    Excellent community with attentive staff

I moved my father to Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber and have been very pleased - the staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive, therapy and nursing care were excellent, the food and housekeeping are solid, and the clean, well-maintained new buildings and lovely apartments (with great downtown views and shuttle access) make daily life easy. The community is active and welcoming, with lots of activities, helpful maintenance and security, and warm neighbors - overall a very good choice I would recommend looking into.

    Summary of reviews

Ohio Living Westminster–Thurber presents as a large, full-service senior community with many attributes that appeal to prospective residents and families: a central downtown location, modern new buildings with well-appointed apartments and views, a broad continuum of care (independent living through memory care), on-site medical and hospice coordination, and a robust activities program. Reviewers frequently praise the community spirit, active resident committees, a wide array of cultural and educational offerings (OWLS, library deliveries, music and outings), and transportation/shuttle services that connect residents to local shopping, sports and arts venues.

Clinical services show a mixed but notable pattern. Therapy and rehabilitation services are commonly singled out for strong, effective care and successful outcomes; several accounts describe successful short-term rehab and safe discharges. Nursing and aide staff attract both strong positive and negative comments: many families describe compassionate, attentive caregivers and helpful nursing teams, while others describe inconsistent assistance, delays in response to calls, and concerns about adherence to individualized care plans. Staffing variability — including use of agency nurses and reports of high turnover — appears linked to the pattern of uneven service responsiveness and occasional lapses in post-operative or transfer-related care.

Dining and activities are strengths of the community overall. Multiple dining venues, social dining opportunities, frequent events, trips, and volunteer options are repeatedly noted as contributors to quality of life. That said, reviewers also describe episodic declines in food quality, presentation, and dining-area upkeep; these comments suggest variability rather than a uniform problem. The activities calendar and resident engagement are consistently highlighted as well-run and wide-ranging, from fitness and pool use to educational programming and outings.

Facility condition and amenities receive generally positive marks: modern towers (including Heritage Pointe), indoor pools, fitness spaces, gardens, covered passages between buildings, and dog-friendly areas are all cited as strong attributes. However, there are intermittent cleanliness and maintenance concerns in some common areas and guest restrooms, as well as observations that older portions of the campus need updating. Parking logistics and some layout/navigation issues in the larger complex were also noted.

Management and administrative themes are mixed. Admissions and some front-desk staff are described as welcoming and helpful, and a number of families praise specific staff members for effective communication and coordination. Contrastingly, other reviewers describe billing questions, opaque pricing around buy-in fees, breakdowns in discharge planning and insurance coordination, and limited responsiveness from supervisors on clinical or billing complaints. A subset of reviewers raised regulatory or grievance-level concerns and described individual incidents that led to formal complaints; these accounts underscore the importance of direct follow-up on clinical escalation procedures and grievance resolution.

Bottom line: Westminster–Thurber offers many of the amenities, clinical services, and social opportunities that prospective residents seek in a downtown, full-continuum community. Its therapy programs, active resident life, and modern new buildings are clear strengths. Prospective residents and families should balance those strengths against evidence of operational variability — particularly around staffing stability, responsiveness to call signals, discharge coordination, and occasional maintenance or dining inconsistencies — and should ask pointed questions during tours about staffing ratios, night-shift procedures, discharge protocols, billing and buy-in specifics, and the facility's process for addressing grievances and regulatory concerns.

    About Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber

Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber sits at 717 Neil Avenue in Columbus, offering a long list of care services and features for seniors, so you've got independent living apartments, assisted living, memory care, long-term care, skilled nursing, respite care, and even options for active adults, and they try to make it so you can stay as your needs change, which folks call aging in place, and this includes a memory care buy-in fee of $25,000, with memory care studios costing about $5,645 and one-bedrooms around $6,358 per month. They take care of people who need different levels of help, including folks who need transfers by one or two staff or mechanical lifts, standby help moving from bed to wheelchair, and care for people with bowel or bladder incontinence, plus they'll manage medications, help with diabetes, and provide other regular health services, but they say only some diabetes support includes insulin injections.

Seniors get 24-hour awake staff and help from registered nurses, occupational and physical therapy, speech therapy, hospice and palliative care, and they offer all kinds of medical attention for things like kidney or liver problems, wounds, behavioral health, transplant support, and more-they pack in a lot of specialty health care like dermatology, ophthalmology, psychiatric and dental care, and run clinics for wellness and screenings. If you want, there's help with housekeeping, laundry, dry cleaning, and daily trash removal, plus maintenance, all pretty routine, and utilities are all covered except the phone if you're in long-term care, so you don't have to worry about extras piling up. Residents can keep cats or dogs and there's help caring for pets if needed, so animal lovers aren't left out. There's scheduled and extra transportation available, and they've got parking for visitors and folks who still drive.

The place has private apartments, including studios, one, two, and three-bedroom options, with features like private balconies, walk-in showers, individual controls for heating and air, and some nice upgrades-some areas, like Thurber Tower, have colorful finishes and modern touches, while Heritage Pointe and Goodale Landing apartments offer things like sunrooms and custom layouts. The community's full of indoor common areas, sunrooms, gardens and rooftop spaces, a chapel with a full-time chaplain, a heated indoor pool with a lift, fitness center, library, computer resource center, general store, restaurant-style dining, woodworking shop, shuffleboard, spa, salon, and more for seniors who like to keep busy, and you'll find activities for Alzheimer's and dementia designed to keep folks engaged. They serve nutritious chef-prepared meals and snacks every day, and handle all kinds of dietary needs, and with emergency call systems and 24-hour security, safety is a big focus throughout the buildings.

Social, recreational, and spiritual programs fill the calendar, and outings and class programs-like exercise, art, health, gardening, and enrichment activities-draw people together and make it feel friendly and lively, and the place runs special research and academic programs too, sometimes even classes for weight management, childbirth, breastfeeding-covering a broad mix beyond what you'd think might be offered in a senior place. The memory care center offers a secure environment, individual care plans, and activities aimed at mental stimulation for residents with dementia, plus trained staff who specialize in this type of care. Funding options include private pay, Medicaid, Medicare, and veterans benefits, and the facility gets recognized for good care by groups like Best of Senior Living and the federal CMS five-star rating system for its skilled nursing and rehab.

Overall, the campus feels home-like, cozy, and safe, and the people working there have a reputation for being helpful and friendly, which most folks seem to appreciate and you've got options to fit whatever stage of life or care need you're in, with all the basics covered, a strong medical backbone, and a persistent focus on helping maintain each resident's independence and well-being as much as possible.
