    Kind attentive staff comfortable home

I toured this Detroit facility and was very pleased. The staff - especially Ms. Susan and Lamont - are kind, attentive, and clearly go above and beyond; management is approachable. The building is clean, secure and home-like with private, roomy rooms, solid memory-care expertise, engaging activities (arts & crafts, movies with popcorn, holiday events) and home-cooked meals. Affordable, well-managed, and the residents seem happy and thriving.

    Summary of reviews

St. Joseph's Manor elicits strongly mixed impressions. Many accounts emphasize compassionate caregiving, a specialized memory-care program, private-room options, and a secure environment. Reviewers who had positive experiences describe attentive, emotionally engaged staff who participate in activities, create a home-like atmosphere, and maintain approachable leadership. The facility's affordability and availability of financial-assistance options are cited as clear strengths, as are engaging social programs (arts, parties, movies) and an accessible dining room offering home-cooked-style meals.

Care and staff are the most polarized areas. Positive narratives highlight well-trained, humorous, and nurturing caregivers who go above and beyond, contributing to resident happiness and health. Conversely, a number of accounts describe chronic staffing issues: high turnover, periods of severe understaffing, and slow or inconsistent responsiveness. These workforce fluctuations are linked to delays in communication with families and inconsistent follow-through on clinical concerns. There are also repeated notes about variable staff professionalism and occasional concerns about the tone or responsiveness of specific employees.

Dining and activities show a similar split. Several reviewers praise the social programming and resident involvement, noting arts and crafts, themed events, and resident-centered meals. Others find the food merely adequate or inconsistent and describe a lack of culinary leadership at times. Transportation and ancillary services are occasionally cited as limited — transport may be fee-based with a single driver — and laundry handling has been problematic for some families.

The physical plant is another mixed area. Some guests report clean, spacious rooms and well-kept common areas; others describe an outdated appearance, maintenance backlogs, sanitation concerns in particular areas, and pest-control or laundry-management weaknesses. Availability of private apartments appears limited in parts of the community, with some units sharing bathrooms. Trash pickup frequency and other housekeeping routines were noted as inconsistent by several observers.

Management and communication are recurrent themes. Positive comments single out approachable, helpful leadership and specific staff members praised for customer service. Criticisms focus on unclear billing practices, hidden charges, slow or ineffective communication with families, and perceived declines in management quality after leadership changes. A subset of reviews mentions reduced clinical capacity and more restrictive resident movement during staffing or infection-control events, which affected admissions and daily routines.

Taken together, St. Joseph's Manor may suit families seeking an affordable, memory-care–focused community with engaged staff and active programming, provided they confirm current staffing levels, housekeeping routines, and the availability of private accommodations. Prospective residents and families would benefit from an in-person tour focused on recent housekeeping practices, pest-control and laundry procedures, staffing ratios on the unit(s) of interest, dining oversight, and a clear written summary of fees and communication protocols before making a decision.

    About St Joseph's Manor

St Joseph's Manor sits on three peaceful acres near Lake St. Clair, where you see a three-story building and a yard with walking paths, a big patio, and a gazebo that gets good use during nice weather, and you can always feel some calm with mature trees and the sun shining. The community is for seniors aged 55 and older, and it keeps things simple, offering a mix of private rooms-studios, one-bedrooms, two-bedrooms, and semi-private-all either furnished or unfurnished, so residents can choose what fits them best, even if they just want a short respite stay, and all the rooms have safety features, including wheelchair accessible showers and emergency call systems. Meals come three times a day and snacks are always available, with the cooks making sure there are kosher and vegetarian options when somebody asks for them, and sometimes you just want a snack or a cold drink, and there are vending machines for that, which is handy.

Assisted living sits at the core here, and staff help with things like medication, bathing, dressing, and gentle reminders for anyone who needs them, and there's always awake staff 24 hours a day, so emergencies get prompt attention, and doctors come by regularly, with on-call physicians for health needs big or small. For those who have trouble moving around, transfers get handled by staff using everything from standby help to mechanical lifts for safety, and home health and hospice care come to help as care needs change. Specialized Alzheimer's and memory care happen in a separate section, with safety in mind, using alarms and secure entrances to help those who wander, and there's a plan for major behavioral challenges, with trained staff that know what to do if someone gets confused or physically upset.

The Manor has a private chapel used for all kinds of religious services and people from different denominations visit, so spiritual well-being doesn't get left behind for anyone who wants comfort or community. Activities fill the days with movie nights in a little in-house theater, games, arts and crafts, bingo, reading in the library, and regular exercise programs to keep bodies moving, while outings make it easy to visit local parks, shops, and restaurants, especially with the community near a busline, plus resident parking and some paid transportation for appointments or errands. The outside is just as important, with much-loved walking paths, a big patio, a fenced garden, and a swing under the gazebo, where even people who don't talk much like to sit for a while; smoking's allowed outside for those who need it.

There's on-site beauty care from a visiting beautician and barber, and therapy services like physical, occupational, and speech therapy come from healthcare professionals who visit regularly, so residents keep up their strength if needed. Medical support handles things like diabetes care, insulin injections, blood sugar checks, and incontinence, using reminders and monitoring as needed, and residents with high care needs have options, though fees go up as needs increase, with a basic community fee when moving in, and clear structures for care, respite, or short-term stays. The Manor's "aging in place" approach lets most residents stay in familiar surroundings as care needs change, relying on staff who treat them with respect, patience, and a steady hand through the good days and harder ones. Daily life encourages independence while offering help when it's needed, and family input gets used to shape care plans, aiming to support each person's interests, routines, and dignity, so comfort and respect don't fall by the wayside, even as the years pass.
