    Compassionate staff and excellent amenities

I placed my mother here and I'm very pleased. The staff are incredibly caring and treat residents like royalty - compassionate, respectful, and informative - and they run a wide range of stimulating activities (crafts, games, aerobics/yoga, movies and outings). The home feels welcoming and well-appointed: bright, sunny rooms, spacious community areas, a private yard with walking paths, pleasant dining with healthy options, clean units, convenient transit/hospital access, and nicely maintained grounds.

    Summary of reviews

Overall sentiment: Reviews for Highland House are overwhelmingly positive, with consistent emphasis on high-quality, compassionate caregiving and a well-maintained, home-like environment. Multiple reviewers highlight that residents appear happy and well cared for, and the facility is repeatedly described as small but expertly operated โ€” a combination that reviewers associate with personalized attention and a welcoming atmosphere.

Care and staff: The strongest and most frequent theme is praise for the staff. Reviews call the caregivers extremely caring, compassionate, and attentive, with several personal anecdotes describing residents (or family members) being treated like royalty or receiving "queen-like" treatment. Staff behavior is described as informative, respectful, and communicative with residents. The consensus is that the caregiving team is a core strength of Highland House and a primary driver of resident satisfaction.

Facilities and environment: Reviewers consistently note attractive, well-maintained physical spaces. Grounds are described as nicely maintained and include a private yard and walking area with places to sit and rest. Indoors, there is a bright, fresh foyer, well-appointed rooms with natural light, spacious and comfortable community rooms, and a beautiful lounge. Units are reported clean and updated (new carpet and fresh paint). The presence of birds and fish both inside and outside contributes to a pleasant, home-like atmosphere. The facilityโ€™s small scale is framed positively โ€” reviewers feel it contributes to a welcoming, real-home feel rather than an institutional one.

Activities and amenities: Highland House offers a varied, stimulating activities program. Reviewers mention crafts, games, movies, aerobics and yoga classes, and organized outings to local eateries and cultural centers. The outdoor spaces are used for social functions like picnics and parties. These descriptions indicate an active, socially engaging lifestyle that supports physical, cognitive, and social wellbeing for residents.

Dining: Dining areas are described as nice and spacious, and reviewers note healthy menu options and snacks are available, with food that looks appetizing. At the same time, one review explicitly states "no current food service," which conflicts with other comments about dining amenities. This discrepancy is notable and should be clarified by prospective residents or family members โ€” either food service availability varies by unit/resident arrangement, or there has been a recent operational change affecting meal service.

Location, affordability, and operations: Reviewers mention practical positives such as affordable housing, easy transit access, and a convenient location across from a hospital โ€” factors that add to Highland Houseโ€™s appeal for families concerned about access to medical care and community resources. The operation is described as expertly run; staff are portrayed as respectful and informative, reinforcing impressions of competent management.

Notable patterns and concerns: The dominant pattern is high satisfaction with staff and the homelike environment. The only explicit concern appearing in the summaries is the "no current food service" note, which conflicts with other reports of appealing dining areas and healthy menus. Given the otherwise consistent praise, this stands out as an operational detail to verify. There are no recurring complaints about cleanliness, safety, or care quality in the provided summaries.

Recommendation and next steps: Based on these reviews, Highland House appears to be a strong choice for someone seeking a smaller, attentive, and home-like senior living environment with active programming and compassionate staff. Prospective residents or family members should: (1) confirm the current status of meal services and how dining is handled for new or existing residents, (2) ask about levels of care available (to ensure ambulation and medical needs are met), and (3) tour the grounds, common areas, and a sample unit to verify that the described updates (carpet, paint, bright rooms) and outdoor amenities meet expectations. Overall, the reviews portray Highland House as a caring, neatly run facility with a warm atmosphere and robust activity offerings, with a single operational item (food service) worth clarifying before committing.

    About Highland House

Highland House is a senior community that offers several kinds of care, including assisted living, independent living, memory care, and retirement home services, and you'll find there are places in Watertown and Waterloo, with each spot set up a little differently because Highland House in Watertown has private rooms with living quarters and a half-bath, while the Waterloo site gives you private rooms with living spaces, a kitchenette with appliances, and a full bathroom with a shower. The facility offers rooms that are studio, one-bedroom, semi-private, or two-bedroom, so people can pick what fits them, and there's furniture you're allowed to use at no extra cost, which helps when moving in and settling down. Staff at Highland House can help you move between a bed and wheelchair if you need it, and they're there 24 hours a day to help if something comes up, and a registered nurse works with everyone to figure out what level of help makes sense, since they cover three levels of care, from basic to advanced. Meals are provided, and that saves residents the cost and time of cooking, plus there's housekeeping, help with showering, other personal care services, medication administration, and help with activities like getting dressed.

People who live at Highland House get help with daily activities if needed, letting them stay somewhat independent but still have help on hand, and those who need memory care have those services available, too, along with diabetes care like monitoring insulin when needed. The community space is set up to support social life, with an indoor area for people to visit and spend time together, and there are activities and classes held on-site to get everyone moving around and meeting, which people seem to enjoy for the company and routine. Since Highland House is operated by physicians as an extended care facility, it comes with special health programs, like eye care services, women's health, heart and vascular care, orthopedic care, primary care, and even emergency room services when needed. Residents can access patient portals and medical records, and the team there uses health risk assessments to keep an eye on people's overall well-being, offering patient resources as well, and even visitor information. Highland House is licensed as a CBRF in Watertown and an RCAC in Waterloo, which affects what level of care and service is offered at each site, but overall, people get meals, personal care, help from nurses and staff, and have a steady option for both independence and assistance.

Nurses and other team members are recognized for their work, and residents can speak with them about care or day-to-day needs, and classes and events bring people together, making it a place where things happen on a regular rhythm. Highland House aims to be a steady and straightforward place where older adults can get different levels of support, feel safe with staff always around, and have enough options to suit both those who want to do more on their own and people who need ongoing care.
