    Warm, compassionate staff; inconsistent care

I appreciate the warm, caring staff, attractive, cozy facility, tasty healthy meals and regular entertainment - it truly feels like a home and gives me peace of mind. My main concerns are ongoing staffing shortages, high turnover and spotty management/communication that have led to occasional lapses in housekeeping and personal care (missed baths, small rooms, no RN on nights/weekends). Overall I recommend it for the compassionate team and atmosphere, but expect uneven service until staffing and management improve.

    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Brookview Assisted Living is mixed and polarized. Many reviewers emphasize the facilityโ€™s strengths: compassionate, warm staff who create a home-like environment; attractive, cozy common areas (fireplaces, grand pianos, comfortable sitting rooms); and meals and snacks that residents enjoy. Several families report proactive communication from staff, helpful nurses, and the presence of activities and live entertainment that provide engagement and peace of mind. Multiple testimonials specifically praise individual staff members and describe Brookview as the best available care in the area, often recommending it and citing good value for money and attentive dietary accommodations.

At the same time, a large and repeated set of complaints points to serious operational and care-delivery problems. Many reviewers describe poor management practices, broken promises, and an owner who is frequently unavailable. Chronic understaffing, high turnover, and insufficient training are recurrent themes; these staffing problems are linked to missed basic care tasks such as bathing, oral care, toileting assistance, and timely transfers that sometimes require two-person assistance but are reportedly not provided. Several reviews explicitly state there is no RN on site at certain times (weekends or nights), which heightens family concerns about medical oversight. These clinical and caregiving lapses are among the most significant safety and quality concerns raised.

There is notable inconsistency in descriptions of the facilityโ€™s physical condition and housekeeping. Some reviewers describe Brookview as immaculately clean, attractively decorated, and well cared for, while others report filthy bathrooms, unclean bedding, unemptied trash, and windows/lightbulbs not maintained. This contradiction suggests variability over time, between different wings or shifts, or uneven execution of housekeeping and maintenance protocols. Maintenance issues are also called out: reports of hot water outages lasting weeks, delayed heating, cold/drafty rooms, and other repair needs indicate building infrastructure problems that affect resident comfort.

Activities and social engagement are another divided area. Several families and reviewers praise daily activities, monthly entertainment, and social spaces that encourage interaction. Conversely, a number of reviews say activities are on hold, residents are left sitting in front of the TV, or there is little staff engagementโ€”sometimes linked to COVID lockdowns but also described as an ongoing problem. Transportation and outings are sometimes absent, reducing opportunities for residents to leave campus. These mixed reports point to an uneven activities program and possibly staffing- or scheduling-related limitations that affect resident engagement.

Dining receives generally positive mentions for meals that many residents love and for accommodation of dietary needs, though a few reviewers note a decline in food quality. Clinical and personal-item issues also appear: lost personal items and equipment (for example, a lost nebulizer) and inconsistencies in medication/clinical oversight were reported by some families. Taken together with the concerns about RN coverage and neglected personal care, these reports raise red flags about consistency and reliability of basic care services.

In summary, Brookview appears to offer a potentially strong, compassionate environment with appealing common spaces, caring staff, and positive dining and entertainment experiences for some residents. However, multiple independent reviews raise consistent and serious concerns about management, staffing levels, staff training, clinical oversight, personal hygiene practices, housekeeping consistency, and maintenance. The pattern of both glowing and critical reviews suggests substantial variability in resident experienceโ€”likely influenced by staffing levels, leadership responsiveness, and possibly temporal changes (such as during COVID or staffing crises). Prospective residents and families should consider visiting multiple times and at different times of day, asking direct questions about staff-to-resident ratios, RN coverage and on-call arrangements, staff turnover rates and training programs, documented activity schedules, housekeeping protocols, recent inspection reports, and how the facility addresses lost items and maintenance problems. Verifying recent references from current families and reviewing the most recent regulatory inspection findings will help determine whether the positive aspects noted by many families consistently outweigh the operational concerns raised by others.

    About Brookview Assisted Living

Brookview Assisted Living sits inside Oshkosh, WI, offering a comfortable place for seniors who need daily help, built with things to make life safer and easier, because they have studio rooms, wide walkways, and quick access to staff, with a total of 25 beds so the place doesn't get too crowded and everyone can get the attention they should. The management at Brookview Assisted Living includes a licensed practical nurse (LPN) on-site, who helps guide a team of caregivers following set rules for staff-to-resident ratios, and all of them focus on personalized care to match what each resident needs, either for regular assisted living or for more specialized memory care, especially if a resident faces memory problems or dementia since they've set up specific programs and spaces to reduce confusion and keep people from wandering off.

The services at Brookview Assisted Living cover everything from medication management, diabetes support, and incontinence care, to help with moving around if someone's non-ambulatory, and even companion care, meaning residents get someone to help with daily things like bathing and getting dressed. The community has special features, like an on-site lab for quick tests, beautician services, group activities, exercise classes, musical concerts, and reminiscence programs that help keep everyone active, comfortable, and engaged. They run a range of dining programs, serving well-made meals prepared with quality ingredients, and for anyone staying short-term, maybe because their caregiver needs a break, they offer respite care as well.

People have access to areas set aside for social events, and there are wooded walking trails along Sawyer Creek where residents can enjoy a bit of nature right outside their doors. Brookview Assisted Living's memory care services stay focused on seniors with Alzheimer's or other memory issues, set up in a way that's both supportive and safe, and their environment's been made dementia-friendly on purpose, using things like structured routines and clear signs to help keep everyone comfortable. As a locally owned and operated community, the staff try to give residents the right mix of independence and support in a medium-sized place that puts comfort, safety, and respect first, and they follow all needed health and safety rules, get regular inspections, and keep their state license current. Brookview Assisted Living is one of several senior living resources in the area-with related properties like Arborview Manor, Azura Memory Care, Bella Vista, Brookdale Oshkosh, and Westbrooke Manor Assisted Living and Memory Care-all with their own number of units serving Winnebago County, but Brookview stands out for its small size, attention to care, and setting right in the city limits with nature close by.
