    Warm home-like community caring staff

I toured this community for my mom and was impressed by the warm, home-like atmosphere and exceptionally caring staff across departments (Meg in activities, Chef Michael and Darla in dining, plus Nick, CJ, Jackie, Sabrina and Rachel). The facility is clean and bright with a lovely courtyard and library, spacious rooms, varied delicious meals, and attentive, resident-centered care - I'm very pleased and would recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Spencer Place is consistently described as a small, home-like assisted living community with a strong emphasis on personalized, family-centered care. Reviewers frequently praise frontline staff for compassion, attentiveness, and a willingness to go beyond assigned duties; many accounts highlight individual caregivers, activities staff, and dining personnel as central to residents’ satisfaction. The facility’s one-floor, dementia-friendly layout, along with licensed nursing coverage and 24/7 assistants, supports residents who need routine assistance while preserving a residential atmosphere.

Dining and activities are commonly cited strengths. A number of families describe restaurant-style dining with menu choices, a skilled chef, and special touches such as an ice cream area and accommodated favorites. The activities program is active and varied—bingo, exercise classes, movies, live entertainment, salon services, weekly outings and transportation for appointments are all noted as regular offerings. Weekly personal-care services (shampoo, manicures) and spa/whirlpool amenities add to the facility’s social and wellness programming.

The physical environment receives positive comments for cleanliness and outdoor spaces: an interior courtyard with gardens, bird feeders and seating is often described as well maintained and central to community life. Rooms are characterized as spacious, with some units offering private and semi-private configurations and extras such as ceiling fans and basic cable. Housekeeping and laundry services included in the care package are viewed as practical strengths for residents and families.

Despite these positives, several operational patterns recur across reviews. Communication and management presence are uneven: families noted variability in leadership visibility and in nursing-leadership communication. Operational weaknesses include delays in medication administration and slow responses to call buttons, as well as gaps in inter-shift handoffs that can affect continuity of care. Some reviewers raised odor concerns in common areas and insufficient lighting in certain rooms. While many praised the food, others described inconsistent meal taste or quality between service times. There are also recurring notes about limited private bathing availability and the facility’s suitability for residents requiring higher-acuity, physically active care.

A small number of reviews raised serious procedural concerns, including allegations about mishandling of personal belongings and communication after hospitalization or discharge; these accounts are distinct from the majority of positive reports but are operationally significant and warrant inquiry during a tour or admissions discussion. Pricing was described as higher than some families expected, so prospective residents should clarify what is included in the published daily charge and compare value against required care levels.

Overall, Spencer Place appears well suited to residents who prioritize a close-knit, activity-rich environment with attentive personal care and strong dining/amenity offerings. Prospective families should confirm current leadership and nursing coverage, review medication- and call-response protocols, inspect lighting and bathing arrangements during a visit, and ask specific questions about handling of belongings and post-discharge procedures to ensure the community matches the prospective resident’s clinical and personal needs.
