    Extremely clean, professional, caring staff

I'm very pleased with this facility - awesome, extremely clean and well kept, with fantastic, professional staff and a helpful owner, JoAnn. We had zero issues through COVID (no cases for 18+ months) and residents are clearly well cared for; a couple minor tweaks would make it perfect.

    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment from the reviews is mixed but leans toward positive for day-to-day care and facility cleanliness while identifying notable operational problems that affect visitor experience and raise some concerns about clinical oversight. Reviewers repeatedly praise the people and the physical environment: staff are described as friendly, professional, and helpful, and the owner (JoAnn) is singled out as supportive. The property itself is characterized as very well kept, extremely clean, and sanitary. The facilityโ€™s handling of COVID-19 is a clear strength in the reviewersโ€™ view โ€” multiple mentions note no COVID cases for more than 18 months, and residents were described as safe and well cared for through the pandemic period.

Staffing and direct care present a more complicated picture. While staff competence and friendliness are emphasized, reviewers also report that the facility is understaffed. This creates a tension: individual staff members receive praise for their compassion and professionalism, but limited staffing levels appear to produce delays, congestion, and potential service gaps. One reviewer explicitly noted a rapid decline in a patient and expressed concern, suggesting that in at least one instance clinical monitoring or timely response may not have been sufficient. That concern, combined with reports of crowding in a small area, suggests that staffing shortages could be affecting both quality of care and ability to adequately supervise higher-acuity residents.

Operational and communication issues are another consistent theme. Several reviews describe poor communication and visitor-related problems: first-time visitor protocols did not go smoothly, visitors waited a long time to be shown where to go, and staff communication around these processes was described as poor. The absence of clear signage or wayfinding compounded the confusion โ€” reviewers specifically mentioned a lack of signage indicating the correct location. These logistical shortcomings can create a stressful experience for families and guests and reflect weaknesses in front-line organization and visitor management, even when clinical staff are caring and the physical plant is clean.

Facility size and layout are also a recurring concern. Reviewers describe the environment as congested and crowded with many patients in a relatively small area. This crowding can exacerbate the effects of understaffing and complicate infection control, social distancing, and individualized attention โ€” though the facilityโ€™s COVID record was reported positively, ongoing overcrowding remains a notable operational risk and a source of dissatisfaction among reviewers.

There is limited information in the summaries about dining, activities, or programming. The reviews focus primarily on staffing, cleanliness, safety during COVID, and visitor/operational issues. Because dining and activities are not discussed, no reliable conclusions can be drawn from the supplied summary data about the quality, variety, or frequency of resident activities and meals.

In summary, Homestead At Owls Head appears to offer compassionate, professional staff and a very clean, well-maintained facility with a strong COVID-19 safety record โ€” clear strengths that many reviewers highlight. However, persistent operational issues (poor signage, weak visitor protocols, long waits, and communication problems), reported understaffing, and crowding in a small space create important concerns. The mention of a rapid patient decline in one review underscores the need to scrutinize staffing levels and clinical oversight. For prospective residents and families, the facilityโ€™s excellent cleanliness and praised staff are reassuring, but they should seek additional information and clarification about staffing ratios, emergency/medical response policies, visitor procedures, and how the facility is addressing congestion and wayfinding before making placement decisions.

    About Homestead at Owls Head

Homestead At Owls Head sits in Owls Head, Maine, and has served the community since 1998. The setting feels steady and respectful, and the staff aim to support everyone's dignity and independence. This senior living community offers assisted living, nursing care, memory care for those with dementia, and respite care for short-term stays. The place has four year-round units-two apartment-style and two single rooms, though they don't allow pets. Residents get help with daily routines like bathing, dressing, transfers, and medication, and there's always health care staff around for supervision, twenty-four hours a day, every day of the week.

Rooms come fully furnished-some are semi-private one-bedrooms-and every space includes cable, WiFi, and telephone services. Housekeeping and linen changes are standard, and the staff serve meals and help with medication. The community schedules activities, helps with personal care, and offers transportation to medical visits or clinics. The location has a focus on offering both care and personal connections, so seniors can feel safe while keeping as much independence as possible.

The facility builds on unique details too-there are specialized care programs with their own names, and the decor includes items with gold accents, glitter, rhinestones, and embossed or flocked velvet, which make spaces both interesting and comforting for many people. There's a collection of collectible greeting cards, some vintage from the 1920s to 1970s, featuring historical events, holidays like Halloween and Christmas, themed character cards, animal scenes, and even signed or inscribed pieces. Some cards are part of sets, pop-out designs, or hand fans, and you'll find cards like "Golden Era UP Big Boy 4004" and "Louis Wain" illustrations, along with holiday postcards and notecard collections, all with distinctive designs such as black and white horses or historical figures.

Residents and visitors can see these cards on display, and at times, they'll get personalized cards for different occasions, so there's a feeling of tradition and nostalgia throughout the community. The place supports digital features, letting people create and share ePapers, download magazines, or write blogs and news-activities that keep both the residents and broader family circles connected. There are ties to local athletic events, like track and field meet results and rankings, with detailed records and meet management features available, though those details link more to partnerships and service offerings than daily life inside the home.

Homestead At Owls Head keeps a steady focus on comfort, independence, and care, all inside a familiar, friendly setting with a touch of character from its themed collections and community programs.
