    Caring staff, clean, excellent meals

I moved my loved one here and I'm very pleased - the staff are warm, genuinely caring and treat residents like family. The facility is clean and attractive, meals are excellent, and activities are lively and well run; on-site PT/OT, attentive management, and personalized service made the transition smooth. A few small improvements could be made, but I recommend touring.

    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment in these reviews is mixed but leans positive on the nonclinical aspects of Autumn Care Assisted Living while revealing serious concerns in one or more clinical/care-management situations. Reviewers frequently praise the facility’s warm, family-owned culture, the attentive and compassionate nature of many staff members, and the engaging lifestyle offerings. At the same time, a small number of reviews describe critical gaps in clinical responsiveness and management communication that materially affected a resident’s safety, leading to a short stay and a loss of trust.

Care quality and staffing: Multiple reviewers describe staff as competent, kind, and attentive, citing continuity of caregivers and genuine relationships that make residents feel cherished and at home. Assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing is highlighted as a strength. However, there are recurring notes about occasional understaffing and slower-than-expected hiring, which can strain services. One review details a significant clinical failure — medication (Xanax) allegedly not administered, resident agitation and confusion, and an unclear employment status for a nurse referenced as Becky — resulting in discharge after six days. That incident suggests the facility may not be fully equipped or organized to handle some higher-acuity or complex behavioral/medication situations and that communication around these issues can be deficient.

Facilities and accommodations: The facility appears to have recently expanded, with a new wing of about 20 suites and larger room options available. Overall physical accommodations are described as simple but home-like, focusing on essentials rather than luxury. The presence of an on-site beauty salon (Lou’s Beauty Salon) is a noted amenity that contributes to resident well-being and dignity. Reviewers recommend touring to see room sizes and layouts in person, which aligns with comments that accommodations are straightforward and practical.

Dining and activities: Dining is a consistently positive theme — reviewers report top-notch meals and flexibility around preferences. Activities are another highlight: live entertainment, Bingo, chorus participation, and encouragement to engage with the local senior center were mentioned. These offerings support social engagement and appear to be a strong point for residents who thrive on communal programming and outings.

Management and communication: The facility’s family-owned nature is mentioned positively, suggesting a personal investment in residents’ quality of life. However, management communication and responsiveness are areas of concern for some families. One reviewer reports a lack of response to a formal complaint and feels pushed toward hiring private 24/7 care or using insurance monies rather than receiving adequate on-site support. That interaction, combined with the medication administration issue, created a sense that the facility may deflect responsibility for higher-level care needs instead of addressing them directly.

Patterns and recommendations for prospective families: Taken together, the reviews paint Autumn Care as a warm, affordable assisted living option with strong social programming, good meals, and many caring staff members — well suited for residents with primarily social and basic assistance needs. The most important caveat is to confirm clinical capabilities and staffing reliability before committing: prospective families should tour the facility, meet nursing staff, ask directly about staffing ratios and turnover, clarify medication administration policies (including how psychotropic medications are handled), request the process for escalating behavioral or acute medical issues, and probe how the facility responds to complaints or incidents. If a prospective resident requires 24/7 clinical monitoring or complex medication management, families should verify whether the facility can meet those needs or whether supplemental private care will be necessary.

In summary, Autumn Care earns praise for its atmosphere, activities, dining, and many compassionate caregivers, but has documented weaknesses in clinical handling and communication that have had serious consequences for at least one family. A careful, informed tour and direct questions about clinical capability and incident response are strongly advised before making a placement decision.

    About Autumn Care of Karns

Autumn Care of Karns sits right in the heart of the Karns neighborhood in Knoxville, Tennessee, and really gives off a small town feel mixed with a family-friendly atmosphere, which a lot of folks seem to like, and there's this central location close to churches, healthcare, and community spots, plus there's the covered entryways and ample parking, so people don't have to worry about getting in and out when visiting. Residents have private rooms-studios and one-bedrooms with kitchenettes, walk-in showers, big windows for light, and lots of closet space-and everyone gets to furnish things in their own style, which makes it feel a bit more homelike, and the well-maintained lawns, stone retaining walls, and landscaping really stand out when you pull up. You see, the staff are around 24 hours a day, always ready to help with things like transfers, medication, bathing, or getting dressed, and everyone says the workers are wonderful, caring, and really do love and appreciate the people living there.

Meals are provided every day, and folks say the food's great, so nobody has to worry about cooking or cleaning up, and housekeeping and laundry are part of the package, making life simpler. The management team runs special programs for those with Alzheimer's or dementia, and memory care is offered in its own building, so people get care that's shaped just for them, especially with person-centered plans and regular surveys to make sure residents are happy-the 2019 survey says 92% were satisfied, and nearly everyone who's been there would recommend it. Autumn Care says they're pet friendly with a limit of two pets per resident, each under twenty pounds-so small dogs, cats, birds, maybe a hamster or gerbil are welcome, adding to that homey feel.

The community is active, delivering companionship and plenty of opportunities for social engagement-musical performances, Bible studies, game rooms, movie nights, library visits, and worship services, plus outdoor gardens, well-kept walking paths, and resident lounges-all designed to encourage movement and friendships. Amenities include a courtyard, beauty salon and barber shop with all the usual services for a fee, a fitness center, wellness room, spa, and sauna, though there's no pool or fancy extras, and there's regular transportation provided for errands and appointments. On the medical side, there's on-site services through Mission Mobile Medical Care for things like primary care, podiatry, wound care, and behavioral health needs, and staff can help with diabetic care, including insulin injections and sliding scales. All the units come with emergency call systems, private bathrooms, cable TV hookups, and internet, so people can stay connected and safe.

The owners and staff focus on excellence and respect and always keep an eye on making sure residents' preferences are heard and followed, and that's probably why people describe it as feeling like home-a close-knit, modern, and comfortable place. There are no details given about pool areas, air conditioning, rental costs, or things like barbecue patios, and there's not much said about outside community engagement, but people get a structured, secure, and simple setting right there in Karns where most daily chores and worries are managed by a caring team. If you want more details, you'd have to check autumncareassistedliving.com since the facility keeps some things general, but most people living there seem pleased with what's provided, and families often recommend it.
