    Compassionate professional staff, good food

I placed my grandmother here and have been very pleased with the compassionate, professional staff - hardworking CNAs and experienced LPNs/RNs who are attentive and CPR-certified. Administration, including the Director of Admissions and event coordinator, were professional and helpful; the facility is clean, pleasant, and the food is good. Overall a solid choice I would recommend to families.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews of Eastview Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center present a mixed picture. Many families and residents praise the caregiving team and aspects of daily life; however, other accounts describe operational and oversight weaknesses that lead to widely divergent experiences. Prospective residents should weigh the facilityโ€™s clinical strengths against variability in operational practices.

Care quality and staffing: Several reviews emphasize compassionate, capable caregiving: experienced LPNs and RNs, CPR-certified staff, and hardworking CNAs who assist with daily needs and rehabilitation. The facility operates as a medical rehabilitation center for residents working toward return home, and some families noted good clinical outcomes and professional bedside care. At the same time, reviewers describe variability in staff engagement and responsiveness. Concerns include inconsistent assistance with activities of daily living, reports of delayed responses to incidents, and gaps in fall-prevention practices. There are also mentions of inconsistent medication handling and documentation, which raises questions about clinical-incident response protocols.

Dining and activities: Dining impressions are generally positive; several reviewers commented on good food and attentive servers. The social program and event coordination receive favorable comments as contributors to a pleasant atmosphere and meaningful resident relationships. Families who emphasized activities and staff interactions described strong resident comfort and social connection.

Facilities and safety: Physical impressions are mixed. Some reviewers described clean, well-maintained common areas and comfortable accommodations; others noted odor-management issues and sanitation concerns in parts of the facility. There are explicit pest-control concerns and comments about aging infrastructure. Technology and visitor processes have room for improvement โ€” for example, difficulties with the visitor check-in application were mentioned. A number of reviewers requested better oversight measures (including calls for surveillance) to address property-control and safety gaps.

Management and communication: Administrative interactions received both praise and criticism. Several families complimented the Director of Admissions and other administrative staff for professionalism and supportive coordination. Conversely, other accounts describe poor follow-up on complaints, limited transparency, and slow communication after incidents. There are also allegations involving personal-property loss; these raise the need for clearer property-management procedures and stronger complaint-resolution practices.

Notable patterns and recommendations: The dominant pattern is one of inconsistency โ€” strong clinical and interpersonal strengths exist alongside operational weaknesses that can materially affect a residentโ€™s experience. When evaluating Eastview, families should ask specific questions about staffing levels and turnover, fall-prevention protocols, medication-administration and incident-response procedures, personal-property controls, pest-control schedules, sanitation routines, and how the facility communicates with families after events. Visiting during different shifts, speaking with nursing leadership, and reviewing written policies on belongings, monitoring devices, and incident reporting will help clarify whether the facilityโ€™s strengths align with a prospective residentโ€™s needs.

About Eastview Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center

Eastview Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center sits over on 4th Avenue South in Birmingham and has been caring for older folks since way back in 1988, and folks call it Ball Healthcare Services too, since that's the company that owns it with Clarence Ball holding the reins since the start, and Antione Ash running things as the administrator. The place has 92 certified beds but usually has about 59 people staying there, and it's been managed by Ball Healthcare Service, Inc. for decades, though it's not BBB accredited. The center offers a lot of services, like skilled nursing, rehabilitation, memory care, physical and speech therapies, respiratory help, as well as wound care and hospice, and they've got special units for cognitive care and sub-acute medical needs. There are licensed nurses and therapists on staff, and the care team works together to build plans for each person, covering things like ventilator care, tracheostomy care, and complex wound treatments.

Eastview has been inspected and got 8 deficiencies on its most recent report, with documented issues in sanitation like poor garbage disposal, and there have been citations for not reporting suspected abuse, neglect, or theft fast enough. Infection control has also come up, so that's something to remember, but their nurse turnover rate is a bit below Alabama's average at 44.6%, though the average hours nurses spend per resident each day comes in below the state number at 3.26 hours. The facility isn't taking new patients right now, but the folks who live there get round-the-clock skilled care, pharmacy services, special meals, an onsite salon, and can enjoy outdoor courtyards or decorated common rooms if they feel up to it. Eastview provides both short-term rehab and long-term nursing care, has teams for discharge planning, and tries to make things comfortable and welcoming, but it is important to look at inspection histories and staff levels when making choices about care, just like you would for any nursing home.
