    Small, clean, compassionate assisted living

I toured and moved my mom into the Courtyards and have been very pleased. It's a small, home-like community - clean, quiet, with open kitchens, hardwood floors and plenty of activities; rooms are a good size and easy to get around. Staff, especially Tonya and Michelle, are caring, patient and available around the clock, helped with the transition and encouraged my mom to eat; communication is strong and they respond quickly. The food is good and overall it's a well-kept, compassionate place I'd recommend.

    Summary of reviews

The Courtyards Senior Living elicits a broadly mixed but actionable picture for prospective residents and families. Many reviewers praise the human side of the community: staff members, including named administrators and nurses, are often described as compassionate, helpful during transitions, and available for questions. Several families highlighted effective move-in support, good communication from leadership, and staff who facilitate social integration for new residents. The community’s physical environment also receives positive attention — a home-like layout with open kitchens, comfortable common areas, hardwood floors, attractive grounds, and adequate private-room sizes that make navigation easy.

Care quality descriptions are variable. Positive accounts describe attentive, calming staff interactions, successful transitions from higher-dependence settings, on-site therapy coordination, and dementia-care availability that supports residents with cognitive needs. Conversely, other accounts point to operational weaknesses that affect day-to-day care: inconsistent staffing levels and frequent personnel changes appear to create variability in service delivery, and some families reported delays or gaps in personal-care routines and meal assistance. There are also concerns about how safety incidents are handled and communicated, including instances that reviewers characterized as lapses in incident response or follow-up.

Dining and activities are generally seen as strengths, with a central dining room adjacent to activity spaces, regular programming, and meal portions that many residents enjoy. However, opinions on food quality and assistance at mealtimes are not uniform; some families reported inconsistent meal service and a lack of hands-on assistance when needed. The facility’s design supports social engagement, and reviewers commonly noted an active schedule of events and therapies.

Facility management and operations show mixed signals. While some families appreciate responsive administrators and named staff who facilitate financial and logistical matters, others cited frequent management changes, unexpected fee increases tied to care level, and variability in staff professionalism and tone. More serious operational concerns include sanitation and pest-control issues in limited instances, as well as allegations of missing personal items — matters that warrant direct inquiry during a tour. Accessibility for residents who are deaf or hard of hearing is another area with reported shortcomings.

For families considering The Courtyards, suggested areas to verify on a visit include current staffing patterns and turnover, written procedures for incident reporting and family communication, personal-item security measures, pest-control and sanitation protocols, availability of hands-on meal assistance, and specific supports for hearing-impaired residents. Overall, the community offers many features that families value — supportive staff, dementia care, attractive facilities, and social programming — but prospective residents should evaluate operational consistency and specific quality-control practices to ensure a good fit with individual care needs.

    About The Courtyards Senior Living

The Courtyards Senior Living sits in quiet neighborhoods like Fountain City in Knoxville, Briarcliff Avenue and Emory Valley Road in Oak Ridge, and has homes in Johnson City too, and it offers small homes with only 18 to 25 rooms each, so you don't feel lost in a crowd, and families know that means more personal care, and each building handles either Assisted Living or Memory Care, so needs don't get mixed up, and folks like that there are private outdoor spaces, porches, gardens, and patios where you can sit, enjoy fresh air, maybe have a chat with a friend or birdwatch. The place keeps things easy for seniors with things like walk-in showers with grab bars, wooden gazebos, elevators, and pets around, and rooms have Wi-Fi and handy furniture, and there's a piano and comfy common areas with fireplaces and built-in bookshelves, so there's always a spot to read a book or join a group for games or music, and they keep the meals nutritious and tasty, with dining areas full of round tables, wooden chairs, and even floral centerpieces, giving it a homey feeling while you look outside at the grounds. The Courtyards split their Assisted Living, Assisted Living Plus, and Memory Care into separate spaces with buildings in each location, and memory care sections like The Lantern at Morning Pointe Alzheimer's Center of Excellence have clear layouts to help residents with confusion, making it easier to move around safely, and trained staff stay on every hour of the day keeping an eye on needs, helping with medicine, housework, meals, bathing, dressing, and even laundry, and there's always someone to ask for help or just have a talk. They have a concierge, transportation when you need to go out, and a beautician who comes in, and if you want spiritual support or to attend activities in town, they'll help with that, and there's a strong focus on keeping life engaging through onsite gardening, games, group activities, and offsite trips so folks stay social, active, and happy. Residents have different needs, so care gets tailored, whether that's medication help, counseling, respite stays for a few days, or care for those who need support with memory or regular tasks, and the small community setup lets staff get to know each resident, helping everyone feel like they belong, and with awards for kindness and care, and a culture focused on dignity, respect, and happiness, the Courtyards have built a reputation for being both reliable and welcoming, aiming to give each resident a real home atmosphere in an elegant but friendly setting.
