    Clean, Friendly, Professional, Home-like Care

I toured the place and was impressed. The staff were courteous, professional and attentive - they kept him clean and comfortable and greeted us warmly. The facility is well-kept and odor-free, rooms are clean and cozy, and amenities (weekly happy hour, bingo, music, games, on-site PT and salon) plus resident-focused dining and personalized care plans make it feel home-like.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews of Manor Care of Gig Harbor present a mixed picture with distinct areas of strength alongside recurring operational concerns. Many observers praised the front-line caregiving team as friendly, professional, and attentive; several accounts describe staff who provide person-centered interactions, keep rooms and public areas well maintained, and support residents with daily needs. The facility offers a robust activity calendar โ€” weekly happy hours, music, bingo, and seasonal parties โ€” and on-site amenities that include physical therapy/rehab services and a hair salon. Reviewers also highlighted the advantage of having both rehab and long-term care options in the same building and noted that dining is often geared to resident preferences and dietary needs.

At the same time, a pattern of inconsistent care quality is evident across multiple comments. Families and visitors described episodes of delayed or omitted personal-care tasks (for example, irregular bathing schedules and sheet changes), missed feeding assistance, and treatment gaps that contributed to concerns about overall responsiveness. Staffing shortages and perceived overcrowding were cited as contributing factors to these inconsistencies. Several reviews expressed particular concern about dementia care, noting limited staff availability to accompany or supervise cognitively impaired residents and gaps in protocols for patients who need escorting to appointments.

Operational issues extend beyond direct care. Multiple reviewers reported sanitation and housekeeping lapses in portions of the facility, alongside examples of late or undercooked meals and inconsistent meal-service continuity. A subset of comments identified weaknesses in transfer and mobility-safety practices and described events that suggest opportunities to strengthen training and fall-prevention protocols. Medication-administration and documentation practices were also questioned in a few accounts, and there were mentions of bruises, infections, and other clinical concerns that underline the need for tighter clinical oversight.

Management and communication emerged as a notable area of variability. While some families described a collaborative administrative team and responsive staff, others cited poor communication, unprofessional administrative interactions, delayed administrative follow-through (including financial or settlement actions), and case-specific problems such as loss of personal belongings and transportation mishaps. There are also allegations related to end-of-life care and diagnostic accuracy in isolated but serious accounts, which highlight the importance of transparent incident reporting and family communication following critical events.

For prospective residents and families: a visit focused on direct observation is advised. Ask about current staffing ratios (day/night), dementia-care protocols and supervision plans, transfer-training and fall-prevention procedures, medication-administration safeguards, housekeeping schedules, and the facilityโ€™s process for securing and documenting personal belongings. Observe meal service and dining routines, review the activity calendar, and request examples of clinical communication and incident-response procedures. The facility offers clear strengths in amenities, rehabilitation services, and social programming, but families should obtain specific, up-to-date information about staffing and operational safeguards before making a placement decision.

It offers skilled nursing services, assisted living, independent living, and memory care, and it's part of the ManorCare Health Services network. The three-story building has an elevator, so residents can move between the levels, and the hallways are spacious with large, comfortable rooms, including private bathrooms, cable TV, telephones, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, furnished rooms, and kitchenettes. Some units are studios, some are one-bedroom, and some are two-bedroom, with a few offering amenities like microwaves, and all have balconies, with the one-bedroom units having large balconies. The whole place has a focus on both short-term and long-term care, handling serious medical needs, post-surgery recovery, and conditions like broken hips or leg and ankle injuries. Residents receive care from staff who provide 12 to 16 hours of nursing care a day, there's a 24-hour call system, and supervision throughout the day and night. There's also medication management and help with bathing, dressing, and transferring for those who need it, with extra care for those who have dementia or memory loss. The facility is known for its "People First" care philosophy and maintains competence and concern among staff.

Residents have access to many activities-each day brings things like bingo, a lecture series, music performances, arts classes, and craft projects-along with morning live exercise classes that are either led by staff or played on video. There's a large library that doubles as a game room for reading or playing, an in-house movie theater, community garden, outdoor program spaces, walking paths, and outdoor common spaces, plus a fitness and wellness room, a spa, sauna, and beauty salon that offers pedicures, manicures, and massage therapy. The bus can take residents to appointments, and it can fit wheelchairs, which helps those who need extra mobility support get to local shops, healthcare places, or other outings. Housekeeping, laundry, and family support services are available.

Meals are served in the community dining room with at least four choices for lunch and three for dinner, including special menu options for allergies or diabetes as prepared by a professional chef. Residents can also bring small pets like cats and dogs, which helps the place feel more like home. Cleanliness, quiet, and odor control are a focus, and the place keeps up with carpet and room maintenance.

Residents and family councils meet to address questions or concerns and look for ways to improve life there. Pastoral support and general counseling-including psychiatric and psychoanalyst services-are on hand. The facility runs in a residential setting, in Pierce County, in ZIP codes 98335 and 98407, with nearby services including Franciscan Ear, Nose & Throat Associates, local pharmacies, parks, walking trails, Panera Bread, and Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church. The location has a Walk Score of 23, meaning it's car-dependent, but some biking is possible with a Bike Score of 37. There's parking on site, and rooms are available for rent or sale, with options for people who want two bedrooms and two bathrooms or one bedroom and one bathroom.
