    Caring staff, friends, beats homelessness

I'm very impressed with Fern Terrace - the staff work incredibly hard and provide great care, keeping family proactively informed. I made friends here and, compared with other places I've seen, it's a much better option that for many truly beats homelessness. I'm aware staff are underpaid, which makes their commitment even more meaningful.

    Summary of reviews

Overview: Reviews of Fern Terrace of Mayfield reflect a mixed picture, with several consistent strengths and a number of operational weaknesses that prospective residents and families should evaluate. Positive comments emphasize social connection, continuity for long-term residents, and staff members who are viewed as hardworking and communicative with families. Negative comments focus on facility condition, sanitation, clinical oversight, staff conduct, and financial and regulatory concerns.

Care quality and clinical oversight: Some families described direct, attentive care and noted that staff notify families proactively about changes in condition. At the same time, there are substantive concerns about clinical oversight. Reviewers raised questions about licensed nursing coverage and described medication-administration processes that appear to rely on unlicensed staff, suggesting gaps in medication-safety controls and licensed clinical availability. These are operational traits that can affect safety and should be confirmed with facility documentation and state licensure records.

Staff, communication, and culture: Comments portray staff as hardworking and committed in many interactions, but also describe inconsistent professional conduct and communication tone in other encounters, including unhelpful or abrupt phone responses. Low pay was noted as a factor that may affect staff morale. The pattern suggests variability in staff-resident and staff-family interactions — some families experienced respectful, proactive communication while others reported concerns about responsiveness and conduct.

Facilities, maintenance, and sanitation: Multiple reviewers identified sanitation concerns and specific deficits in bathroom and building maintenance. These descriptions indicate deferred maintenance and sanitation-control issues in common areas and resident rooms, which may affect resident comfort and safety. Prospective families should verify the facility’s recent maintenance records, pest-control protocols, and corrective actions following any health inspections.

Management, safety, and financial controls: There are indications of regulatory and compliance vulnerabilities, including references to state inspection concerns. One reviewer included an allegation of theft and financial misconduct, which is a serious individual claim and would warrant direct inquiry and documentation from management and authorities. Overall, reviewers suggested gaps in financial safeguards and in processes that ensure consistent compliance with regulatory requirements.

Dining and activities: Review content provided limited detail about dining quality. Social life and friendship formation were noted as positive features — long-term residents described the community as a home where they made friends. Activity programming appears sufficient to support resident socialization for those who are engaged.

Notable patterns and advice for families: The reviews are polarized: some families and long-term residents describe Fern Terrace as a supportive home with committed caregivers, while others report operational shortcomings that raise safety and comfort questions. Key items to verify in person include current licensed nursing coverage and medication-administration protocols, recent state inspection and corrective-action history, financial safeguards for residents, and the facility’s sanitation and maintenance plans. An on-site tour, direct conversations with management about staffing and compliance, and review of state survey results will help clarify which of these patterns are current and how the facility has addressed past concerns.

    About Fern Terrace of Mayfield

Fern Terrace of Mayfield sits on a wide stretch of land at 1227 US-45, surrounded by peaceful picnic areas, benches, and a gazebo, and you can spot the long front porch lined with rocking chairs from the road, which always looks inviting even on a cloudy day. The facility has a ranch-style layout and offers private and semi-private rooms, studio and one-bedroom options, with prices starting at $3,645 per month, and every room has its own bathroom, walk-in shower, and choices for handicap-accessible suites and private patios if needed. The staff provides 24-hour support and health monitoring, care with medications, bathing, dressing, and transfers, and the place is set up with a call system, sprinkler system, smoke detectors, and door alarms in each room for safety.

There's a strong feeling of community here, with administrator-led staff focusing on each resident's needs, and you can find large, bright spaces for eating and socializing, plus a computer learning center with instructors to help residents use computers and try new games or projects. Memory care is available, and anyone needing a higher level of support can make that transition when the time comes, especially for those needing Alzheimer's care or therapies for dementia. Co-occurring disorder treatment is one of the special services, along with respite care that gives families short breaks when needed, and the facility is well-adapted to caring for folks with diabetes, incontinence, mobility needs, or who need home care from trained aides.

You'll see chef-prepared meals planned out for balanced nutrition, social activities run by a Certified Activity Director that range from movie nights to bingo, costume contests, themed parties like the Hawaiian luau, and worship services each Sunday morning, and even transportation by churches for those who want to attend services off-site. Residents can bring their cats and dogs, and there's nearby access to health care with the Jackson Purchase Medical Center and pharmacies just up the road, plus a pharmacy within a mile for prescriptions.

The outdoor grounds, with picnic areas and a gazebo, give plenty of chances to spend time outside, while inside the airy living and dining rooms, residents often gather to talk, share meals, or take part in group activities, and special bikes are available if someone wants exercise without leaving the property. Payment options include private pay, SS/SSI, and state supplements, making it open to many, and the staff welcome all seniors, regardless of background. The community, part of a long-established family of personal care homes, has been around for over two centuries, always aiming to help people keep their independence as much as possible while giving support where needed. The Seniorly score is a 7.3, and many photos of the interior and exterior can be seen on their website for a better look at the surroundings. With devotional times, scheduled outings, and an easy-going atmosphere, Fern Terrace of Mayfield tries to be a supportive setting for those looking to age in place while staying close to shops, parks, restaurants, and places of worship around Mayfield.
