    Well-kept facility, pricey, management concerns

I toured and spent time at Brookside and overall I'd recommend it - it's the nicest, quiet, well-kept facility in the area with excellent, nutritious meals, tons of well-attended activities, a beauty shop, library, game room and happy, uplifted residents. The staff I met were friendly, caring and efficient, the apartments are clean and accessible, and there's a safe, independent atmosphere with good transportation and amenities. My main concerns: rent is high and units are unfurnished, I was told some staff report terrible management, unpredictable scheduling and poor working conditions, and I even saw cockroaches once. If you can afford it and value activities/food/setting, it's worth serious consideration.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is predominantly positive about resident-facing services, amenities, and the social environment, with some notable and repeated concerns about cost, occasional management issues, and inconsistent facility condition. Many reviewers emphasize accessibility features — wheelchair-accessible bedrooms, a flat layout, and lower sinks and cabinets — which makes the property attractive to residents with mobility needs. Multiple accounts highlight comfortable apartments (with several reviewers praising large one-bedroom and spacious studio layouts and patios with creek views), though other reviewers mention small rooms and older living areas, indicating variability by unit.

Dining and daily life are frequent strengths in the reviews. Several residents describe daily full-course meals, three meals a day, light breakfasts, and even wine options; reviewers often call meals "excellent," "wonderful," or "nutritious." At the same time, a minority report cheap or repetitive offerings (Jello desserts mentioned), suggesting inconsistent dining experience between different times or diners. Housekeeping and basic services are praised — reviews note daily linen and trash service and general cleanliness and upkeep, plus a neat front yard and well-kept public spaces. The presence of an on-site beauty parlor, library, game room, private dining room, exercise room, and transportation to medical appointments and shopping supports a comfortable, convenient lifestyle for residents.

Activities and social atmosphere are another clear positive theme. Multiple reviewers report a long list of activities, strong turnout for events, engaging entertainment (including grand piano music), regular cocktail hours, and an active activities director. Residents describe feeling happy, uplifted, and independent within a secure, quiet environment. The facility is frequently characterized as one of the nicer or nicest options in the market, with community engagement and a welcoming atmosphere during tours (coffee and a donut offered) cited as positive touches.

Staff and management perceptions are mostly favorable but not uniform. Many reviews praise helpful, cheerful, caring, and efficient staff, and several note stable, long-term employees and supportive directors who create a pleasant experience for residents. However, at least one review from an employee perspective describes serious management problems: unpredictable scheduling, forced shifts on days off, unprofessional behavior, and cockroach reports. This sharply negative account contrasts with the many resident reports of excellent staff and suggests there may be internal staffing or management issues not visible to residents, or isolated problem areas affecting employee morale and workplace conditions.

Cost and value emerge as a mixed but prominent concern. Several residents say the price is high or "initially high but worth it," while others call rent "outrageous," criticize lack of discounts, and point to unfurnished units as additional expense. These conflicting comments indicate variability in perceptions of value — some residents feel the quality of care, meals, activities, and staff justify the cost, while others feel the price is not aligned with what they received. Related issues include admission criteria — one prospective resident reported being denied admission due to income — and the location being described as isolated by some, which could impact perceived value depending on a family's needs.

Other noteworthy details: smoking is permitted on one porch, which may be a consideration for non-smoking residents or families. Cleanliness is praised in many reviews, yet there is at least one report of pests that should not be ignored. Some reviewers find the facility large (sixty rooms or more) and note that although the lobby and grounds can look attractive, apartment furnishing and meal quality may vary.

In summary, Brookside Retirement Residence is consistently praised for accessibility, a rich activities program, attractive common areas, helpful front-line staff, and a robust meal and service offering that many residents find excellent and uplifting. Key concerns to weigh are the reported variability in apartment sizes and condition, mixed assessments of food quality by a minority, potentially high costs or limited pricing flexibility, and at least one serious employee complaint suggesting possible internal management or staffing problems. Prospective residents and families should tour multiple unit types, ask detailed questions about current menu planning and staffing stability, request recent inspection or pest-control records, and clarify all costs and what is furnished to determine whether Brookside meets their specific needs and budget.

The facility mainly focuses on independent living for seniors who can take care of themselves but also provides assisted living and memory care services for those who need extra help, with trained staff always available around the clock to help with things like dressing, bathing, daily chores, or just getting around. The campus has unfurnished studio apartments, so residents can set things up how they like, with their own bath and kitchenette, refrigerator, and microwave, and all utilities are included except phones and cable, keeping things pretty simple. Every day, meals are prepared by an on-site chef and team, with three tasty and healthy options, and the dining room can host private parties if families come to celebrate something special; there's also a beauty shop, game room, and library right on site. Staff plan different activities like birthday parties, Hawaiian luaus, themed holiday events, and live music, so there's always something to do, and for exercise and fresh air, residents can use both indoor and outdoor common areas or sign up for trips off-campus. There are pet visits from time to time, transportation services, and housekeeping and laundry are taken care of every day, so people can spend more time doing what they want and less time worrying about daily chores. Residents living with memory trouble, like Alzheimer's or dementia, have their own Memory Care area, which is set up to reduce confusion and keep everyone safe.
