operations: The physical plant earns strong marks for cleanliness, modern appearance, and apartment size and layout. Housekeeping and maintenance are typically noted as helpful, though some reviews describe variability in cleaning thoroughness and maintenance responsiveness. There are also comments about additional fees for in-room meals and expectations about what is included in rent; transparency about extra charges and billing practices should be clarified during the touring and contracting process.

Management and patterns: Management and leadership receive generally favorable comments for being welcoming and hands-on, and there are mentions of positive changes under new management. Nevertheless, patterns of inconsistent staffing, intermittent communication issues, occasional service lapses, and the pointed allegation of staff-related theft indicate areas for due diligence. Prospective residents and families should request up-to-date information on staffing levels, staff training and background-check policies, incident-reporting practices, meal-service schedules, and a clear fee schedule.

Bottom line: McKay Manor appears to offer a strong independent-living environment with many social, dining, and clinical supports that can improve residents’ quality of life. The dominant strengths are compassionate staff, robust activities, attractive living spaces, and accessible on-site therapy. To address the variability reflected in some reviews, visitors should verify current operational details—especially meal-service consistency, housekeeping and maintenance responsiveness, fee transparency, and safeguards around resident belongings—before making a placement decision.

    About McKay Manor

McKay Manor is a two-story senior living community built in 1999 in Shelbyville, Indiana, and the area's pretty car-dependent because the walk score is just 4, so most folks likely use the free transportation services or guest parking that's offered. The place has studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments with private entrances and individual thermostats, and some units have full-size kitchens and private dining rooms, while others are more semi-private or share some facilities. Residents can bring pets with approval, and there's a pet therapy program for those who like animals around. People living there get home-cooked meals, and guests can share meals with residents anytime, so there's always company at the table if someone wants it. There are common areas with fireplaces, TVs, and spaces for arts and crafts, plus activity studios, a chapel, a piano or organ, card and game rooms, and plenty of spots to relax outdoors, including a gazebo and community gardens.

Inside, there's a beauty salon, barbershop, and on-site haircuts, and there's laundry, dry-cleaning, and housekeeping so folks don't have to worry about chores. The apartments have wired cable and internet. Residents can join social gatherings, entertainment, card parties, Wii bowling, music groups, story time, reading clubs, and lots of structured activities, from exercise classes and group trips to pool time in the indoor or outdoor pools. Religious services and educational lectures are held both on and offsite, and there are community volunteer chances. The staff offers help with VA benefits, financial advice, and support for maintaining independence, with care options that cover assisted living, independent living, memory care, respite care, Alzheimer's care, and short-term stays. Nurses are around 24/7, there are doctor visits in-house, medication help, hospice support, plus both everyday and skilled medical support. The community promises a secure environment where folks don't have to worry about home maintenance, bad weather, taxes, or getting bored, since the social calendar is full and there's always help available for shopping, outings, or getting around town. The place is near restaurants, banks, and the library, so active residents can get where they need to go with a little help from the team or on their own. The main focus is on giving seniors a comfortable apartment, friendly neighbors, meals, and enough things to do that each day feels full, but still peaceful with support as needed.
