    Clean facility attentive staff improved

I placed my mom here and have been very pleased - the recently remodeled, resort-like building is clean, close to home, and has a lovely courtyard/gazebo and outside seating. The staff and caregivers are warm and attentive (Courtney in admissions and Carrie in Social Services were especially helpful), doctors visit regularly, meals are plentiful with good choices, and there are engaging daily activities and outings. Overall a welcoming, well-organized place that has noticeably improved my loved one's social life and comfort; I recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviewers convey a generally positive view of Sarah A Todd Memorial Home, emphasizing compassionate clinical care, robust social programming, and a well-maintained, campus-style environment. Families frequently highlight individualized attention from nurses and aides, regular interdisciplinary care meetings, and frequent physician presence as contributors to a sense of clinical reliability and responsiveness. Admissions and social-services staff are commonly described as helpful and accommodating during placement and room changes.

Care and staff: The facility is characterized by hands-on, person-centered caregiving. Reviewers note that nursing and direct-care staff are attentive and treat residents with respect; several describe improved mood and activity levels after admission. The presence of an on-site physician and routine meetings involving social work, nursing, and activities staff support coordinated care planning and family communication. At the same time, staffing shortages are identified as an operational constraint that can affect routine schedules and responsiveness.

Dining and nutrition: Dining receives mixed-but-leaning-positive comments. The dining areas are described as cafeteria or restaurant-style with plentiful, well-planned meal choices and an appealing menu. However, families raise concerns about the appeal of texture-modified diets and variable palatability for residents with low appetite. These comments suggest the facility does well with standard offerings but could improve menu planning and presentation for residents who require modified textures or have diminished appetite.

Activities and social life: Activity programming is a clear strength. Daily group activities, exercise classes, religious study, outings to local restaurants and shopping, and recreational opportunities (including outdoor activities on campus and fishing trips) are noted as enhancing social engagement and quality of life. The campus layout—courtyard, gazebo, gardens and wildlife-viewing opportunities—supports outdoor and communal experiences that reviewers appreciate.

Facilities and environment: The physical environment is generally described as clean, orderly and recently updated in parts, with comfortable common areas, a chapel, and visitor-friendly lounges. Reviewers use terms such as "resort-like" to describe the grounds. Concerns include relatively small private-room footprints and active renovation work that can create temporary disruption.

Management and patterns to watch: Administrative responsiveness and approachable admissions/social-services staff are recurring positives. Notable operational patterns for prospective families include occasional staffing shortages, limitations in in-room visitation flexibility during infection-control periods, and the need for stronger menu solutions for texture-modified diets. These are areas where further inquiry during a tour or care-planning meeting would be prudent.

Bottom line: The facility appears to provide compassionate, well-coordinated care in a clean, activity-rich environment with strong social supports and onsite medical coverage. Prospective residents and families should weigh those strengths against practical considerations such as room size, current renovation activity, the facility's approach to modified-diet meal quality, and how staffing levels are managed on an ongoing basis.

About Sarah A Todd Memorial Home

Sarah A Todd Memorial Home sits in a peaceful rural spot at 1000 West South Street in Carlisle, PA, and for over seventy years has cared for seniors in the area, offering different levels of support as needs change, so you've got independent cottages and apartments for those who want to stay as self-sufficient as they can be, and then there's personal care, skilled nursing, and even a secured memory care unit for folks dealing with cognitive issues. The community was started by Carlisle families as a non-profit, works alongside the Todd Baird Lindsey Devlin Foundation, and is sponsored by United Church of Christ Homes, and their Lydia Baird Fund helps residents who need it. Seniors can take part in organized trips, lunch outings, and entertainment, plus there's all sorts of recreational and faith-based activities. The skilled nursing care unit has private dining, a lounge, an enclosed patio, and a little library with DVDs, and support ranges from physical, occupational, and speech therapy to short-term rehab stays, long-term chronic care, and even ostomy care, with a registered nurse there around the clock. Housekeeping, laundry, beauty salon, barbershop, and fitness centers are on site, alongside safety features like smoke detectors and security, and Wanderguard is available. The meals are served in community dining rooms with home-style entrees, plus options for special diets under a dietitian's watch. The place aims to let seniors keep living as independently as they're able, with help for medical, social, and psychological needs when it's necessary, and the staff works to make sure every person has a routine and dignity, with support that matches each person's own situation.
