    Friendly staff, spotless home, thriving

I placed my loved one here and I'm very pleased - the staff are friendly, caring and professional (Tammy, Tina and team go out of their way). The building is spotless, beautifully maintained and feels like home; our spacious apartment with a kitchenette is great. Meals smell delicious, activities are engaging, and residents are social and thriving. Communication and move-in were smooth, and I feel confident my family member is well cared for.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression The Legacy of Orangeburg is consistently described as a welcoming, well-kept community with a strong emphasis on personable caregiving. Reviewers highlight an environment that feels home-like: clean common areas and apartments, attractive decor, and outdoor courtyard spaces that support socialization. Staff behavior is a dominant positive theme — described as friendly, compassionate, professional and attentive — and long-tenured personnel and visible leadership contribute to a sense of stability.

Care quality and staff Families and visitors frequently praise individualized attention, effective medication management, and a smooth, compassionate move-in process. Staff are noted for being available for questions, arranging meetings or virtual visits when needed, and for going beyond basic duties to assist families. These comments point to a culture of family communication and staff engagement. At the same time, there are operational concerns that prospective families should query directly: reviewers indicate limited skilled-nursing capability and lower staffing levels relative to some other facilities, which may affect care for residents with higher clinical needs.

Dining and daily living Dining is often cited positively — meals are described as appealing and aromatic, the dining room feels home-like, and there are regular social dining experiences. Programming around meals includes live music and communal dining events. However, there are mentions of uneven meal-service practices, including instances where meal assistance or monitoring for residents with cognitive impairment was not consistently provided. Prospective residents should ask about meal-assistance protocols and how the facility supports residents who require help with eating or monitoring during meals.

Activities and social life Activity programming appears robust and varied: bingo, exercises, crafts, shopping trips, church services, musicians, and other social opportunities are regularly offered. Reviewers describe active engagement and social interaction among residents, and staff involvement in coordinating events is highlighted as a strength.

Facilities and safety The physical plant is described as clean, attractive, and well-maintained, with spacious rooms and secure entry systems. Families note convenient location and pleasant common areas. Positive comments about sanitation and upkeep are frequent. Notable operational issues include privacy and logistics around resident transfers: the ambulance pickup location and related visibility were described as stressful for residents, indicating an area where traffic flow and privacy considerations might be optimized.

Management and notable patterns Leadership and frontline managers receive positive mention for being informative and responsive; examples include staff introductions, administrative engagement, and prompt family communications. Nevertheless, recurring patterns in reviewer feedback suggest two operational areas to investigate during a tour: infection-control practices and staffing/clinical capacity. Inconsistent PPE enforcement and ongoing virus presence were cited, and reviewers also expressed concern about limited skilled-care resources and staffing levels relative to other options.

What to ask on a tour Based on the pattern of comments, families should consider asking about staffing ratios (day/night), on-site clinical/skilled-nursing capabilities, infection-control protocols (including PPE policies and recent outbreak handling), meal-assistance and monitoring procedures for residents with cognitive or mobility impairments, ambulance/transfer logistics and privacy measures, and visitation policies during infection-control events.

Summary conclusion The Legacy of Orangeburg presents as a warm, well-maintained community with strong interpersonal care, active programming, and positive dining experiences. Operationally, prospective residents and families should confirm clinical capacity, staffing levels, infection-control consistency, and meal-assistance practices to ensure the community matches the resident’s clinical and privacy needs.

    About The Legacy of Orangeburg

The Legacy of Orangeburg gives seniors different options for living, including independent living, assisted living, and memory care, so people can have as much help as they need while still feeling at home, and the grounds feel nice with walking paths, a courtyard garden, and a swimming pool for relaxing or visiting with friends and family, which is helpful if someone likes to be outside. The apartments come in many choices, such as studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom layouts, and each place has safety features with a wireless emergency response system, private bathrooms, walk-in closets, and kitchenettes, so there's plenty of space for the things residents need and want, and they can enjoy privacy, but it's easy to get help from staff at any time if they're needed, which a lot of folks find comforting. For people who need help with memory, specially trained staff care for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, offering safe housing and activities that help residents rediscover skills, while the assisted living section supports with things like bathing, dressing, medication reminders, food, and companionship so folks can stay as independent as they're able. There are services for short-term stays, home care if needed, and also hospice support, and they've got a nurse on staff and a doctor on call, plus visits from dentists and podiatrists, so health concerns can get seen to right in the building, and physical, speech, and occupational therapy can happen in-house. Fitness and wellness are a focus, with a gym, daily exercise classes, Tai Chi, and a swimming pool, and pet-friendly policies mean some folks can bring their pets, though there are restrictions on dog sizes, which makes sense to keep things manageable for everyone. The activities calendar is full, with organized games, educational classes, outings, music, crafts, and card clubs, as well as worship and meditation areas, so there's company and help to be found every day if that's what a person wants, but staying in and enjoying the library, lounge, or a quiet meal in the dining room is always an option, since three meals a day are served with menus that can be changed for different diets and snacks are available too. Personal care plans mean each resident gets what they need, with laundry, housekeeping, maintenance, utilities, and Wi-Fi included in the rent, which runs month-to-month, and there are devotional services onsite or offsite for those who want them, plus salon and barber services, transportation to appointments, and resident parking, and the building and rooms are all accessible and there's 24-hour security. The team, managed by Five Star Senior Living, tries to create a welcoming community, working with families to keep everyone as comfortable and independent as possible, and the facility is well-kept, with friendly staff and a homey feeling, so everyone has a safe place to live, participate in activities, spend time with friends, or relax, without having to worry about the small things, and Medicaid is accepted, and they can help with Veterans Affairs Aid and Assistance if that's something needed. With 44 apartments, the community feels connected but doesn't get too crowded, and though places like the dining room and activity rooms are busy, there's always a spot to retreat for peace and quiet, which a lot of folks appreciate as their needs and routines change.
