    Welcoming community with great amenities

I live here and immediately felt welcomed - staff are warm, professional, and the residents are friendly, so it really feels like home. Meals are excellent, the dining room is bright, and there's a full slate of activities, outings on the community bus, plus meaningful chaplain-led grief support. Our sunny, spacious apartment, beautiful landscaping, well-maintained building and amenities (library, wood shop, billiards) make this a very satisfying community I'd recommend.

    Summary of reviews

Scandia Shores Community presents a mixed but distinctive profile. Strengths revolve around a strong social culture, visible groundskeeping, and well-appointed common spaces. Many reviewers praised friendly, professional staff, bright apartments and corridors, attractive landscaping with a paved walking trail and gardens, and a broad set of amenities (garage, wood shop, billiards, library, recreation areas). The independent-living environment is described as welcoming and home-like, with long-tenured residents contributing to a settled community feeling.

Activities and social programming are a clear asset. The community offers a wide variety of planned events — exercise classes, music, game nights, guest speakers, holiday meals, and regular outings via a community van — which reviewers linked to resident engagement and socialization. Spiritual and bereavement support (including chaplain-led classes) was noted as an important resource for residents and families. Tours and move-in assistance are generally described as thorough and helpful.

Dining receives mixed feedback. Several reviewers described an appealing dining-room atmosphere and balanced, varied meals that support appetite and nutrition. At the same time, there are consistent concerns about food quality and temperature control, and some reviewers described sanitation and cleanliness problems in dining and other common areas. The facility operates a mandatory meal-plan policy for many residents, and reviewers expressed sensitivity to both the policy and recent price increases.

Operational and management patterns are a prominent area of concern. Multiple comments point to inconsistent housekeeping and maintenance standards, with particular frustration about maintenance responsiveness on weekends and delayed attention to building issues. There are critiques of on-site leadership effectiveness and a perception that corporate priorities emphasize occupancy over ongoing facility upkeep. Communication challenges — difficulty reaching staff by phone and uneven responsiveness — were also noted.

Care scope and safety warrant careful consideration. The community is positioned for independent living and reviewers noted the absence of a care continuum for higher-acuity needs; families seeking assisted living or memory-care transitions should verify transfer options and affiliated services. More seriously, one review describes an allegation of resident-on-resident violence that prompted police involvement; this, together with other comments about incident handling, suggests prospective families should ask specific questions about security, incident-response protocols, and how leadership communicates about serious events.

In summary, Scandia Shores appears well suited to independent residents seeking an active, social community with good landscaping and a variety of amenities. Prospective residents and families should balance these strengths against documented operational weaknesses: inconsistent cleanliness and food service, weekend maintenance gaps, communication challenges, pricing and meal-plan requirements, and limitations in on-site clinical services and transport for medical appointments. A focused tour that includes conversations about maintenance response times, meal policies, incident-reporting procedures, and transportation options will help determine whether the community matches an individual’s priorities and risk tolerance.

    About Scandia Shores Community

Scandia Shores Community sits at 418 Highway 96 W in Shoreview, right north of St. Paul, and folks describe it as a peaceful and friendly place where people look out for each other and usually say hello in the hallways or join in a game of cards if you ask them. The building is smoke-free indoors and pet-friendly, welcoming both cats and dogs, and if you step outside you'll see landscaped gardens, a community courtyard, outdoor patios with benches, and walking paths connecting to trails near Snail Lake, so it's easy to spend time in nature or go for a gentle walk with a friend. Every apartment comes with either one or two bedrooms, walk-in storage, and a private deck or patio, plus you'll find laundry on every floor, garage parking, and a car wash bay for those who still drive, so convenience is really built in all around.

The staff around here have a reputation for being cheerful, helpful, and kind, whether they're working the front desk, leading an activity, or helping out with services like maintenance or transportation-people say the staff make a real difference in the way daily life feels. The community calendar is pretty full, so there's always something going on, with a mix of fitness classes, church services, book clubs, outings to local spots, bingo games, garden projects, and more, and there are chaplaincy programs for anyone who wants spiritual support or connection. Most days, residents get together in shared spaces like the fitness center, library, wood shop, game room, and salon, and people often remark how these spots give everyone a chance to meet new folks or share hobbies, whether it's pool or a good book or just a cup of coffee.

Meals are available at noon and in the evenings, with different packages to match different appetites and tastes, and the kitchen staff do their best to make meals nutritious and still tasty. Security is steady, with controlled entry, and the building offers services like wireless internet, bike storage, transportation for errands or outings, and business amenities if residents need some office space. Scandia Shores offers a broad range of care options that include independent living, assisted living, long-term care, memory care, transitional care, home health, and hospice care, and the community is part of Presbyterian Homes & Services, which means it's a faith-based, nonprofit organization with a Christian mission, though everyone is welcome regardless of background or beliefs. Residents support each other, and the community values faith, service, and diversity, so the place tends to feel supportive without being pushy. Folks can choose from six floor plans, and with 108 apartments at market-rate and moderate prices, most find something to suit their needs while living close to local shops, churches, and parks in Shoreview. Overall, Scandia Shores Community is a calm, well-run place where people find plenty to do, good company, supportive staff, and a strong sense of belonging.
