    Compassionate staff clean facility thriving

I chose Northbrook and am very pleased - the staff are caring, professional, and attentive, with nurses providing round-the-clock support and real comfort to our family. The older building is well kept and clean, with no odors and uncluttered halls, and my loved one has improved (gained weight and laughs again) while staying engaged with bingo, exercise, happy hour and live entertainment. Communication is strong - nurses and the social worker keep me updated - and I would recommend Northbrook for compassionate, competent care.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews of Northbrook Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center present a mixed picture with clear areas of strength alongside recurring operational concerns. Many accounts highlight a clean, wellโ€‘kept environment and odorโ€‘free common areas. Families and residents frequently praise individual staff members and nursing teams as kind, patient, and effective; roundโ€‘theโ€‘clock nursing availability and attentive administration receive repeated positive mention. Several reviewers described tangible resident improvements, including weight gain and better mood, and noted that the facility offers an active calendar of social events, daily exercise, happy hours, bingo, and live entertainment that support resident engagement and recovery.

Clinical care and staffing elicit divergent impressions. Positive comments emphasize compassionate caregiving, supportive nurses who communicate well with families, and leadership that appears attentive. However, multiple accounts point to inconsistent staffing levels and slow responses to call lights and alarms, which families associate with delayed assistance and extended wait times. There are also concerns framed as gaps in medicationโ€‘management oversight and in hydration/nutrition monitoring that in some cases resulted in hospital transfers; reviewers recommend clarifying medication protocols and clinical-monitoring processes with facility leadership.

Daily care practices and safety are another area of contrast. The facilityโ€™s activity programming and social offerings are noted as strengths, but operational issues such as inconsistent incontinence care and hygiene routines, unreliable meal delivery timing, and weaknesses in fallโ€‘prevention and postโ€‘fall response protocols were raised. These point to variability in frontline caregiving performance and training. Prospective residents should ask about staffing ratios, responseโ€‘time metrics, and the facilityโ€™s fallโ€‘prevention program when evaluating suitability.

Physical plant and property issues are mixed. Many reviewers find the interior clean and comfortable, yet some note outdated furnishings and expressed dissatisfaction with additional furniture fees. A few reviewers raised allegations of missing personal items, which suggests a need to confirm the facilityโ€™s procedures for personalโ€‘property security and inventory. It is advisable to request information about housekeeping schedules, pestโ€‘control practices, and how personal belongings are tracked and protected.

Administrative and financial practices draw both praise and criticism. Leadership and some administrative staff are described as caring and professional, but other reviewers reported billing difficulties, Medicare/insurance claim disputes, and delayed payments. These operational and financial concerns suggest families should review contract terms, ask how claims and disputes are handled, and confirm clarity around any ancillary fees before admission.

In summary, Northbrook appears to offer a supportive social environment and several compassionate, effective caregivers, with strengths in nursing availability and resident engagement programming. At the same time, recurring themes point to operational variability โ€” particularly around staffing consistency, timely response to alarms, medication oversight, hygiene routines, meal delivery, fall management, and property safeguards. A recommended approach for prospective residents and families is to conduct an inโ€‘person tour, request recent inspection and staffing records, ask specific questions about response times and clinical oversight, and review financial/contractual terms to ensure the facilityโ€™s practices match the level of care and accountability they require.

About Northbrook Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center

Northbrook Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, provides nursing home and assisted living services for seniors and has both semi-private and private rooms, with monthly rates ranging from $4,500 to $7,500, and offers a wide range of healthcare support such as nurses, wound care, medication management, and therapies like occupational, physical, and speech therapy, which is helpful for those recovering from strokes or needing long-term care. Residents have access to personal care like bathing, dressing, grooming, and support with walking or wheelchairs, and the center takes care of individual needs with personalized care plans made alongside families who want to stay involved, and always tries to create a warm, welcoming, and home-like environment where being friendly and kind is important to both staff and residents.

Dining services here mean meals are provided in shared dining rooms, and the staff pay attention to nutrition as well as meal enjoyment, which has even earned awards for Best Meals and Dining; there are also active programs for socializing, such as arts and crafts, educational sessions, health activities, devotional events, and plenty of offsite outings that keep people engaged since the community is known for having the Best Activities and values making new memories in later years. For medical support, Northbrook provides podiatry on-site, manages incontinence and diabetic care, helps non-ambulatory residents, and offers regular transportation for appointments or activities, and the team encourages families to ask about different healthcare choices, staff ratios, and to review all licensing and inspection reports before making a decision, because it's important to know about staffing, care levels, and potential payment options, including long-term care insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid.

The center sits at 6420 Council St NE and comes with a total of 130 certified beds but an average daily census of about 67 residents, which gives everyone a little space; property features include housekeeping, game and activity rooms, kitchens and kitchenettes, maintenance staff, guest parking, cable TV in rooms, WiFi and internet, washer and dryer access, along with safety help like handrails, handicap features, and fire sprinkler systems that are all standard for nursing homes. The facility has had some deficiencies during inspections, with reports mentioning things like not fully protecting residents' rights to dignity or self-determination and several environmental issues with safety and cleanliness, and while there's been no actual harm found, the reports showed a potential for harm that families might want to be aware of, with 40 deficiencies and two infection-related deficiencies for not stopping the spread of infections, and a higher-than-average nurse turnover rate at 66.7 percent and a slightly lower nurse staffing rate than the state average, which is something that might matter for people considering this facility.

Northbrook is a for-profit limited liability company owned by Dovid Glenn, Isaac Labkovsky, and Moshe Neiman, and is affiliated with Cypress Healthcare La, plus it is active with the Iowa Health Care Association, Iowa Center for Assisted Living, and the Iowa Center for Home Care, and the staff encourage families to come for a tour or do a virtual visit and suggest checking inspection results or discussing financial options before moving in, to make sure the facility meets a person's specific needs and that everyone's comfortable with the level of care offered.
