    Updated Spacious Apartments, Caring Staff

I moved here from the hospital and love the updated, spacious 1-2 bedroom apartments with balconies that feel like my own condo. The staff are warm, attentive and part of our family - on-site nursing, weekly nurse visits and 24/7 on-call support give me real peace of mind. The food is very good (meals three times daily, made-to-order breakfasts), activities are plentiful (theater, outings, puzzles, weekly BYO cocktails, games by the fire), and there are great common spaces-patios, salon, lobby with a double fireplace and a lower-level bar. It's convenient, affordable, sociable and welcoming; I feel safe, well cared for, and glad I chose this community.

    Summary of reviews

Northland Lodge presents as a well-equipped, converted hospital-style assisted living community with a broad range of amenities and a generally home-like environment. The physical plant includes updated one- and two-bedroom apartments (many with balconies), multiple social spaces such as a theater room and a large lobby with a fireplace, outdoor patios, an on-site beauty salon and general store, and recreational options including a lower-level bar and pool table. Families commonly cite the facility’s affordability, spacious apartment layouts, and the option to prepare food in-room as notable positives.

Activity programming and resident life are strengths: reviewers describe a varied activities calendar, regular outings (medical transportation, grocery and casino trips), religious services, and communal features that support a social atmosphere (puzzles, games, snacks available round-the-clock). The site also has attached nursing and rehabilitation resources, which can benefit residents who need transitions from hospital to apartment living. Several accounts highlight kind, attentive CNAs and caregiving staff, an overall welcoming tone, and 24/7 on-call clinical availability.

Despite these positives, patterns in the reviews indicate operational shortcomings. Nursing coverage and clinical oversight appear inconsistent for residents with higher care needs — nurse visits are limited and families noted that staffing levels do not always meet acuity demands. Understaffing and lapses in staff communication or coordination with families are recurring themes; these operational gaps are reported to affect timeliness of assistance and day-to-day follow-through. Food service receives mixed assessments: some families praise the dining and special breakfasts, while others describe unacceptable meals or concerns about meal-related safety and consistency.

Management and execution also show variability. Reviewers contrast the facility’s strong physical amenities with occasional management and staffing issues that make the resident experience inconsistent. Smoking accommodations are present but described as restrictive or inconsistently administered, which may be relevant for residents who smoke. Overall, the facility appears to offer a high level of social programming, attractive living spaces, and supportive services for many residents, but prospective residents and families should confirm current staffing ratios, clinical coverage schedules, and meal-safety protocols to ensure alignment with individual care needs.

    About Northland Lodge Assisted Living

Northland Lodge Assisted Living sits at 1515 Memorial Drive in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, right on the shores of Lake Michigan, and inside, people will find a historic building that used to be the Two Rivers Community Hospital back when it was built in 1927, which now serves seniors from all walks of life including veterans and nurses. Folks there can pick from studios, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom private apartments, many with balconies and washer/dryer units, and some apartments even have kitchenettes for those who want them. The place covers lots of daily needs with weekly housekeeping, laundry, linen service, maintenance, and package delivery, and if a person needs some help getting around or heading out to doctors' appointments, there's dedicated staff and courtesy van transportation ready to assist, which is handy especially for those in assisted living or memory care.

Residents here can join in on many activities like Wii-bowling, bingo, exercise classes, local outings, movie nights at the in-house theater, or just unwind in the gardens, chapel, or the activity room, and there's always something going on with a pub and coffeehouse, a hair salon, workout space, walking trails, and even community-sponsored day trips. This community brings together people who want to live independently but enjoy the comforts of a safe setting, as well as those needing some extra help with things like medication, personal care, or memory care, and they tailor assistance to fit each person's needs, from independent living all the way to round-the-clock professional help for folks with Alzheimer's or dementia. Meals are a big part of life there, with chefs preparing organic food and offering restaurant-style dining, a continental breakfast, and even room service if someone wants to eat in their own place instead of the dining room.

The place is pet-friendly and carries a warm, cozy feeling, with emergency call systems and safe, wide spaces made to help people with mobility issues get around more easily. Internet, cable TV, Wi-Fi, central air, private mailboxes, and storage units add comfort and convenience, and there are safety extras like emergency call pendants for peace of mind. People who like to stay busy or want to keep active can join fitness and wellness programs, on-site physical therapy, community events, cultural activities, or use the library to relax with a good book. Everyone gets the benefit of a welcoming environment where caregivers aim to build trust, provide support, and treat residents like family. Northland Lodge is open every day, all year long, has three tiers of care for independent living, assisted living, and memory care, and works hard to stay connected to the community's long history, offering a sense of safety and belonging while meeting just about any need a senior might have.
