    Short staffed facility, missed medications

I live here and, while daytime staff are often helpful and physical therapy is average, I have serious concerns: the facility is short-staffed (nights worse), medications are frequently late or missed, meals are cold or poor, and showers are inconsistent. Cleanliness and safety are problematic - strong urine smell and puddles at the entrance, rooms not cleaned regularly, no gloves/PPE at times - and communication/accountability are lacking (calls unanswered, clothes lost, staff dismiss concerns, I was even left unattended during a fire drill). Management needs to address staffing, medication reliability, cleanliness and responsiveness.

    Summary of reviews

The reviews portray a facility with active rehabilitation services but persistent operational challenges that affect day-to-day resident experience. On the care side, physical and rehabilitation therapy is available and described as serviceable; however, clinical administration shows gaps. Medication timing and delivery are frequently called into question, and families reported instances when physicians or medication follow-up did not occur as expected. Personal-care routines, including bathing and shower schedules, are described as inconsistent, and reviewers report a discernible difference between daytime and nighttime care quality.

Staffing and staff conduct are central themes. Reviewers describe chronic understaffing that manifests as slow responsiveness to call bells, long unattended intervals, and an overall perception of limited oversight. Day shifts are often characterized as more reliable than night shifts, where reviewers noted self-directed operations and reduced accountability. Several reviewers raised concerns about the tone and responsiveness of front-desk personnel and activity coordination, with specific mention of an ineffective social programming coordinator.

Dining and activities present additional operational weaknesses. Food quality and meal-service reliability are frequently criticized โ€” meals arriving cold or late and general dissatisfaction with menu offerings were noted. Activity programming is described as uneven, with staff turnover or coordination problems diminishing engagement opportunities for residents.

Facility condition and safety issues were raised with respect to cleanliness and sanitation of common areas and resident spaces, including odor concerns and evidence of inadequate surface maintenance. Reviewers also noted isolated safety-process failures during emergency drills and described limited availability of basic infection-control supplies. Furniture and room setup were sometimes reported as lacking seating options beyond beds, which affects resident comfort and room usability.

Management and administrative practices appear inconsistent. Reviewers reported poor communication with families, delays in addressing concerns, lost personal items or clothing, and an overall sense of limited accountability for operational failures. Taken together, the pattern in these reviews points to a facility that provides rehabilitative services but would benefit from strengthened staffing levels, clearer clinical and medication-administration protocols, improved environmental-cleaning practices, and more consistent management oversight to address responsiveness, resident safety, and basic comfort needs.

About Abbey Woods Center for Rehabilitation and Healing

Abbey Woods Center for Rehabilitation and Healing is a for-profit nursing home run by a corporation, and it sits at 31 certified beds as of January 2024, where folks can get both skilled nursing care and short-term rehab. The facility's had a C grade on both health and facility inspections and a B-plus nurse quality grade, doing better when it comes to preventing major falls and pressure ulcers, though there've been some government fines and deficiencies in recent years. Residents get help with daily things like bathing, dressing, eating, transfers, and medication management, and there's a 24-hour call system and supervision for those who need a watchful eye. Abbey Woods accepts Medicare and Medicaid, which can help a lot with the costs for those who qualify.

Rooms come furnished with private bathrooms, Wi-Fi, cable TV, telephones, kitchenettes, and air conditioning, so you can expect comfort and some privacy. Residents can join in on a social environment with things like resident-run activities, family and resident councils, community-sponsored events, and organized programs for recreation, games, and fitness. The community offers lots of choices for eating, from restaurant-style dining to professional chef services and meals to fit allergies or food restrictions, along with all-day dining and an accessible dining room. Housekeeping, laundry, dry cleaning, and transportation services are available to help manage chores and errands while staying there.

If you're looking for amenities, there's a library, arts room, game room, movie theater, places for fitness, and walking paths outdoors, with planned daily activities to fill the day if someone wants to get involved. For health needs beyond the basics, the staff can provide speech, occupational, and physical therapy, cardiac and pain management, stroke and wound care, tracheotomy and IV therapy, diabetes help, dentistry, podiatry, pharmacy, X-ray, and nutritional counseling, along with different therapies and inpatient rehab meant to help folks regain strength and work back up to being more independent. The place is mainly for people who need medical support as they recover or who have conditions that make daily living hard. Abbey Woods also provides some non-ambulatory care, emergency alert systems, and help moving in for new residents. There's no available information about any special services, unique programs, or continuing care retirement community options at Abbey Woods, but people can visit their website for more details.
