    Compassionate professional care and recovery

I placed my mother here and I'm very grateful - the caregivers, CNAs, rehab and medical staff are compassionate, professional, and genuinely motivating. She was treated like family, got personalized, patient-centered care, fast nurse-call response, and strong physical therapy that led to a positive recovery. The food is good and leadership under CEO Robert McClintic clearly emphasizes high-quality, above-and-beyond care. I highly recommend this gem.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews present a mixed but coherent picture of care at Kissito Post Acute - The Brian Center Alleghany. Strengths center on direct resident care and rehabilitation services: reviewers repeatedly cite compassionate, resident-centered caregivers, attentive CNAs, and therapists who provide motivating, effective therapy. Several accounts describe positive clinical and recovery outcomes and note that residents are comfortable in their accommodations. Dining is generally viewed favorably, with acceptable quality and variety; a few comments reference preferences about specific menu items. Executive visibility and some examples of engaged leadership are also mentioned as positive aspects of the environment.

Operationally, the facility appears to struggle with staffing and consistency. A recurrent theme is understaffing that contributes to delays in responding to call bells and to uneven coverage overnight and on weekends. These staffing pressures are said to affect morale and appear linked to management decisions around staffing levels. Related complaints include poor phone responsiveness, incomplete meal trays or missing items, and variability in how staff communicate with families and residents. A small number of accounts raise concerns about clinical oversight, including delayed identification or escalation of clinical issues.

Care culture is described as highly positive by many families—terms like compassionate, personalized, and family-like recur—while others describe strained interactions and tone from some staff members. This polarity suggests an uneven experience across units, shifts, or individual staff. Rehabilitation services receive consistent praise, and caregivers are often singled out for going above and beyond, which is an important positive for prospective residents needing post-acute or therapy-focused stays.

For prospective residents and families, the pattern suggests confirming operational details during a tour and intake conversation: ask about current staffing ratios, typical call-bell response times (including night/weekend averages), nurse coverage on off shifts, meal-service procedures to prevent missing items, and escalation pathways for clinical concerns. Inquire about staff turnover and retention strategies, and request examples of how management addresses family concerns and staff accountability. Those prioritizing strong rehabilitation and personalized caregiving may find the facility well suited; those for whom consistent night/weekend responsiveness and tightly managed clinical oversight are critical should seek specific assurances before placement.

The staff includes physicians, nurse practitioners, licensed nurses, and therapists who all work together to create personalized care plans, and folks get 24-hour supervision with a call system for safety, especially for people with memory challenges like Alzheimer's or dementia. The center is set up for post-acute patients, people recovering from surgery or hospital stays, and those who need nursing care, help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, or transferring, and medication management.

The facility puts focus on both medical and personal needs, which means wound care, help with transfers, IV therapy, and support for people who use ventilators or have tracheostomy needs. Therapy teams can support physical, occupational, and speech therapy both as inpatient and outpatient for those recovering from things like joint replacement, stroke, or COVID, and they also provide cardiac care, respiratory or pulmonary rehabilitation, post-surgery transitional care, diabetes management, and comfort or respite care as needed. The Brian Center Alleghany has safety plans set up for folks with memory or cognitive problems and trains staff to use patience and focus on comfort. Residents can enjoy access to a community garden, engaging group activities, and outings, and there's a strong emphasis on creating a supportive environment for everyone's medical, social, and spiritual needs, aiming to help each person stay as independent as possible.
