    Friendly staff, clean, comfortable community

I'm very impressed - staff (Brittany, Ashley, Angela, Jasmine) were friendly, helpful, and made the process easy. The building is beautiful and clean inside and out, feels home-like, and offers great food (three meals/day), weekly cleaning, almost-daily activities and outings, outdoor spaces, and roomy one-bed apartments with ample storage and appliances. Management is responsible, COVID protocols are followed, and overall it's a well-run place I trust and would recommend.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression is mixed but leans positive with clear strengths in living space, food quality, and staff engagement. Many reviewers praised the facility’s apartments—one-bedroom units described as large, wheelchair-accessible, with walk-in closets and sizable bathrooms—and noted included appliances and ample storage. The campus appearance and outdoor spaces were frequently described as pleasant; several families found the environment home-like and well cared-for. Staffing received consistent commendation: named staff members and general staff attentiveness, friendly interactions, and relatively low turnover were highlighted as important positives.

Care quality and safety comments are variable. Several reviewers described attentive, thorough staff and good clinical management, while others identified inconsistent responsiveness to urgent incidents and concerns about how certain behavioral or safety issues are managed. There are isolated but consequential concerns about security and resident-behavior management, including allegations of missing items from rooms and episodes involving residents whose behavior required additional oversight. Those patterns suggest unevenness in incident response, resident supervision, and room-security practices.

Dining and amenities present a mixed picture. Food quality and taste received favorable remarks from multiple reviewers, and meal frequency (three daily meals) and balanced menus were appreciated. At the same time, reviewers pointed to presentation and aesthetic shortcomings—table settings, dining-room appearance, and photographs not reflecting current conditions—and some perceived meals and ancillary services (barber shop, special meals) as costly. There were also notes about seasoning preferences (excessive salt for one reviewer) and disruptions during maintenance activities (carpet replacement) that affected meal service or resident convenience.

Activities and social programming are a recurring concern. Reviewers described limited and inconsistently delivered programming, constrained transportation for outings (a single bus with sign-up and seating limits was cited), and a desire for a more proactive activities director and a broader schedule (bingo, card games, movie nights, arts and crafts, themed events, casino day with play money, bookmobile visits). Pandemic-related slowdowns were mentioned as a cause of temporary reduction in offerings, but expectations remain for a fuller, more regular calendar and greater resident-accessible outings.

Facility maintenance and housekeeping show variability. Positive comments on routine weekly cleaning coexist with observations of sanitation issues in specific areas (bathroom curtain replacement and some common-area cleaning inconsistencies) and building maintenance problems such as leaking ceilings and cluttered or disorganized community kitchen/dining spaces. These items point to opportunities to strengthen preventive maintenance, common-area organization, and housekeeping consistency.

Management and administrative processes received both praise and criticism. Some families found management responsible and helpful—clear COVID protocols, assistance through admissions, and responsive staff named by reviewers—while others described a burdensome paperwork experience or delays in staff response during urgent events. Value perceptions are mixed: several reviewers consider the community worth the cost given services and apartment size, whereas others feel some ancillary services are overpriced.

In summary, the facility offers many of the hallmarks prospective residents and families seek—spacious, accessible apartments, good food, friendly staff, and pleasant grounds—but exhibits operational inconsistencies that affect experience for some residents. Priority areas for improvement suggested by reviewers are a more structured and well staffed activities program, clearer and more reliable incident-response and security protocols, tighter housekeeping and maintenance follow-through, and attention to dining presentation and ancillary service pricing. Addressing these patterns would align the facility’s evident strengths with a more consistently positive resident experience.

    About Delaware Highlands Asst Living

Delaware Highlands Asst Living sits in Bonner Springs, Kansas, right by a major shopping center and highway, which makes it easy for families to visit or head out for errands. This three-story retirement community serves seniors over 65 in an affordable, income-based setting where you never pay more than your income allows, and it's the only income-based assisted living community in the Midwest, so folks who need a little help but worry about costs might find that important. The facility offers 133 assisted living beds and has 121 one-bedroom apartments with about 550 square feet each, each with a private bathroom, three big closets, a kitchenette with a refrigerator and microwave, cable TV, Wi-Fi from Google Fiber, and air conditioning. Apartments are designed to be barrier-free so mobility challenges don't get in the way. Nurses, caregivers, and support staff are on-site 24/7, including LPNs, CMAs, and CNAs, always ready to provide help with bathing, dressing, transfers, and medication management, and they'll also coordinate with home-health agencies as needed. There's an on-site doctor's office open a couple of days a week, so regular care gets handled without leaving the building.

Meals come three times a day in a dining room with a professional chef handling special diets, whether someone needs diabetes-friendly meals or has allergies. Between meals, residents can stop by the Country Store for simple essentials. For personal care, there's a beauty salon, barber shop, whirlpool, and day-spa, so folks can keep up with their routines or relax a little. Every apartment has emergency alert pendants and bathrooms with pull cords for peace of mind. The community is big on keeping life active, with an art room, music programs, game room, fitness room, and activity space. Family support and move-in coordination make transitioning in easier. Folks can join community-sponsored movies, music, daily wellness programs, and resident-run activities, plus there's a chapel for religious gatherings and weekly Catholic Communion. For getting out and about, the facility arranges transportation, whether it's a scheduled outing or just a trip to appointments, and there's parking available.

Housekeeping, laundry on each floor, and dry cleaning services mean residents don't have to worry about chores. There's a garden, walking paths, and cozy outdoor spots for fresh air. Residents have a private place to call their own but plenty of spaces to gather, like a library, movie theater, and game room. Delaware Highlands Asst Living supports independent as well as assisted living, memory care, and even short-term stays with specialized help if memory or more skilled care becomes needed. They base care plans on each person's needs, do wellness monitoring, and always focus on supporting independence while staying ready to help. The staff includes nurses and aides for round-the-clock care, and the atmosphere is friendly and home-like, with daily activities meant to keep life interesting and meaningful. With a 4.2 out of 5 rating from six reviews, it's likely folks have found it a decent place to settle in, especially if affordability is a concern and a good range of care levels is needed.
