    Welcoming community with excellent amenities

I toured several places and chose this community - I'm very happy with the decision. It's clean, well-kept and welcoming; staff are friendly and accommodating, the chef prepares good meals, and there are plenty of activities and on-site amenities (transportation, salon, theater, lovely grounds). Reasonable pricing and a low-pressure, family-like atmosphere made the move smooth; I'd recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: The Highlands presents as a modern, hotel‑like independent living community with a strong focus on social engagement and a clean, well‑maintained campus. Many families and residents praise the facility’s appearance, apartment layouts (including balconies and vaulted ceilings in some units), and onsite amenities such as a salon, gym, movie theater, chapel and walking paths. The community operates largely on an all‑inclusive monthly lease model without a large buy‑in, which several reviewers found to be good value compared with remaining at home.

Care and staff: Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, caring, and attentive. Housekeeping and maintenance responsiveness are frequently cited as strengths, with quick repairs and regular cleaning noted. The community follows an age‑in‑place philosophy and is commonly characterized as suitable for fully independent residents and those with very mild cognitive needs; however, clinical and assisted‑living services are limited and the facility relies on outside specialists when higher levels of care are needed. Praise for compassionate drivers, dining wait staff, and an involved activity team is balanced by isolated concerns about staff conduct and variability in the tone and responsiveness of some managers.

Dining: Dining is a focal point of mixed but generally positive feedback. Several reviewers compliment the chef, nutritious meals, and restaurant‑style presentation, and the community offers three meals daily in a large dining room. At the same time, reviewers describe inconsistent food quality across occasions, limited daily menu variety, portions that some consider small, and occasional service process issues (for example, role overlap between dining and cleaning staff). Families seeking a broader or more ethnically varied menu may find the current offerings restrictive.

Activities and social life: Programming is a clear strength. The activity director and staff receive strong praise for proactive scheduling, frequent entertainment, field trips, and resident involvement. The community provides many opportunities for socialization, special events, wine nights, game evenings and outings that contribute to a lively atmosphere. A recurring suggestion is to broaden the variety of daily offerings and increase resident input so activities feel less repetitive for longer‑term residents.

Facilities and amenities: The property is generally described as bright, modern and well cared for, with thoughtful common spaces and unit options across several floor plans. Units favor an apartment‑style layout without full kitchens in most cases; in‑unit laundry and full kitchen appliances are limited or absent, which may be important to some prospective residents. Transportation is available but some reviewers noted a lack of wheelchair‑accessible vans for off‑campus activities. Weekly housekeeping is standard, and grounds and common areas are noted as attractive and clean. There are isolated pest‑control concerns mentioned that merit inquiry during a tour.

Management and operations: Several reviewers noted periods of management turnover and varying levels of responsiveness; this appears to have produced inconsistent experiences around communication, a perceived lack of a single dedicated contact person, and occasional frustration when seeking answers. Conversely, other families praised specific managers and the transition support they received, indicating leadership quality can be uneven. Pricing structure is attractive to many (no buy‑in, inclusive services), but reviewers also describe annual rent increases and a perception in some cases of service decline concurrent with those increases.

Who this fits: The Highlands is best suited for older adults seeking an independent living environment with active social programming, modern accommodations, and a strong hospitality feel — particularly those who value on‑site amenities and a community atmosphere over in‑house clinical services. Prospective residents who require regular assisted‑living nursing care, extensive clinical monitoring, in‑unit kitchens, or guaranteed wheelchair‑accessible transportation should confirm those capabilities in advance. During a visit, families may want to evaluate current dining menus, ask about pest‑control and housekeeping schedules, and clarify whom to contact for ongoing communication to ensure the facility matches their expectations.
