    Warm Quaker community, attentive staff

I placed my parent here and am very pleased - the community is warm, inclusive and clearly shaped by Quaker values of simplicity, equality, peace and kindness. Staff and residents are friendly and attentive, management and the executive director are responsive and quality-focused, and the place is well run. The garden cottages, park-like grounds with private gardens and fruit trees, walking paths, shuttle service and plentiful activities make for an active, non-institutional lifestyle. I would fully support a loved one moving here and recommend an in-person tour - Korina was very accessible.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression: Reviews portray Friends House as a community with strong relational strengths — residents and families commonly describe caring, attentive staff and a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere consistent with the community’s values. The campus and residences receive frequent praise: park-like grounds, garden cottages, private garden spaces and opportunities for residents to grow vegetables and use green space are recurring highlights. Many reviewers cited well-sized, clean apartments and an active social life supported by organized activities such as music, crafts and outings.

Care quality and staff: Caregiving staff are described as compassionate and accessible, with multiple accounts of staff providing attentive support through transitions, including moves to higher levels of care. Several reviewers praised the medical care and the responsiveness of particular managers and directors. At the same time, there are operational concerns to consider: some reviews indicate inconsistent administrative responsiveness and gaps in communication with families during clinical events. Prospective residents should ask about incident-response protocols and the facility’s family-communication practices.

Skilled nursing and continuity of care: While assisted-living and independent-living services are generally viewed positively, reviewers note variation in the skilled-nursing unit’s environment and quality — some describe the skilled-nursing area as more institutional in appearance and operation. There are also mentions of potential changes to the availability of skilled-nursing services, which raises questions about long-term continuity of care on campus. Families should clarify current skilled-nursing capacity, staffing, and contingency plans for care-level transitions.

Dining and activities: Activity programming is a strength; reviewers describe an active lifestyle and a well-run set of organized events. Dining impressions are mixed: several reviewers praised the food, while others disliked the dining-room experience or found meal service inconsistent. It would be advisable to sample meals and ask for menus and dining policies during a tour.

Facilities, transportation, and finances: The grounds, garden cottages, and green features (including extensive trees and fruit trees) are frequently cited as attractive campus assets. Transportation services, including shuttle service for medical appointments and airport runs, are noted positively. Financially, some terms (such as pro-rated buy-in refunds and modest reservation fees) are described as favorable; however, there are notable criticisms about deposit handling and billing processes. One reviewer required external intervention to secure a refund of a held deposit. Additionally, assisted-living billing that charges in short increments (fifteen-minute blocks) may affect final costs. Prospective residents should review contract language on deposits, refunds, buy-ins, and billing increments carefully.

Management and patterns to weigh: Leadership and individual managers receive positive mentions for accessibility and quality focus, which many families found reassuring. Conversely, the facility shows a pattern of inconsistent administrative responsiveness in some accounts and operational friction around financial transactions and skilled-nursing continuity. Recommendation: arrange an in-person tour, meet care managers and the director, request written policies on refunds and incident communication, sample dining, and confirm current skilled-nursing capabilities before deciding.
