    Compassionate staff and comfortable home

I moved my mom to Oakhaven Manor and have been very pleased - compassionate, friendly staff who go above and beyond, a clean comfortable apartment, and lots of daily activities and outings that helped her make friends. Dining is good, shuttle and maintenance are responsive, and amenities (library, theater, fitness, crafts) make it feel like home. Good value for the money - I would recommend it to others.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Oakhaven Manor is presented consistently as an active independent-living community with substantial strengths in staff engagement, social programming, and facility amenities. Many accounts emphasize a warm, home-like atmosphere, frequent activities, and staff members who go beyond baseline expectations to help residents and families. Long-term residents frequently describe strong social ties and satisfaction with the community environment.

Care and staffing: Care at Oakhaven appears focused on independent-living needs rather than higher-acuity clinical services. Multiple reviews highlight compassionate individual caregivers and front-line staff who provide personalized attention, transportation assistance, and practical help with errands and appointments. At the same time, families should note that the community is primarily oriented toward independent residents; those who require escalating medical or assisted-care services may find the setting limited. Staffing quality is uneven in the accounts: many describe courteous, helpful staff and fast maintenance response, while others point to variable management tone, weekend staffing gaps, and occasional lapses in responsiveness.

Dining: Dining is a mixed point. The menu is often described as tasty and varied, with meal-delivery available and popular dining-room service when offered. However, the facility’s meal model has constraints—some reviews mention a dinner-only service or limited meal windows, and there are recurring concerns about additional a la carte charges and perceived expense for some families. Prospective residents should verify the current meal schedule, pricing structure, and whether meal options meet their expectations and dietary needs.

Activities and social life: Oakhaven’s activities program is a clear strength. Reviews repeatedly cite an enthusiastic activities director, robust arts-and-crafts programming, games, exercise classes, in-house theater, weekly outings, and faith-based services. These offerings contribute to a lively, engaged resident community and support independent living and social interaction. Pandemic-related limits affected activity availability at times; prospective residents should confirm current program levels.

Facilities and maintenance: The physical plant and amenities—including renovated apartments, attractive common areas, a theater, library, exercise room, beauty shop, and outdoor views—are frequently praised. Maintenance performance is described inconsistently: some reviewers report prompt repairs and well-kept grounds, while others describe persistent repair backlogs and occasional infrastructure issues (plumbing, HVAC). Confirming recent capital improvements and the facility’s current maintenance responsiveness is advisable.

Management and operations: Management impressions vary. Many reviewers praise staff who learn names, provide individualized service, and foster community. Conversely, others describe inconsistent communication, an abrasive management style, locked or understaffed offices on weekends, and privacy/communication-process concerns. Financial and administrative considerations also arise: waitlists for financial aid or placement and questions about cost and value are recurring themes. Prospective residents and families should ask about weekend staffing, grievance processes, financial-assistance waitlists, and current leadership practices.

Who this fits best: Oakhaven Manor is best suited for older adults seeking an active independent-living community with ample social programming, on-site amenities, and a cohesive resident culture. It may be less appropriate for those needing frequent clinical oversight or assisted living services. Families should evaluate affordability, dining model, accessibility for mobility devices, and recent maintenance responsiveness during a tour and when speaking with current residents.

Bottom line: The community offers many strengths—engaged staff, robust activities, good dining when available, and attractive facilities—but also shows variability in operational areas such as maintenance follow-through, management communication, and service-model limitations. A targeted tour and specific questions about costs, staffing patterns, and repair response times will help determine whether Oakhaven Manor matches an individual resident’s priorities and care needs.

    About Oakhaven Manor

Oakhaven Manor sits on Ashebury Lane in Howell, Michigan, and has 112 units set up for seniors aged 55 or better, offering a choice of spacious one- or two-bedroom apartments with full kitchens, central air, walk-in showers, private patios or balconies, and storage closets, which makes daily living comfortable and convenient, and you'll find the grounds are well kept, with a feeling of community throughout the place. Some apartments have ovens, refrigerators, fireplaces, carpets, and ceiling fans, and there's plenty of parking, including options for covered, surface, and even attached garages, which can be helpful when the weather turns. The buildings are set up with features like a laundry facility and storage, plus easy access to the library, fitness center, arts and crafts studio, mini theater, billiards lounge, cards and games gallery, convenience store, and common areas with a fireplace and room for both indoor and outdoor gatherings. Some amenities, like the beauty/barber salon and organized group transportation, are right onsite, and if you want, they offer extra services-Haven Handy Person repairs, housekeeping, meals, home health care, and laundry, all optional but there if you need them. Residents have central monitored pull cords in case there's a problem and free Wi-Fi so they can stay in touch with family or catch up on news. Activities on and off site fill the social calendar most days, with programs planned to help folks stay active, independent, and make new friends, and there's a focus on social, educational, and entertaining events, whether it's crafts, exercise, games, movies, or shared meals made from balanced, nutritious ingredients. Staff at Oakhaven Manor want to be helpful, friendly, and respectful, and they're easy to approach if something comes up or if you're looking for company, because the aim is for everybody to feel safe, welcomed, and comfortable. The place allows cats and small dogs within restrictions, so residents can bring their companion animals, and there's policy and support in place to help keep it all well managed. There's no pool or accessible apartments here, and residents do need to pay for their own utilities, but maintenance is handled by the property and the lifestyle is set up to keep things as worry-free as possible. The atmosphere is described as lively and close-knit, with folks encouraged to share old hobbies or try new ones, and it's the sort of place that focuses on friends, fellowship, and fun rather than fuss and perfection.
