    Compassionate, attentive dementia care home

I placed my mom at Applewood Our House Van Gordon and I'm very pleased. The small, bright, spotless home (and dog Dolly!) with compassionate, attentive staff - especially Destiny, Angelita and house manager Barb - provides personalized dementia/Parkinson's-savvy care, improved her appetite and quality of life, and offers 24/7 medical/hospice support. Plenty of outings and activities with no pressure to join, responsive communication, and genuine family-centered attention make this a blessing for us.

    Summary of reviews

Overall assessment: Reviews for Applewood Our House Assisted Living Memory Care South Lakewood describe a small-house, relationship-driven model that many families find comforting. Strengths emphasized repeatedly include compassionate, individualized caregiving, a small resident census that allows staff to learn personal histories and preferences, and a home-like environment enhanced by a resident dog. Several families described improvements in residents’ quality of life — including better eating, more social interaction, and attentive end-of-life support — and specifically praised named staff and on-site supervisors for responsive, person-centered attention.

Care and staff: Reviewers consistently highlight kind, gentle caregivers who engage residents and build rapport. The small-house format and staff continuity when present are credited with more personalized dementia care and activities that reflect resident interests. At the same time, reviewers also identify frequent staff turnover and variability in staff training as operational weaknesses. These workforce issues are linked in some accounts to inconsistent care experiences; families recommend confirming current staffing patterns and training protocols during a visit.

Dining and activities: The community is described as offering appealing, varied meals and a range of organized activities and outings, with an emphasis on voluntary participation. Families report improved appetite and enjoyment of meals for some residents. Activity programming is cited as a clear positive, with opportunities for socialization, outdoor time, and outings that contribute to quality of life.

Facilities and environment: Many comments describe the houses as bright, roomy, and well-maintained, with open floor plans and ample communal spaces that feel welcoming. Cleanliness and organization are reported as strengths in several locations; however, a contrasted pattern appears across sites. Some reviewers raised sanitation and cleanliness concerns at one location, and noted that physical upkeep and housekeeping practices can vary by house. Prospective families should assess cleanliness and maintenance during an in-person tour.

Management and notable patterns: A notable pattern in the reviews is inconsistency between locations. One site is repeatedly described as well-managed with responsive leadership, while another is associated with management lapses, sanitation concerns, and limited responsiveness from ownership. There are also isolated but serious complaints about transparency and responsiveness that families should investigate further. Given this variability, prospective residents and families would benefit from site-specific questions about staffing stability, staff training (including dementia and Parkinson’s care competencies), medication and clinical oversight, and leadership accessibility. Touring the specific house and speaking with the house manager about recent staffing changes, cleaning protocols, and examples of clinical oversight will help clarify fit.

Bottom line: Applewood Our House presents many strengths characteristic of a small-house memory-care setting — individualized attention, engaging programming, and a homelike environment — and several families express high satisfaction with named caregivers and supervisors. However, reviews also reveal operational variability between houses, with recurring concerns about staff turnover, training consistency, cleanliness at particular sites, and leadership responsiveness. Families should prioritize visiting the exact house being considered, review up-to-date staffing and training information, and ask for examples of how the community handles higher-acuity clinical needs before making a placement decision.

About Applewood Our House - South Lakewood

Applewood Our House Assisted Living Memory Care South Lakewood sits in Lakewood, Colorado, in a single-storey building made for seniors with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. The community opened in September 2012, designed to be easy to move around in, with secure areas to keep residents safe and reduce confusion or wandering. The home offers 16 rooms with options for private or companion living, some with suites that have a bedroom and sitting area, others with closets as dividers between roommates so everyone gets their own space, and all rooms have private bathrooms and showers. There's a cozy living room, dining areas, and an open kitchen with natural cherry cabinets, granite countertops, and stainless appliances, all meant to feel comfortable, like a real home, which is very important for people with memory loss.

Staff are well-trained in caring for folks with dementia and Alzheimer's, and provide round-the-clock care in shifts so someone's always there to help. The community keeps a higher number of staff compared to regular assisted living, which means residents get more attention and help. They help with daily activities like dressing and bathing, offer support with incontinence, diabetes, and non-ambulatory care, and are ready to handle challenging behaviors or emotional needs. Families say staff are warm and kind, creating a friendly, happy place where residents can enjoy themselves.

Meals come from the in-house kitchen and are planned by dietitians and chefs who focus on healthy, appealing food and can handle special diets, even kosher or vegetarian needs. Everyone gets three meals a day plus snacks, served in a social dining room. Residents can bring their own pets, which helps make it feel like home. The home includes laundry, housekeeping, transportation, and beauty services, plus memory-focused activities, daily exercise, crafts, gardening, and games to keep people engaged in mind and body. There are shaded outdoor spaces, walking paths, and raised garden beds for growing vegetables.

Applewood Our House South Lakewood is known for its compassionate care, tailor-made to each resident's needs, both in medical care and social activities. Each resident has a care plan made alongside their family and doctor. The community holds awards for high ratings and reviews, including the Best of Senior Living All Star Award in 2024, and an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. Every effort goes into making people feel safe, comfortable, and valued, with a special team dedicated to memory care and a secure, calm space that tries to create new positive moments for residents each day.
