    Caring professional staff excellent facilities

I've had my mother here for five years and I'm very pleased - the care is fantastic, staff are professional, patient and genuinely caring, and the owner's dedication shows. The facilities are spotless, rooms are large with balconies, meals are excellent, and the small, stately Montclair setting feels personal and peaceful rather than corporate. I highly recommend this place and feel it offers excellent value.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviews present a mixed but generally favorable picture centering on strong caregiving and a small, personal setting. Many families emphasized attentive, patient, and professional staff who provide individualized attention; several accounts note long-term residents receiving consistent care. The community’s proprietor involvement and a sense of a personally run, non-corporate atmosphere are recurring positives that contribute to perceptions of good value and steady management.

Care and staff: Staff behavior and caregiving quality are the most consistently praised elements. Comments describe caregivers as caring, supportive, and professional, with staff taking extra time when needed. These observations align with reports of stable, multi-year resident stays and family recommendations, suggesting reliable day-to-day care and effective staff–family communication in many cases.

Dining: Dining receives favorable mention, with multiple notes about excellent meals and positive food quality. The dining program appears to be a clear strength and supports family confidence in routine nutrition and mealtime experience.

Activities and social programming: A notable pattern of concern is limited activity and exercise programming. Reviewers described few organized activities and minimal exercise opportunities, and the facility’s small resident count appears to constrain social programming and peer interaction. Prospective residents who prioritize a robust activity calendar or group exercise options should confirm current offerings before committing.

Facilities and accessibility: Comments about the physical plant are mixed. Some reviewers described clean, well-maintained interiors, while others raised cleanliness and sanitation inconsistencies and characterized parts of the property as dated. The absence of an elevator in sections of the building was specifically mentioned and is reflected here as a broader accessibility limitation. Outdoor space is limited or absent, which may affect residents who value outdoor walking areas or garden access.

Management and notable patterns: Ownership engagement and a personal management style are cited as strengths that affect staff culture and perceived value. However, reviewers also described variability in how the community is presented during tours and in unit condition; this suggests that presentation and readiness at admission may be inconsistent. Overall, the facility appears to be a fit for families seeking a smaller, home-like environment with compassionate caregiving and good dining at an affordable price, while those seeking extensive activities, larger social programming, modernized facilities, or robust outdoor and accessibility features may want to verify current offerings and recent improvements prior to enrollment.

    About Horizon Manor

Horizon Manor sits in two Victorian-style inns with Tudor architecture, set up to feel like a homey country inn, and the property has spacious verandas, well-tended gardens, and comfortable indoor spaces like an elegant parlor and dining room that keeps a bit of historic charm, so you walk in and get that relaxed, welcoming feeling, and some rooms have century-style appointments while others come in studio or semi-private layouts, all with climate control, generous closets, and private or shared bathrooms; seniors live here with levels of care that include independent living, assisted living, memory care for people with Alzheimer's or dementia, long-term care for chronic illness, and respite care for those needing short term stays after surgery or injury, and folks also can receive non-medical aid in their homes through Horizon Manor's home care service. Residents can keep pets, spend time with neighbors in common areas, or use outdoor smoking areas. Meals-breakfast in rooms, lunch and supper in a dining room-are prepared on-site daily and menus can work with special diets, like low-sodium or low-sugar plans, and there's private dining or room service if needed, so people always have options for meals and snacks.

Everyone gets daily maid service, laundry, help with bathing, dressing, and reminders for personal care if needed, and for those who need more help, staff are trained to handle one- or two-person transfers or mechanical lifts. Nurses' aides stay on-site around the clock, registered nurses stop by weekly, and there's a doctor on call and visiting specialists, like podiatrists and cardiologists, plus physical and occupational therapists, so there's support for regular health needs and emergencies. All medications are supervised and given with care by medication managers. Horizon Manor's programs aim to keep people active and engaged, so every week brings a mix of social events, games, music-often featuring tunes and films from the 40s and 50s to keep things familiar and entertaining-plus educational activities and off-site devotional services for those who want spiritual connection. Residents with dementia or memory trouble are protected by a secured building and special wander-alert systems, and the staff watches for folks at risk for elopement, physical acting out, or challenging behavior, with behavioral care and memory programs designed for safety and dignity, including individualized wellness plans, activities for memory support, and secure spaces.

The care team helps with grooming and toileting, offers standby assistance, and uses technology like bracelets and computer alerts to keep residents safe if anyone tries to leave a safe area, and families know their loved ones are monitored and supported all the time. Some residents live in the independent living apartments, where the chores are handled, so they can focus on hobbies, activities, and making friends, but folks can remain in their same community as needs change, since extra help is added as needed, making moves less stressful. Pricing for rooms usually falls in the affordable range, with choices like one-bedrooms or shared options, and it's known for offering supportive care for many different health issues, all in a familiar, home-like setting where residents often know the staff and other people by name. Transportation is available for a fee, the bus line isn't far, and the community tries to make things as comfortable and easy as possible, so residents can live their lives with the support they need while keeping as much independence as they want, and families say their loved ones seem at home.
