    Caring staff, spacious apartments, activities

I moved in recently and have been very pleased. The staff are warm, attentive and truly care - maintenance and housekeeping are quick and helpful. My roomy two-bedroom apartment (full kitchen, washer/dryer, patio) and the beautiful grounds, garden and large balconies make it feel like home. Food is very good with daily dinner and alternatives, meals delivered when needed, and reliable transportation to doctors/shopping plus frequent outings and activities (pool/water aerobics, crafts, knitting, computer classes). Affordable nonprofit with lots to do and great value - I'd happily recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

Holman Gardens presents as an affordable, nonprofit retirement community that many residents and visitors describe as offering strong value for the price. Unit sizes and layouts are a consistent strength: two‑bedroom apartments of roughly 1,200 square feet, on‑site parking/carports, and patios or large balconies attract people looking for independent living with space. The community offers a broad set of shared amenities — an indoor warm pool with jets, water aerobics, exercise and crafts rooms, a library, and garden plots — that support active lifestyles.

Staff and operations receive consistently positive comments. Reviewers frequently highlight accommodating, kind, and long‑tenured staff; prompt maintenance responses; assistance with moving and apartment setup; and an overall welcoming atmosphere. Housekeeping and meal delivery services are available, and transportation to medical appointments and scheduled outings is a routine part of the service mix. Residents note that the maintenance team will assist with small in‑unit tasks like hanging pictures and setting up TVs, which contributes to a smooth move‑in experience.

Dining and activities are notable program areas. The food quality is generally praised and specific servers are singled out for good service, but reviewers also point to limited meal frequency and menu variety — in practice that has meant a single main meal on some days or a constrained selection. The activity calendar is robust and varied, with exercise classes, movie nights, knitting and craft groups, computer classes, occasional massages, and bus trips; pandemic restrictions temporarily reduced offerings but outings and programs are restarting.

Facility condition is mixed in the feedback. Grounds, common areas, and landscaping are often described as attractive and well cared for, but multiple comments identify interior areas that show their age — older carpeting, dated paint, and an overall 1980s aesthetic in portions of the building. Some in‑unit appliances such as washers and dryers are described as older though functional. Cleanliness assessments vary: many note a clean facility, while others point to inconsistent standards in some common areas. Noise between units has been raised as an occasional operational issue, though staff intervention is also described.

Management and transparency are other patterns to note. The community’s nonprofit, value‑oriented positioning and inclusion of certain services in base pricing are frequently mentioned as strengths, but a few comments indicate that pricing inclusions and additional fee structures could be clearer to prospective residents. Availability is also a practical consideration — the community can be at capacity, and interested parties may encounter a waitlist.

Overall, Holman Gardens appears to deliver strong staff engagement, useful amenities, and good value for independent living residents who prioritize social programming and accessible services. Prospective residents and families should weigh the community’s affordability and activity offerings against the need for some cosmetic updates, potential variability in cleanliness impressions, limited meal variety, and possible waiting lists when making a decision.

    About Holman Gardens Retirement

Holman Gardens Retirement sits in Spokane Valley, WA, in the Millwood area. The place offers a range of living options including independent living, co-dependent living, assisted living, and memory care like Alzheimer's care. There's also hospice, onsite homecare, and respite care when someone needs short-term support. Apartments come in one- and two-bedroom sizes, with balconies or patios, and baths have tubs and wheelchair-accessible showers to make moving about easier. The rooms are meant to be big enough for comfort, and the community keeps a no-smoking policy indoors. The facility's friendly staff help residents and provide both support and information, and there's a resident service coordinator for any needs that pop up.

Holman Gardens has indoor spaces like a library, computer center, beauty salon, and indoor swimming pool, and outside there's shuffleboard, walking tracks, and safe common areas for sitting or socializing under the sun. Meals are served in a restaurant-style dining area and cover regular and vegetarian diets, and there's help for those who need it with eating or taking medicine. Pets are allowed, and there's special attention to creating a home-like feeling where everyone can express themselves. The staff are trained in aging services, with programs like Elevate assisted living training, and they work with groups that focus on advocacy and education for elder care.

Social, recreational, and religious activities run all week, from Bible studies, movies, card games, and bingo to crafts and arranged offsite outings. The staff coordinate both planned and on-demand transportation for residents to get to shopping, church, or other spots in the city, and there's parking for those with their own cars. Holman Gardens also helps by giving information on other nearby assisted living communities if someone's needs change. Health services include nurses onsite, physical, occupational, and speech therapy, doctors and nurses on call, and even a podiatrist who visits the community. There is always wheelchair access, friendly help when needed, and a memory care section for those who require more support.

Amenities like outdoor and indoor common areas, hot tubs, a beautician on site, and devotionals both onsite and offsite help keep life varied and rich. Reviewers give Holman Gardens an average rating of 3.8 stars from four reviews. The community is linked with the Senior Homes Foundation and offers programs in adult day resources, workforce development, aging services education, and scholarships. Tours can be scheduled for anyone interested in learning more, and the facility welcomes both men and women but keeps specific resident groups as part of its policy. The environment aims for safety, comfort, and a strong sense of home, all in Spokane Valley.
