    Spacious apartments with excellent amenities

I live here and am very pleased - spacious, well-designed 1-bedrooms (many with 1.5 baths and some washer/dryer hookups), wonderful window views, and a beautifully maintained courtyard. The manager and staff are friendly and accommodating, the building is clean and quiet, and on-site amenities (indoor walking track, gym, library, community room, transportation to shopping) keep things active and convenient. Great West Hartford Center location - walkable to restaurants and the library - good parking and overall excellent value; I highly recommend it.

    Summary of reviews

The Court of Saint James presents as a value-oriented independent living community with a strong emphasis on social programming and on-site amenities. Apartment units are frequently described as spacious one-bedroom layouts with 1.5 baths and accessible bathroom features such as walk-in showers; some units include washer-dryer hookups and additional half baths. The property’s courtyard, walking track, gym, billiards room and library support an active lifestyle, and the community’s proximity to West Hartford Center offers walkability to restaurants and the public library.

Staff and community atmosphere are consistently cited as strengths. Reviewers describe staff as friendly, accommodating and engaged, and the resident community as social and caring, with festive holiday events and regular activities such as coffee socials, movies, Wii bowling and Supper Club. Transportation services to shopping and medical appointments, an on-site lounge and a guest apartment are additional conveniences that support independent living. Parking and snow removal are also noted positively.

Dining and in-unit kitchen arrangements appear mixed. Several reviewers highlight affordable catered dinners and an updated dining room or communal kitchen, while others note there is no full-service on-site dining or that many apartments have only small kitchenettes. Reported operational patterns include extra charges for housekeeping and certain services, occasional inconsistencies in meal portions or availability, and a need for clearer communication about exactly what meal services are offered to residents.

Facility condition and management practices show variability. The building is described as generally clean and well maintained, and parts of the community have been renovated; however, some areas remain dated with narrow hallways or older finishes. A notable operational concern is the waitlist and prospect communication process: there are reports of a long waiting list paired with limited updates from management. Other recurring issues include odor concerns in limited common areas and expectations that residents will furnish and supply their apartments, which may not be fully clear at move-in.

Overall, the community offers a combination of attractive amenities, a convenient location, and a friendly social environment that many prospective residents find appealing for independent living. Prospective residents and family members should verify current dining arrangements, clarify which services incur additional fees, confirm unit-specific features (kitchen type, washer-dryer hookups), and ask about waitlist timelines and communication practices when considering residency.

About The Court of Saint James

The Court of Saint James is a senior living community for adults aged 55 and older, found less than a mile from West Hartford Center and close to Blue Back Square, which means it's easy to get to shops and restaurants if you still like to go out. The building is two stories high and has sixty-six apartments with one or two bedrooms, and most have a guest bathroom and hookups for a washer and dryer, which sure comes in handy when you don't wanna wait to use the on-site laundry room. Each apartment comes with its own heating and air conditioning that you can control yourself, so if you want your place cooler or warmer, you can just set it how you like. Kitchens include frost-free refrigerators, dishwashers, self-cleaning ovens, and food disposals, so regular cooking and clean-up is about as easy as it gets. Every unit has extra storage space, which is something you appreciate when you move out of a family home and want to keep a few things you're not ready to let go of.

The community's safety features include smoke detectors, a sprinkler system, 24/7 emergency response, and a camera security system, so you can feel secure while living there, and there's staff around to help if anything breaks, inside or outside, and they take care of jobs like snow removal and landscaping, so you don't have to worry about those chores. Maintenance-free living is what people are usually looking for at this age, and you get that here, but they do have rules-no smoking inside the facility and no pets are allowed, so if you have a dog or cat you'll have to make other plans. Transportation services help folks get to shopping trips, doctor visits, and other planned outings, which is a big relief if you don't like to drive anymore or you just want a break from the hassle.

There's a club room, an exercise room, a billiard room, a card room, a library, and even an indoor walking track, so you really can stay active or keep your mind busy just by joining in. Social hours, bingo, movie nights, educational talks, and similar programs are organized, and the common spaces make it easy to visit or meet new people. If you have friends or family coming from out of town, there are overnight suites they can use, which means they don't have to stay in a hotel. Bathrooms and amenities have been set up with seniors in mind, so things are easy to reach and use. The staff are friendly and there to help with both regular needs and things that come up suddenly. Properties are available for rent or purchase, depending on your situation. With all of these features and a location that's close to so much, The Court of Saint James gives older adults a chance to stay independent and social, while having extra support handy whenever it's needed. Tours can be scheduled any day of the week for those who are interested.
