    Bright renovated community attentive staff

I toured and placed a loved one here and was pleased overall - the newly renovated, spotless community is bright and welcoming with roomy apartments. Staff (especially Mackenzie and the front desk) are polite, attentive and highly engaged; activities, amenities and communication are excellent, so I'd recommend it as a solid choice for families.

    Summary of reviews

Commonwealth Senior Living at the Devonshire elicits a mix of strong positive impressions and operational concerns. Many reviewers praise the direct-care teams as compassionate, attentive, and familiar with residents by name; families frequently highlight helpful admissions staff and tour guides who provide clear move-in assistance. The community presents as clean and newly renovated in many areas, with a home-like atmosphere, active social life, and a broad set of amenities (salon, library, chapel, gym, arts room, laundry on each floor, and a variety of communal spaces). Several reviewers note the benefit of on-site nursing and help with memory-care transition planning.

Care quality shows two distinct patterns. Positive accounts emphasize respectful, personalized care and strong family communication; on-staff nurses and 24/7 availability are seen as strengths. At the same time, a number of reviewers describe operational weaknesses around medication management (coordination, ordering, access, and billing), inconsistent response times to call bells, and uneven follow-through on individualized care plans. These concerns point to system-level gaps in clinical coordination and staffing continuity rather than uniform clinical failure.

Dining and activities are commonly cited as community highlights, with a dedicated chef, sit-down dining, regular activity calendars, and frequent outings (museums, restaurants, shopping). Exercise classes, music, live entertainment, and recurring programs such as bingo and arts activities contribute to resident engagement. However, reviewers also report variability in food quality, portion sizes, weekend options, and access to seconds; some families requested more targeted programming for residents with cognitive impairment or higher-acuity needs.

The physical plant and amenities are generally viewed positively — roomy, well-lit apartments, many with full kitchens, and functional common areas. Reviewers also report strong housekeeping and maintenance when functioning well. Counterbalancing this, there are recurring mentions of maintenance-response delays (plumbing repairs, broken fixtures), accessibility limitations in certain unit layouts (sinks and bathroom clearances), and localized sanitation or pest-control concerns. These items suggest uneven execution of routine building upkeep.

Management and operational oversight draw mixed evaluations. Admissions, tour, and front-desk staff often receive praise for responsiveness and support, while some reviewers describe difficulties with management follow-through, unresolved maintenance items, staffing turnover, and clarity around pricing and medication billing. Transportation is available for many activities and some medical appointments, but reviewers noted limits for offsite doctor visits and constrained parking and outdoor space.

Notable patterns for prospective residents and families: there is a strong community culture and many operational strengths in programming and amenities, but also persistent, service-level gaps in medication processes, call-response times, maintenance follow-through, and pest-control in some areas. Before committing, families should ask targeted questions about medication administration and pharmacy procedures, average call-button response times, staffing levels and turnover, pest-control protocols, maintenance response SLAs, accessibility of specific apartment floor plans, transportation policies for medical visits, and detailed billing practices. Regularly scheduled follow-up after move-in and clear documentation of promised changes are advisable to ensure expectations are met.
