    Immaculate secure community with amenities

I'm impressed - the place is immaculate, secure and peaceful, with beautiful updated apartments and tasteful décor. Staff are proud and friendly, meals are tasty, and there are abundant activities and amenities (pool, fitness center, library, trips and more); fees cover housekeeping, maintenance and utilities. Renovations and new additions keep the property fresh, and I'm looking forward to moving in.

    Summary of reviews

Good Shepherd Village at Endwell presents as a high-quality, well-maintained senior living community with a strong physical plant and a broad range of resident amenities. Multiple reviews emphasize the attractive architecture, newly renovated apartments and cottages, generous storage, and pleasant interior features such as cathedral ceilings and abundant window light. The community offers a full complement of on-site amenities — pool, fitness center, library, dining rooms, and programmed activities — and supports residents across levels of care from independent living through nursing. Its location near town services and transport to appointments is also noted as convenient.

Amenities and activities are a clear strength. Reviewers describe a lively activity calendar (including bowling, theatrical outings, and organized trips), well-equipped wellness facilities, and social dining environments. Many families and prospective residents praise the cleanliness and appearance of public spaces and individual units; staff pride in facility upkeep is a recurrent theme. Several comments also note that fees include housekeeping, maintenance, utilities and meal allowances, which many families find helpful in budgeting despite the overall cost.

Dining impressions are mixed. Some reviewers describe elevated meal experiences, including special pairings and consistently good food, while others find the regular dining offerings inconsistent or frequently unsatisfactory. Prospective residents should expect variability in meal quality and ask for sample menus or a trial meal when evaluating the community.

Care and staffing show both strengths and areas for inquiry. The community accommodates multiple care levels and many reviewers found staff pleasant and helpful during tours and routine interactions. At the same time, there are repeated notes about rushed staff interactions and inconsistent responsiveness during care tasks. Admissions and customer-service communication emerge as a clear operational weakness: families recount difficulty getting callbacks, dismissive interactions, pressure during the move-in process, and occasions of short-notice transitions without complete paperwork. These patterns suggest the need to clarify timelines, point-of-contact expectations, and documentation procedures before committing.

Financial and management concerns are another pattern to evaluate. The community is described as expensive both in entrance costs and monthly fees; some observers perceive the operation as sales- or revenue-driven rather than solely resident-centered. An allegation of staff misconduct involving theft was raised in the reviews; while this appears to be an isolated but serious complaint, it highlights the importance of asking about employee accountability measures, background checks, and financial safeguards.

Operational details worth addressing in a visit include housekeeping scope and conditions (there are reports of conditional or restrictive housekeeping practices), unit size and proximity to shared spaces (some apartments are described as smaller or located far from dining areas), and the status of outdoor landscaping or ongoing construction. Overall, the facility scores highly on physical environment, amenities, and activity programming, but prospective residents and families should conduct focused inquiries into dining consistency, admissions communication, housekeeping policies, staff responsiveness, and financial protections to ensure the community’s operational approach aligns with their expectations.

About Good Shepherd Village at Endwell

Good Shepherd Village at Endwell sits on 120 gentle acres, right by the Endwell Greens Golf Club, and has a range of housing, including luxury apartments, townhomes, and single-family cottages with features like gray siding, white porches, and American flags out front, all along paved roads that wind through the neighborhood, where you'll also find a clubhouse with great views and cozy outdoor spaces like covered porches and rear decks overlooking the hillsides. This place calls itself a fee-for-service continuing care retirement community-the first of its kind in New York-and you'll see that means there are lots of living choices for older adults, from independent living to assisted living, skilled nursing, adult day care, rehab, home health care, and memory care, all with a focus on keeping people as independent as possible while providing help when it's needed. Each home-whether you pick one of the 74 cottages or 80 apartment homes, or maybe a townhome-has different floor plans with names like The Turnberry, Inverness, Owasco, or Seneca, with one or two bedrooms, open living rooms, full kitchens, garages with storage, walk-in closets, laundry areas with washers and dryers, and plenty of natural light drifting in through the windows.

The community has a 32-bed skilled nursing center and a health center with 16 two-room assisted living suites, plus 16 special needs assisted living rooms, so people who need medical care can get it right where they live, and there's always staff available, and for those with memory care needs, there's a special dining program and a secure memory garden. Residents get meals in a flexible dining program, plus use of a fitness center, library, lounge, and scheduled entertainment activities, and they'll also have access to indoor pools with heated water and a pool lift for those who need help getting in, along with patios, hot tub/spa, barbecue areas, waterfront views, and a gated entry with doormen. Parking and garages are available, although the details about those aren't spelled out, but there are apartment floor plans ranging from 750 to 1250 square feet, and basics like air conditioning and cable come with the monthly fee, which also covers housekeeping every other week, trash and snow removal, and all maintenance inside and outside.

Good Shepherd follows clear apartment community and rental policies, allows pets, and offers both luxury and more affordable plans, with an affordable housing toolkit and disaster recovery resources available. It's got plenty of walking paths, gardens, gazebos, and rooms with big windows for natural light-plus special attention to being dementia-friendly and keeping everyone active with programs and scheduled rides to doctors' offices or shops. The community's overseen by a board of local volunteers and connects with Good Shepherd Communities, serving seniors since 1870 in Broome and Chenango Counties, and also provides help with wound care, short-term stays for rehab, and a secure environment for those who need more support. People of all backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ seniors, have equal rights in both housing and employment here, since the village is committed to following legal protections and New York State licensing rules, including being part of the Supplemental Security Income Program and certified by the state Department of Health.

Renters will find features like attached garages, extra storage, emergency call systems for safety, and basic utilities, high-speed internet, and cable included, and for those who want to stay independent as long as possible, there are handy amenities like in-unit laundry, fully equipped kitchens, and plenty of green spaces outside to enjoy. The cottages and apartment homes have covered porches or decks, some with views over the hills, and the community feels more like a small village, with friendly neighbors nearby, and a staff that's focused on keeping everyone as healthy and happy as possible, whether it's through transportation to local stores, access to a wellness center, or simply a place to watch the hills change through the seasons.
