    Excellent caring staff and environment

I moved my mom in and have been very pleased. The staff are consistently friendly, caring and attentive, management communicates proactively, and the community is clean, well-maintained and home-like. There are plenty of activities and music, strong dementia care, good dining and real peace of mind - I'd recommend a visit.

    Summary of reviews

HeartLands Assisted Living at Severna Park consistently receives positive feedback on its caregiving and clinical presence. Families and visitors frequently highlight a compassionate, long‑tenured staff and 24‑hour on‑site nursing; many describe medication administration and clinical follow‑through as reliable. Housekeeping and overall cleanliness are commonly cited strengths, and pandemic-era infection‑control measures and family‑facing accommodations (Zoom and porch visits) contributed to an increased sense of safety for several families.

Dining and daily life are emphasized features. The community offers three daily meals, a café/snack bar with fresh fruit and baked goods, grab‑and‑go and room‑service options, and meal accommodations. Reviewers praise themed meals, frequent snacks, and attentive dining staff, though there are repeated notes about inconsistency in meal preparation quality and occasional service shortfalls during busy meal periods. Prospective residents should sample menus and ask about the dining schedule and attendant coverage during a tour.

Activity programming is robust and varied: live music, comedy and entertainment nights, clubs (book, bridge, gourmet), exercise classes, frequent outings and scenic rides, and in‑house events were mentioned positively. Memory‑care programming exists and some families report effective, person‑centered activities for residents with dementia. However, there are also specific concerns that some memory‑care areas have limited stimulation or less active programming; this suggests program quality may vary by unit and should be clarified during a visit.

The physical plant is generally described as well maintained and recently renovated, with a hotel‑like ambience in some areas, accessible suites, wide halls, and amenities such as a salon, therapy/PT services, a pool/hot tub, and an on‑site church. At the same time, reviewers note variability across units: some suites and corridors feel darker or more old‑fashioned, and the building footprint can be confusing for new residents and visitors. Parking is limited and surrounding road traffic was mentioned as a minor access concern.

Operational patterns and management are another consistent theme. Leadership and administrative staff are frequently described as proactive, communicative, and helpful with admissions and transitions; many families report smooth move‑ins and ongoing engagement from management. Counterbalancing this, reviewers raised facility‑level operational weaknesses: periodic staffing shortfalls that affect responsiveness, gaps in emergency‑call follow‑up and resident‑check frequency, and restrictive policies around in‑room monitoring. Cost is also cited as higher than some alternatives, so financial expectations should be discussed up front.

Overall, HeartLands Severna Park presents as a well‑kept, activity‑rich community with strong clinical coverage and a caring staff culture. Its primary strengths are the quality and longevity of staff, comprehensive activities, and maintained amenities. Key areas a prospective resident or family should evaluate on a tour are staffing levels at different times of day, consistency of memory‑care programming in the specific unit under consideration, meal‑service consistency, parking/access logistics, and any facility policies (for example monitoring or admission restrictions) that would affect a particular resident’s needs. These targeted questions will help align the community’s many strengths with individual care priorities.

About HeartLands Assisted Living at Severna Park

HeartLands Assisted Living at Severna Park sits on a wooded lot with well-kept grounds and gives seniors a range of care options, so folks can move in when they need a little help and stay as they need more. The community has assisted living, memory care for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, and offers short-term respite stays. The memory care unit sits in its own building and has safety features, like bracelets with alarms, a computerized wandering system, and call buttons, so that residents who tend to wander or get confused will be safer. Suites in memory care have twin beds, dressers, closets, small beverage carts, and kitchenettes with wood cabinets and granite counters, and offer bathroom features like walk-in showers, grab bars, and wheelchair access. Assisted living suites have plenty of light, comfortable chairs, beds, and private or shared baths. Everyone gets meals included, and the dining setup has options for restaurant-style service, a private dining room, and room service, with special meals for low-sodium or low-sugar diets. There's a café, a bar, a movie theater, an activity studio, and a salon for hair and grooming needs. The indoor heated pool and outdoor pool give options for exercise or relaxing, and there's a gazebo, pond, gardens, and patio with umbrella seating in memory care. Pets like cats and dogs can live here, and there's pet therapy and a dog park, so animals are part of the day too.

The staff covers all hours, including nurses and a doctor on call, and assist with daily living-bathing, transfers, medication, diabetic care, hospice, incontinence, and physical needs, even using mechanical lifts if needed. There are full-time activity directors who plan group trips, game and movie nights, social clubs, arts, classes, and exercise programs, so there's usually something to do. Rehabilitation services like physical, speech, or occupational therapy are on-site, and specialists like podiatrists and dentists visit. Residents can attend chapels and religious services in-house, and there's a computer room, library, and plenty of communal spaces both indoors and out for visits, hobbies, and events. Families can see model apartments and check the grounds in person, and the grand staircase gives the place a hotel-like look inside. The gated property handles parking, transportation, housekeeping, basic cable, and internet, and they even offer volunteer roles and intergenerational programs to keep everyone involved. HeartLands is part of Five Star Senior Living and keeps a focus on dignity, safety, and community for older adults who want choices and steady support as their needs change.
