    Caring attentive staff, homey environment

I'm very pleased with this senior living community - caring, attentive staff who know residents by name, clean comfortable rooms (many with private baths), good food, and lively activities that really engage people. New leadership has improved communication and the place feels homey and well run; excellent value and heartfelt care, with just a few small things still being refined.

    Summary of reviews

The review set presents a polarized view of Highlands Senior Living Gaston. Many families describe a warm, home-like environment with attentive caregivers and active programming; others raise substantial concerns about cleanliness, pest control, staff coverage, and management follow-through. This yields a mixed reputation in which strong interpersonal care is frequently cited alongside operational and facility-level weaknesses.

Care and staff: Numerous comments highlight compassionate, resident-focused caregivers who learn residents' names, preferences, and engage in one-on-one time. Some reviewers praised nurses who managed complex medical needs and administrators who are present and approachable. Conversely, other reviewers described inconsistent staff presence, limited weekend coverage, and delays in responsiveness. There are repeated concerns about medication handling and the facility's response to clinical incidents, indicating variability in clinical protocols and follow-up communication to families.

Dining and activities: The facility appears to offer a broad set of social and recreational activities — music, sing-alongs, games, carnivals, hayrides and outings — and several families reported that residents became more active and socially engaged. At the same time, there are patterns of dissatisfaction with meal quality and nutrition consistency, including limited menu variety and difficulties honoring dietary restrictions. Memory-care programming is another area of divergence: some families report meaningful engagement for residents with dementia, while others note insufficient or poorly tailored activities for Alzheimer's-level care.

Facilities and sanitation: Reviews contrast an interior that is, in many cases, clean and comfortable with an exterior and some common areas that are perceived as rundown or dated. Specific operational concerns include sanitation and odor-control inconsistencies, missing basic supplies in some bathrooms, and recurring pest-control concerns. Accessibility issues were mentioned as well (narrow hallways, limited outdoor or exercise spaces), and reviewers cited outdated furniture and maintenance needs that affect resident comfort and safety.

Management and operational patterns: Several reviewers compliment hands-on leadership and recent improvements attributed to new management or an engaged director. At the same time, there are recurring reports of uneven oversight, supply-management problems, allegations of inadequate incident response, and perceptions that administrative priorities vary. These mixed accounts suggest recent leadership changes have produced improvements for some families but that systemic operational gaps remain in areas such as staffing reliability, cleanliness protocols, and pest control.

Notable patterns and considerations: The reviews cluster into two dominant themes — strong relational care and activity programming on one hand, and persistent operational problems (sanitation, pests, staffing, communication) on the other. Given this variation, prospective residents and families should confirm current conditions in person: review housekeeping and pest-control documentation, ask about staffing ratios and weekend coverage, review medication-administration policies and incident-reporting procedures, inspect memory-care programming and sample menus, and discuss recent regulatory or inspection history. The facility may offer a supportive environment for many residents, but the operational inconsistencies described suggest careful, targeted inquiry before placement.
