    Caring staff and engaging activities

I had a short-term stay and was grateful for the genuinely caring, professional staff - Jada felt like an angel. The facility is clean, nicely decorated, and family-friendly, with a comforting therapy dog, engaging activities (bingo, weekly entertainment, root-beer float day) and comfortable common areas. Staff were honest, attentive, and went above and beyond to make my loved one thrive; I left with a very positive impression.

    Summary of reviews

Reviews portray a facility with a mix of clearly positive elements and several significant operational concerns. Many commenters describe compassionate, attentive caregiving and therapy staff who engage residents and families; reviewers praised clean, well-decorated rooms and common areas, frequent staff check-ins, an active activities program (bingo, weekly entertainment, themed days), and pet-therapy visits. These strengths suggest a capacity to provide a homelike environment with social engagement and supportive rehabilitation services for many residents.

At the same time, there are recurring clinical and operational concerns that merit attention. Several reviewers described delays or failures in medication administration and problems with timely delivery of prescribed treatments; these accounts indicate gaps in medication-management processes and responsiveness to urgent clinical needs. There are also notes about inconsistent physician/clinical oversight on the rehab side, which may compound safety risks when clinical judgment or follow-up is required.

Communication and staffing patterns are another mixed area. Some families report honest, transparent interactions with management and staff who go above and beyond, while others encountered long phone hold times, unhelpful or curt phone interactions, and variable professionalism on the floor. Collectively these comments point to inconsistent communication protocols and staff conduct standards. Reviewers also highlighted staffing and morale issues—comments about staff being treated poorly and variability in staffing levels—which can affect continuity of care.

Facility and infection-control observations are similarly mixed. The physical environment is often described as tidy, pleasantly scented, and attractively decorated, but a number of reviewers noted odor concerns in certain areas and inconsistent adherence to infection-prevention practices (including mask use during a COVID event). Environmental comfort issues, such as heat in some areas, were also mentioned.

Dining, activities, and therapy are frequently cited as strengths: meals were generally satisfactory with varied menus, activities were engaging, and rehabilitation/physical therapy received positive remarks from families. However, a few comments asked for greater menu variety or more consistent meal experiences.

Overall, prospective residents and families should weigh the facility’s clear strengths in resident engagement, therapy, and environment against the reported variability in clinical administration, communication, infection-control practices, and staffing consistency. If considering placement, it would be prudent to ask facility leadership for current policies and metrics on medication administration accuracy, staffing ratios and turnover, infection-prevention protocols, physician coverage for the rehab unit, and family communication procedures; arranging an in-person tour and direct conversations with nursing leadership may help clarify how the facility has addressed the operational concerns described in reviews.

About Lakewood Nursing & Rehab Center

Lakewood Nursing & Rehab Center sits in a neighborhood with natural views close to two lakes, and the building lets in a lot of light during the day, which makes the common areas feel open and bright, and there's a nice outdoor courtyard where people can sit and visit. The center's a non-profit and has both short-term and long-term stays, and people come here for skilled care, rehabilitation, or just to have a quiet and comfortable place to live with support. Residents have furnished private rooms, but they can still bring some smaller things to make it feel like home, and staff handle all the laundry and housekeeping tasks, so people don't have to worry about those chores. There's an on-site salon, so folks can get their hair done, and there's a big rehabilitation gym with therapy programs that help people rebuild strength or balance, and those who need it can get speech therapy too. Nurses and licensed clinicians are on hand around the clock, and they help with daily tasks, IV therapy, wound care, and provide support for people recovering from an illness, surgery, or injury, and the center can care for people in need of medical, cardiac ICU, burn care, hospice, or psychiatric help, including both children and adults in their different ICUs, though there's no trauma center. The meals are served in a fine dining style with attention paid to taste and dietary needs, so people can enjoy their food, and the daily activity schedule includes things like bingo, crafts, and socials, plus sometimes small group outings. Families and residents can get to know staff, as the center tries to build close relationships and works to provide a welcoming, inclusive space that follows all civil rights rules. People spend time together in light-filled halls and in the courtyard, and the mix of therapy, social activities, health care, and on-site amenities like the salon and rehab gym aims to make daily life comfortable and keep folks as independent as possible.
