    Maintenance-free peaceful active 55+ living

I've lived here 7½ years and wouldn't live anywhere else. Maintenance-free, lock-and-go independent living with large, bright apartments and full kitchens, beautiful trees and green space, and easy access to biking, golf, tennis and swimming. Friendly, supportive neighbors and cooperative management (kudos to Jan and Josh) keep repairs and daily worries off my plate - peaceful, active, and superb for 55+ living.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: The reviews paint Plaza At Highlands Crossing as a highly regarded independent living/co-op community that delivers carefree, maintenance-free living in a beautiful, park-like setting. Across multiple reviewers there is strong, consistent praise for the physical environment — mature trees, green spaces, attractive buildings and apartments — and for the lifestyle the property supports. Long tenures and repeated statements such as "wouldn't live anywhere else," "best of the best," and multiple long-term residents (five to seven-plus years) indicate sustained resident satisfaction and a stable community culture.

Facilities and residences: Reviewers highlight well-appointed apartments (notably large units and full kitchens), bright modern conveniences, and a variety of floorplans. The campus features a library and green space around building wings. The setting is repeatedly described as quiet, beautiful, and suitable for active residents who enjoy biking, golf, tennis, and swimming nearby. The property is characterized as a "lock-and-go" environment with minimal intrusion concerns and building maintenance (including appliance and A/C repairs) handled by the community, which reviewers value highly for the convenience and peace of mind it brings.

Community, staff, and management: The social environment is frequently praised — neighbors are described as friendly and supportive, the community as congenial and cooperative, and management as effective in providing worry-free living. Several reviewers explicitly note cooperative ownership benefits and a cooperative management style. Staff are described as warm and friendly; however, multiple mentions that many staff roles are filled by volunteers suggests a staffing model that relies on resident or volunteer participation alongside paid staff. This reliance on volunteers is mentioned in the reviews and may be perceived variably by prospective residents (positive for community engagement, potentially concerning for those wanting a high level of paid professional services).

Activities and lifestyle: The community is repeatedly recommended for active, independent older adults and empty nesters. Reviewers mention many activities and a vivacious social life, supportive neighbors, and easy access to nearby amenities. The overall tone suggests a lively, engaged resident population that enjoys on- and off-site recreational opportunities. Many reviewers emphasize the peace of mind from not having to manage home upkeep and the convenience of close-by facilities.

Dining and service limitations: The most consistent negative point across these summaries concerns dining — reviewers note limited meal service, with one summary explicitly stating meals are lacking and only a Sunday meal is provided. That limitation stands out as the primary shortcoming mentioned and could be an important consideration for prospective residents who expect regular on-site dining. Combined with the volunteer-heavy staffing note, the dining and some service dimensions may be less robust than the community's physical and social strengths.

Suitability and patterns: The reviews consistently present Plaza At Highlands Crossing as an outstanding option for independent, active seniors who want maintenance-free living in a beautiful, secure, and social environment. It is repeatedly clarified as independent living rather than assisted living; consequently, it may not be appropriate for those expecting or needing ongoing medical or higher-level personal care. The prevalence of long-term satisfied residents, the cooperative ownership model, and the emphasis on convenience, safety, and outdoor amenities are the dominant patterns. In short, reviewers recommend the community strongly for active, independent retirees seeking a comfortable, low-stress lifestyle, while noting limited dining services and a volunteer-reliant staffing model as the main caveats.

    About Plaza at Highlands Crossing

Plaza At Highlands Crossing sits at 1 Highlands Crossing Drive among the scenic Ozark Mountain range where folks can enjoy a comfortable retirement in well-designed one- and two-bedroom suites, with some units offering up to 1,775 square feet and ground floor access for those who prefer to step out into the fresh air. The apartments come with air conditioning, full kitchens, cable TV readiness, and baths with tubs, which means residents have the comforts of home but fewer worries, since all utilities are included in the monthly maintenance fee and the on-site office and maintenance managers handle everyday needs. This place keeps things lively with regular activities like card games, bingo, mah-jongg, horseshoes, happy hours, pot luck dinners, movie nights, coffee and donut meetups, and barbecues or picnics, so seniors always have something to look forward to and social hours help new friends get together. Folks who like their pets are welcome to bring cats and dogs as long as they meet the weight limits, and both indoor and outdoor common areas mean there's space for small gatherings by a central fireplace, community rooms, or outside on patios and lawns surrounded by nature.

Independent living here suits healthy retirees over age 55, though there are also assisted living, memory care, nursing home, and home care services available for those who need a little more help as time goes on. The building is handicap accessible, making it easy for everyone to move about, and there's transportation and parking for outings beyond the grounds. The community works under a cooperative governance model with a Board of Directors elected from among the 59 resident shareholders, which makes it a bit different from other places because residents really have a say in how decisions get made. With a library, several recreational spaces, and staff focused on keeping everyone comfortable and safe, Plaza At Highlands Crossing offers seniors a place where living independently comes with support, choice, and plenty of chances to enjoy each day, and though it doesn't publish prices, families can check current options if they're interested in the different floor plans or available two-bedroom, two-bath units for sale.
