    Caring attentive staff, clean facility

I placed my mom here and am very pleased. The staff are caring, supportive and easy to work with; nursing is attentive with helpful night checks and bathroom assistance. Her apartment is roomy with a kitchenette and large bath, housekeeping is immaculate, and the grounds are secure and beautifully maintained with two courtyards. There are plenty of daily activities, field trips, Bingo, monthly Mass and weekly church outings, plus a snack cart and daily ice cream-she's made friends and really enjoys the food. Communication has been excellent and I would recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

Edgewood Alexandria presents a mixed picture. Many families praise the residential environment—private apartments with kitchenettes, attractive outdoor courtyards and patios, and a homey atmosphere that supports social connection. The community offers a variety of daily activities, organized outings, gardening, Bingo and holiday events, plus spiritual services such as monthly Mass and weekly church groups. Snack offerings, including a cart with cookies and frequent ice cream, were highlighted as a positive feature.

Clinical care elements earn both positive and cautionary notes. Several accounts describe caring, attentive staff and a visible nursing presence with routine night checks and assistance for bathroom needs. At the same time, reviewers describe periods when staffing levels appear strained, with resulting delays or inconsistent completion of basic personal-care tasks. Prospective families should ask about current staffing ratios, overnight coverage, and protocols for bathing, nail care and other recurring needs.

Dining and housekeeping show variability. Some residents and families compliment the food and on-site meal service; others describe bland or overcooked meals and uneven quality from day to day. Housekeeping received conflicting feedback as well: some reviewers described immaculate rooms and regular laundry assistance, while others cited missed trash removal, room cleanliness issues and gaps in housekeeping follow-through. These inconsistencies suggest asking for the facility’s housekeeping schedule and meal-planning processes during a visit.

Management and administrative patterns were a significant source of concern for some families. Complaints include difficult or inconsistent communication from management, challenges reaching staff by phone, and specific allegations related to move-in handling, furniture placement and deposits. There were also comments signaling difficulties coordinating transitions for residents with memory-care needs. These items are operational in nature; families should request written move-in procedures, communication protocols, and documentation of financial deposit and furniture-handling policies.

Overall impression: the community offers strong social programming, a pleasant physical environment and many staff who are described as compassionate and helpful. However, patterns of inconsistent staffing, variable housekeeping and dining quality, and administrative communication gaps temper that positive picture. Recommended next steps for prospective residents and families are to tour multiple units, meet the nursing leadership, review staffing schedules, inspect housekeeping and dining plans, and obtain clear written policies for move-in, billing and memory-care transitions before committing.

    About Edgewood Alexandria

Edgewood Alexandria sits at 1902 7th Ave. E in Alexandria, Minnesota, and has been around since at least 2012, right in the peaceful lake country with trees and gardens to enjoy, and offers assisted living, memory care, independent living, short-term stays, and adult day services so folks can find the type of care or support they need as they age. The staff includes licensed nurses and trained caregivers present all day and all night to help with things like bathing, showering, dressing, medication, and moving around the building, and the community pays special attention to residents with Alzheimer's or dementia, using tools like Life Stations and memory care training for the staff, plus safety measures to keep everyone secure, including emergency pendant systems and secured environments to prevent wandering. Folks living at Edgewood Alexandria will find furnished studio apartments with kitchenettes, as well as shared areas like a sunroom, game room with billiards, a community dining room, bistro, and a chapel for worship, so there's space for quiet time or social time depending on the mood, and there's a barber and beauty salon on site when someone needs a haircut or wants a bit of pampering without needing to leave the property. The staff handles personal laundry and linens, keeps the rooms tidy, helps with housekeeping, and gets residents to appointments and community events using their transportation services, plus activities like arts and crafts, singalongs, games, light exercise, bingo, and offsite trips happen regularly to keep everybody's mind and body engaged. There's a library for reading, a movie theater for film nights, organized field trips to enjoy, plus special amenities like a sunroom, garden with walking paths, and a patio where residents, family, and friends can sit and look out over peaceful landscaping, and those who like a bit of quiet can enjoy the outdoors too without going far. The community takes payments by credit card or check, offers cost assistance programs, and even helps veterans and their families navigate VA benefits like Aid and Attendance to ease the costs of care. As meals are a big part of life here, food is prepared by chefs who watch out for dietary needs or allergies, so residents can always find something safe and nourishing to eat, and family can join in for a meal thanks to a family dining room for special occasions or Sunday gatherings. For those needing extra healthcare, Edgewood Alexandria provides blood pressure and sugar checks, medication management, help with hygiene, and arrangements with outside providers for rehabilitation or therapy services. The community fits 59 units with 60 beds, which means it's not too large but not too small, and every resident has access to phone service and television in their rooms, as well as help moving in and getting settled. There are options for folks who need nursing home-level care, non-ambulatory support, and dementia waivers, and the building comes equipped with an emergency alert system to ensure quick response any time of day. Residents can join religious services onsite or offsite and use the chapel for worship, with the staff ready to offer gentle companionship, recreation, financial advice, and guidance about managing money if needed. Edgewood Alexandria also connects people to their other locations in nearby Minnesota cities, and tries to balance the need for privacy and support, offering a choice of social activities and quiet spaces depending on how each day feels, and those looking for a trial period or a break can stay for a short-term or respite stay, which is handy if family or caregivers take a trip or just need some rest themselves. In all, Edgewood Alexandria's about balancing independence with care, making sure everyone feels safe, has their needs met, and gets a little help when they ask for it, all in a tranquil setting that makes it easier to enjoy each day as it comes.
