    Close clean caring memory care

I chose this community because it's close to home and easy to visit - the brand-new 11-room memory center, secure garden, green space and rubberized walkways put me at ease. The staff are caring, attentive, friendly and prompt; admission was stress-free, the welcome warm, care is round-the-clock, and communications are excellent. The facility is beautiful, very clean and organized, offers independent through memory care, a huge variety of activities and excellent meals - I'm confident my mom will be well cared for.

    Summary of reviews

Poydras Home presents a mix of clear strengths and notable operational concerns. Strengths frequently cited include a well-maintained, attractive campus with secure outdoor spaces and accessible walkways, a full continuum of care from independent living through memory care, and a recently opened dedicated memory-care center. Families also describe a welcoming, streamlined admission experience, active family-visit opportunities, and operational resilience features such as reliable phone service during outages and infection-control measures. A broad activities program and round-the-clock nursing presence are additional positive attributes cited by visitors.

Staff are commonly described as compassionate, attentive, and professional, and many families report respectful, family-centered interactions and strong day-to-day caregiving. At the same time, reviews indicate a pattern of inconsistent staffing levels that can result in delayed assistance for residents. While competent nursing care and strong caregiving are noted in multiple accounts, there is variability in clinical oversight and service delivery that appears to affect some residentsโ€™ experiences.

Dining impressions are mixed. Some families describe high-quality meals and praise specific culinary staff, while others express dissatisfaction with food quality and menu satisfaction. This variability in dining experience is consistent with other accounts of inconsistency in service elements throughout the facility.

Facilities and programming are generally viewed positively: clean interiors, well-kept grounds, and a wide variety of activities. The new memory center and secure garden areas are specific facility improvements that several families highlighted as reasons they feel comfortable choosing the community for a loved one with cognitive impairment.

A recurring concern involves management and leadership. Reviews point to perceived deficits in transparency, responsiveness, and leadership competence, and some describe a decline in service consistency compared with prior expectations. There are also mentions of serious individual complaints, including concerns following a residentโ€™s death and strongly negative family perceptions of management conduct; these are isolated but significant and affect overall confidence for some families. Cost is another consistent themeโ€”many characterize the community as premium-priced, and several express concern about perceived value relative to fees.

In summary, Poydras Home offers substantial physical assets, a comprehensive continuum of care, and many staff who are described as caring and professional. However, prospective residents and families should probe staffing levels and turnover, clinical oversight practices, dining options, and leadership stability when evaluating fit. An in-person visit, sample meal, and specific questions about staffing ratios, incident communication, and contractual terms would help clarify whether the facilityโ€™s strengths align with a familyโ€™s priorities given the reported variability and cost considerations.

    About Poydras Home

Poydras Home sits at 825 Jefferson Avenue in a gated community in historic Uptown, and it's been serving older adults since 1945, now with a range of care that covers independent living, assisted living, memory care, nursing care, adult day care, and in-home care, so if somebody wants to keep a familiar routine while getting help, or if needs grow and more support is needed, the community has ways to adapt. There's an association with NOAGE, which helps provide services and support for LGBTQ+ older adults in New Orleans, adding another layer of understanding and advocacy. The campus has a 3-story building surrounded by well-kept grounds, and the overall feel is friendly and nurturing, with staff who look after residents day and night, offering 24-hour supervision and a call system for safety.

Living spaces vary, so people find private rooms and suites or shared rooms, all with air-conditioning, private bathrooms, kitchenettes, and they're fully furnished, meaning nobody needs to bring much. Residents have cable TV, internet, and phone service in their rooms, and there's plenty of housekeeping and linen help. The Center for Healthy Living adds some options for exercise, recreation, and social events throughout the week, and the Green Houseยฎ Project Model is part of the design, which tries to feel less like an institution and more like home, while letting people choose how much help they get and how they want to live. For meals, the kitchen serves healthy food with organic ingredients, and meals are served in several dining venues, so there's variety, and menu choices consider taste as well as nutrition.

Transportation gets arranged for doctor visits, and help with medication management and daily activities is always ready for those who need it. Organized living arrangements let residents decide what level of care suits their needs, and memory care programs for Alzheimer's are thoughtful, using proven methods. There's also the PHASE Senior Day Program, which gives non-residential care and activities if someone doesn't need to move in full-time but wants support and social opportunities during the day. Parking is available for visitors and residents, so coming and going is straightforward, and for those who want to stay active and social, there's a daily calendar filled with events and engaging programs, and the grounds let people spend time outdoors or just enjoy some peace and quiet. Every part of Poydras Home tries to give older adults the right balance of care, comfort, and independence, all in one well-established community.
