    Happy resident, caring staff, activities

I live here and am very happy with my choice. The staff are kind, helpful and welcoming, and I've made friends quickly. Meals are excellent so I don't have to cook, and the activities director runs a wide variety of events and outings that keep me busy. My apartment is clean, safe, feels like home with a nice view, and the convenient location and responsive management make independent living easy.

    Summary of reviews

Holiday Essex House is presented across reviews as an independent-living community that emphasizes a hotel-like environment, social programming, and a family-style atmosphere. Many residents and families highlight consistently friendly and responsive employees, a broad schedule of activities (exercise classes, games, live music, themed events, and bus outings), and accessible amenities such as an on-site salon, podiatry visits, an on-site physical-therapy partner, weekly housekeeping, and a 24-hour snack/beverage station. Apartments vary from studios to multi-bedroom units; several include patios or balconies and are described as clean and comfortably furnished.

Care quality is framed primarily around independent living with supplemental clinical services available via third-party partners. The facility accommodates on-site PT/OT and visiting nursing/podiatry, but multiple accounts indicate personal-care needs (regular bathing assistance, medication management, showering help) typically require contracting with external caregivers. For prospective residents who need only light assistance or prefer private caregivers, this model can work well; it is less suitable for those who need ongoing assisted-living or nursing-level support managed directly by the community.

Staff receive substantial positive feedback for warmth, attentiveness, and efforts to create a family-like environment. Reviewers repeatedly note staff who know residents by name, active engagement by activities staff, and maintenance that responds promptly. At the same time, a pattern of staffing-related operational issues appears: turnover, uneven staff consistency, limited availability after early evening hours, and occasional concerns about responsiveness or communication tone. Families should clarify staffing patterns and after-hours coverage during a visit.

Dining and food service are prominent strengths and sources of concern. Many reviewers praise the dining room ambiance, variety, and the convenience of included meals; some note diabetic-friendly and gluten-free options and room-delivery services. Conversely, other reviewers describe inconsistent meal quality, mismatches between printed menus and served items, portion-size complaints, and limited accommodation for low-sodium or strict dietary needs. Pricing for meals is sometimes described as opaque, with extra monthly charges or delivery fees in certain cases; prospective residents should confirm what is included in rent and what is billed separately.

Facility condition and operations present a mixed picture. Common areas and dining spaces receive repeated praise for cleanliness and décor, but the building is described in places as older with occasional electrical or maintenance items. Practical constraints mentioned include limited laundry capacity in some configurations, elevator congestion, modest outdoor space, and soundproofing/privacy concerns in specific units. Security and exterior surveillance have been noted as potential vulnerabilities, particularly related to parking-area incidents; interior common areas are generally described as secure.

Management and administrative patterns deserve attention during a tour. Several reviewers compliment a proactive new manager and community responsiveness, while others cite billing discrepancies, contract changes, rent increases, and occasional lapses in communication about benefits (for example, VA eligibility or what services are included). The community appears to apply routine annual rent adjustments unless a rent-lock option is arranged; clarify contract terms, notice periods, and billing practices before committing.

Bottom line: Holiday Essex House is best suited to relatively independent seniors who value active programming, a social environment, and on-site amenities, and who are comfortable arranging personal-care or clinical services through external providers when needed. The community’s strengths are its staff culture, housekeeping and meals (for many residents), and robust activities. Important due diligence items for prospective residents and families include verifying after-hours staffing and access policies, clarifying what dining and ancillary services are included versus extra cost, confirming how dietary restrictions are handled, and reviewing contract, billing, and emergency-response procedures.

    About Holiday Essex House

Holiday Essex House sits in Lemoyne, PA, just ten minutes from Harrisburg and close to things like the Pennsylvania State Capitol, City Island, and the Pride of the Susquehanna riverboat, with bakeries, barbershops, hospitals, and local services nearby so residents find what they need pretty easily, and this is a multi-story, Craftsman-style building with welcoming exteriors, a covered entrance, balconies, and neatly kept grounds with flower beds, walking paths, benches, and a patio area where you'll see people walking their pets since they do allow cats and dogs. Folks can choose from studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom apartments, some newly renovated, with layouts that might have kitchenettes, walk-in showers or tubs, self-controlled heat and air, and living areas with natural light, while the apartments come fully furnished with queen-sized beds, nightstands, dressers, and cozy touches like recliners and couches for comfort, and some have private bathrooms with vanity sinks and decorative shelves.

Residents get chef-prepared meals three times a day in spacious dining rooms with wood floors and chandeliers, and there's a private dining room for special events, plus they offer a business center, barber and beauty salon, fitness equipment, a library, a bistro area, and a game room with a pool table and even a model train display, and if you're a fan of puzzles or board games, there's a lounge area and community fireplace for gathering with friends. Activities run all week, with both on-site social events and off-site trips to things like shopping or outings in the community, and they have a program called Engage Life®, set up for folks who want to keep up with social groups, hobbies, book clubs, and fitness classes, while outside there are gardens, walking trails, and outdoor cottages for enjoying fresh air.

The community supports many care options-assisted living for people who need some help with daily things like bathing, medication, or getting dressed, memory care services provided by Artis Senior Living of West Shore for those dealing with memory loss, skilled nursing and rehab with ProMedica, and independent living for those able to live on their own but wanting services like housekeeping and meals, and third-party providers handle support and medication management if extra medical help is needed. Essex House holds up to 161 residents and tries to meet differing needs by offering all-inclusive rents that cover most utilities-water, gas, electricity-plus housekeeping, linen service, and maintenance, and they have WiFi in common areas, a computer room for residents, devotional services, and guest parking for visitors.

For safety, Holiday Essex House puts in emergency response systems, Lively Mobile Plus Personal Emergency Response Devices, smoke alarms, sprinkler systems, safety rails, and has detailed emergency plans for various situations, and every resident has access to scheduled transportation for errands or appointments. The facility is set up for easy access with ground floor units and wide hallways, and the atmosphere is homelike and simple, with a sunlit atrium and plenty of sitting spots for reading, playing games, or meeting neighbors. Many events on the monthly calendar-from themed parties to art classes to fitness lessons-are meant to keep everyone engaged, and folks are free to arrange personal health services or take part in big community get-togethers, making room for both quiet time and activities.

Awarded the 2022 Best of Senior Living Award, Holiday Essex House is known for long-standing service and for helping residents keep their independence and dignity. The staff, including Manager Ryan Angie, make sure things stay running smoothly, meals are fresh and varied, and everyone can find a way to stay involved in whatever best suits their interests, whether through gardening, social groups, or simply relaxing by the TV.
