    Compassionate staff, but care failures

I had a mixed experience. Some nurses, therapists and aides were compassionate, responsive and treated my loved one like family, but persistent problems - unprofessional/unfriendly staff, poor communication, care mismanagement (including unnecessary ER trips and hospice mix-ups), and unhygienic/neglectful practices - caused serious harm. New management helped in some ways, but I would be very cautious.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is highly polarized: a number of families praise Westwood Post Acute Care for compassionate staff, strong rehab services, and improvements under some administrators, while an equal or larger group of reviews report serious problems with communication, neglect, sanitation, and clinical oversight. The result is a facility where experiences appear to vary dramatically depending on unit, shift, or which staff are on duty.

Care quality and clinical issues: Many reviews describe attentive, skilled nursing and therapy staff who produced good rehab outcomes and meaningful clinical support for some residents. Those positive reports specifically praise the physical therapy team, state that care kept patients alive or helped them thrive after leaving, and credit a committed Director of Nursing and some administrators for timely resolution of concerns. Conversely, a substantial number of reviews report delayed medical attention (delayed doctor calls), lack of therapy or inconsistent therapy delivery, infections that required emergency room visits, bed sores, and neglect (residents left in feces for hours). Several narratives describe a patient’s condition deteriorating while in the facility and improving after family intervention or after being removed. These clinical concerns are among the most serious recurring themes.

Staff behavior and communication: Reviews show a wide split about staff demeanor and communication. Positive comments describe staff as compassionate, responsive, and treating residents with dignity; some families say staff acted as an extension of the family and provided 24/7 responsiveness. However, negative comments are frequent and strong: many reviewers report unprofessional and rude behavior (including shouting receptionists and rough nursing), staff distracted by personal phones, staff who do not speak English leading to communication challenges, and long/unanswered phone hold times. A pervasive theme is inconsistent communication — families often report being left uninformed about changes in condition, discharges, or even a resident’s death. A small number of reviews describe that staff only improved care after family asserted themselves.

Environment, infection control, and safety: Several reviewers praise the facility’s cleanliness and pleasant interior, noting that some units smell fresh and are well maintained. But other reviews describe alarming sanitation and safety lapses: no gloves used with patients, inadequate disinfection during COVID-19, misplaced medical equipment, housekeeping reportedly non-existent in some cases, and rooms in disrepair (beds unmade, drawers broken). These conflicting reports create a pattern of uneven standards: some areas or shifts appear clean and well-run, while others are described as unsafe and unhygienic.

Dining, activities, and ancillary services: Dining receives mixed feedback. Multiple reviewers praise healthy, tasty meals and say residents enjoy the food; others report very poor food, risk of hunger, and instances where patients were given inappropriate textures or meals not suitable for those who cannot chew. Activity and therapy offerings are positively mentioned by families who see frequent therapy and additional activities, while others complain about lack of therapy or inadequate rehab. COVID-era procedures (testing and vaccinations) are acknowledged positively in some reviews.

Management, transparency, and notable serious incidents: A number of reviews commend management — especially newer leadership — for improvements, responsiveness, and advocacy on behalf of residents. Still, there are several serious allegations about administration: hiding or being unavailable, covering up problems, and mishandling critical events. The most alarming recurring reports involve the handling of deceased residents: reviewers allege delayed transfer of medical records to the mortuary, lack of family notification for a week, coroner involvement, and disrupted funeral arrangements. These accounts raise significant concerns about record handling, notifications, and post-mortem processes. Several reviews also mention formal complaints or coroner investigations triggered by these events.

Patterns and overall impression: The dominant pattern is inconsistency. Many positive reviews come from families who interacted with specific compassionate staff or who experienced strong rehab outcomes; many negative reviews come from families who encountered poor shifts, communication failures, or serious clinical lapses. Because the variance is high, potential residents and families may receive very different experiences depending on timing, unit, staffing, and management on site. When things run well, reviewers strongly recommend the facility; when things run poorly, reviewers urge others to avoid it and describe potentially dangerous neglect.

In summary, the reviews portray Westwood Post Acute Care as a facility with pockets of real strength — committed nurses, good rehab staff, and periods of effective management — but also with recurring, serious negatives: inconsistent communication, alleged neglect and infection-control failures, unprofessional behavior, and troubling handling of deaths and paperwork. These themes suggest that families considering Westwood should probe current staffing stability, infection control practices, death-notification procedures, and variance between units/shifts when making decisions or arranging visits. The disparity between positive and negative accounts indicates that monitoring care closely and asking specific operational questions on admission and during stays would be important for anyone placing a loved one at this facility.

    About Westwood Post Acute Care

Westwood Post Acute Care sits on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles and is a skilled nursing facility with 93 certified beds that usually has about 75 residents each day, offering round-the-clock nursing care for people who need both short-term help and long-term care, and while the office hours aren't listed anywhere, the services run daily from 7 in the morning until 8 at night. Staff at Westwood Post Acute Care often get described as helpful, joyful, and kind, which makes the place friendly and inviting, and since the facility belongs to a network run by Corporate Interface Services LLC and is affiliated with Country Villa Health Services, residents may also end up somewhere else in the network if their needs change. The team at Westwood gives support with everyday tasks like bathing, getting dressed, and taking medicine, plus they help people who need skilled nursing care, rehabilitation after surgery or injury, memory care for Alzheimer's and dementia, wound care, pressure ulcer care, orthopedic care, and even dialysis, and they can handle special needs with things like medication management, physical, occupational, and speech therapy with in-house therapists who work with residents to get them back on their feet as much as possible. The building itself tries to be homelike and safe for wandering residents, with a focus on keeping folks from getting confused or lost if they have memory issues, and there's a regular schedule of social, physical, mental, and emotional activities for residents, including some that have won awards for excellence, with chefs and meal planners preparing healthy food using good ingredients and a focus on vitamins and minerals. Westwood also offers outpatient services, and residents get opportunities to socialize, move around, play games, or take part in programs designed to lift their spirits and keep them active, and the team there says they try hard to look out for each person's physical, mental, psychosocial, and emotional needs with a blend of medical care and personal attention. While the staff tries to create a welcoming community, there've been some problems, like a higher nurse turnover rate of 41.8% compared to the state's average, a bit less nurse staffing hours per resident per day than the average facility, and 85 total deficiencies reported in inspections, including issues with infection control, resident assessments and care planning, pressure ulcer care, and honoring residents' preferences and rights, though none of these caused actual harm but inspectors said they had the potential to cause more than minimal harm if they weren't fixed. Westwood is not accepting new patients right now, but its mix of specialized care and focus on rehabilitation, daily living help, strong team approach, and many amenities aims to help residents recover, maintain health, and feel at home as much as possible. Most communication happens in English, and the facility tries to support both body and mind with nurses, team coordination, a nice setting, and lots of daily activities, although it's good to look at inspection reports and staffing details when considering care options.
