    Private homelike care, poor communication

I had a mixed experience: the relatively new facility felt private and homelike (apartment-style rooms, home-cooked meals, 24/7 staff, PT/OT and visiting nurse, and an administrator with a mental-health background), but communication and responsiveness were lacking. The phone was often out, residents felt isolated, my room (79F) sat uncooled, we were moved without notice, lunch was served again for dinner, family wasn't contacted, and I had concerns about professionalism/neglect and a suspended license despite a later clean state inspection.

    Summary of reviews

This facility presents a mixed profile. Positive aspects cited include a clean, relatively new building with private-style rooms that include living and dining areas, on-site therapy services (PT/OT) and visiting nursing, and round-the-clock staffing. Reviewers also noted home-cooked meals made from scratch and an administrator with a background in mental-health services. Outdoor activities are available, though participation may be seasonally limited by weather.

In terms of care and staffing, the presence of 24/7 staff and therapy services suggests a baseline level of clinical support. However, several reviewers described concerns about staff conduct, timeliness of response to resident needs, and overall professionalism. Examples given point to gaps in care coordination and follow-up: families reported breakdowns in communication, instances of residents being moved or isolated without advance notice, and situations where family members were not contacted about care concerns. These patterns indicate potential weaknesses in incident response and family-notification protocols.

Dining and activities are another area of mixed feedback. The kitchen’s provision of homemade meals is a clear strength, but there are reported inconsistencies in how meals are managed and served, including examples of repeated meal service and related continuity issues. The physical layout (carpeted resident rooms with apartment-style living areas) supports a more private, residential feel, but also limits in-room dining options. Recreational offerings include outdoor outings, though these are constrained by seasonal conditions.

Management and oversight are the most notable areas of concern. Reviewers referenced broken or unreliable phone lines and poor external communication, which compounds family frustration when clinical or logistical issues arise. More seriously, there are references to documented regulatory actions and investigations that suggest broader compliance and oversight problems. Taken together, the pattern of communication failures, care-coordination gaps, environmental-control inconsistencies (for example, temperature/AC issues), and regulatory scrutiny warrant careful verification by prospective residents and families. Recommended due diligence includes checking current licensing and inspection records, asking for the facility’s incident-reporting and family-communication protocols, and speaking with current families about day-to-day responsiveness and staff conduct.

    About S & D Senior Living Home

S & D Senior Living Home sits in a quiet neighborhood at 1359 South Colling Road in Caro, MI, offering care for seniors in a comfortable, home-like setting, and you'll find they provide support for daily activities like bathing, dressing, and managing medications, which really helps people keep their dignity and independence when everyday tasks get harder. This place is what they call an Adult Medium Group Home, licensed for up to 10 residents, and you'll notice right away the small size helps everyone form close connections with staff and neighbors. They've got private rooms and shared common spaces that are clean and cozy, and they make sure meals are tasty, balanced, and served in the dining room, while respecting special diets like diabetes care or allergies. They help with personal care, transfers, grooming, laundry, and housekeeping, and they always have staff around, day or night, so that safety and needs are managed right when somebody needs something.

It's good if you want something more homelike and less like a big nursing home, and the monthly price for a private room, $1,825, stays lower than most places in the county or state, which is a relief for a lot of families. Residents have access to engaging activities every day, whether it's movie nights, outings, or just spending time in the garden or walking paths, and staff will even help with transportation for medical appointments or errands. They'll coordinate with doctors, oversee medicines, and even sort out physical and occupational therapy if that's needed to help residents maintain their strength.

Special meals for those with allergies or health concerns, high-speed internet, and cable TV are just some comforts that add to quality of life, and they do allow residents to feel at ease while being monitored with emergency alert systems and regular check-ins. The home welcomes aged residents who need daily support but still want privacy, and with a licensed capacity for a small group, caregivers give each person more attention. They're not certified by Medicare or Medicaid, so families should plan for private payment, and the home is actively licensed through at least April 2027, with regular inspections and reports available. S & D Senior Living Home includes assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing if needed, mixing independence with help so folks can age safely and comfortably in familiar surroundings. Staff help coordinate family involvement, and the overall environment is warm, clean, and peaceful, focused on letting each resident feel safe, valued, and at home.
