    Pleased with caring, clean community

I placed my mom at Sunrise on Connecticut Avenue and am very pleased. The building is bright, clean and welcoming with plenty of common space and secure outdoor areas. Staff are attentive, professional and genuinely caring - nursing, aides, therapy, housekeeping and the hairdresser have all been excellent. Meals are wholesome, activities are varied and engaging, and on-site PT helped her regain mobility. Family communication has been strong; my mom feels safe, happy and well cared for, and I would recommend this community.

    Summary of reviews

Sunrise on Connecticut Avenue presents as an upscale, hotel-like senior living community with strong aesthetic and social amenities. The property is frequently described as attractive and well maintained, with high ceilings, bright common areas, multiple sitting rooms, a library, and landscaped outdoor spaces. Apartment options range in size and many units include balconies; there are also on-site conveniences such as a salon and scheduled transportation. Families and residents routinely praise the atmosphere for being comfortable and salon-like, and many note accessible parking and a central urban location.

Care quality and clinical services receive generally positive assessments. Reviewers highlight experienced nursing and therapy staff, including effective physical-therapy/PowerBack programming that supports mobility goals. The community is regarded as competent in memory-care and dementia support, with caregivers trained in Alzheimer’s care and several staff leaders singled out for hands-on leadership and problem solving. At the same time, reviewers identify operational patterns that affect day-to-day responsiveness: staffing ratios appear to fluctuate, aides are sometimes shared among multiple residents, and these staffing patterns can lead to delayed assistance or limited one-to-one time for some residents.

Staff performance is a central and often praised element of the community. Numerous comments emphasize warm, compassionate, professional, and skilled staff who foster personal relationships with residents and run engaging programs. Certain staff members receive strong individual praise for advocacy and leadership. However, there is also a countervailing pattern of inconsistent conduct and communication tone from some employees, and some families report gaps in staff training or coordination that contribute to uneven experiences.

Dining and activities are prominent strengths. The dining program is described as restaurant-style with menus, social dining, and snacks; many residents enjoy the meals and the bistro/happy-hour social events. The activities calendar is broad and active — book clubs, concerts, movies, regular outings, exercise classes, and arts programs are commonly available and credited with positive effects on residents’ mood and engagement. That said, reviewers also describe intermittent problems with meal-service continuity (delays, service that arrives cold on occasion) and some variability in food quality.

Facilities and maintenance show a dual pattern: common areas and grounds are frequently lauded for cleanliness and attractive finishes, while a subset of apartments and bathrooms were noted to need cosmetic repairs or deeper maintenance. Related concerns include sanitation and pest-control issues cited in resident bathrooms; these comments point to the need for stronger pest-control and housekeeping follow-through in specific areas rather than a uniformly poor condition across the community.

Management, pricing, and family communication are notable patterns to consider. The community’s pricing is consistently described as high, with base rent plus additional fees (move-in fees, level-of-care charges, guest fees) that can make affordability a barrier for some families. Several families also cited gaps in transparency and family communication—examples include unclear explanations of memory-care policies, occasional unannounced checks or staged presentations, and inconsistent updates about resident condition or incidents. Conversely, other families described a smooth, efficient move-in and transition experience, indicating variability in administrative interactions.

Overall impression: many families and residents report high satisfaction driven by the facility’s ambiance, robust activity programming, and compassionate clinical staff. At the same time, prospective residents should weigh the premium cost against operational trade-offs: variable staffing levels that may affect responsiveness, occasional meal-service and maintenance issues, sanitation and pest-control concerns raised for specific rooms/bathrooms, and a pricing structure with add-on fees. A recommended approach for prospective families is an in-person tour that includes review of staffing ratios, sample menus and meal-service timing, pest-control and maintenance logs, and clear written explanations of all fees and memory-care policies before committing.

There's outpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing, home care aides, and a dedicated program called Dignity Home Care for in-home needs. Comfortable kitchenettes, handicap accessibility, and maintenance-free living aim to keep things easy. The community has earned a Silver National Quality Award from AHCA/NCAL and is listed as Best Assisted Living by U.S. News & World Report for 2023-2024.

Transportation uses luxury sedans, with rides to appointments, outings, and errands, along with resident parking. Tours are available to see the building, dining, and everyday life for those who want to visit.
